Clathurellidae is a monophyletic family of small to medium-sized sea snails, marine gastropod mollusks in the superfamily Conoidea. [1] [2]
In the taxonomy of the Gastropoda by Bouchet & Rocroi (2005) [3] Clathurellinae was classified as a subfamily of Conidae. [3]
In 2011 Bouchet, Kantor et al. [1] brought some genera from the subfamily Clathurellinae (at that point belonging to the family Conidae) in a new family, Clathurellidae. [1] This was based on anatomical characters and a dataset of molecular sequences of three gene fragments. [1]
Species in this family have small to medium-sized fusiform shells that have strong sculpture. [1] The apex is mammillary.[ citation needed ] The anal sinus is varicose, and touches the sutural ramp. [1] The columella is tuberculated posterior, rugose in front.[ citation needed ] It lacks columellar pleats. [1] The siphonal canal is slightly curved, and varies in length between short[ citation needed ] to moderately long [1] (as in Glyphostoma rostrata ). The operculum is always absent in this family. [1]
The family Clathurellidae appears to differ from the family Mangeliidae principally in its more rounded whorls and cancellate sculpture.
Genera within the family Clathurellidae include:
Conidae, with the current common name of "cone snails", is a taxonomic family of predatory sea snails, marine gastropod molluscs in the superfamily Conoidea.
Pyramidellidae, common name the pyram family, or pyramid shells, is a voluminous taxonomic family of mostly small and minute ectoparasitic sea snails, marine heterobranch gastropod molluscs. The great majority of species of pyrams are micromolluscs.
Turbonillinae is a subfamily of mostly minute parasitic sea snails, marine gastropod molluscs in the family Pyramidellidae, the pyrams and their allies.
Chrysallidinae is a taxonomic group of very small sea snails, marine gastropod mollusk in the family Pyramidellidae, the pyrams and their allies.
The Terebridae, commonly referred to as auger shells or auger snails, is a group or family of small to large predatory marine gastropods in the superfamily Conoidea.
Turrid, plural turrids, is a common name for a very large group of predatory sea snails, marine gastropod mollusks which until recently were all classified in the family Turridae. However, recently the family was discovered to be polyphyletic and therefore was split into a number of families.
Rissoidae is a large family of very small and minute sea snails with an operculum, marine gastropod mollusks in the superfamily Rissooidea and the order Littorinimorpha.
Cerithiidae, common name the cerithiids or ceriths, is a large family of medium-sized marine gastropods in the clade Sorbeoconcha.
Pseudomelatomidae is a family of predatory sea snails, marine gastropods included in the superfamily Conoidea and part of the Neogastropoda.
The Drilliidae are a taxonomic family of small predatory sea snails with high-spired shells. They are classified as marine gastropod mollusks in the superfamily Conoidea.
Clathurellinae was a subfamily of small to quite large sea snails, marine gastropod mollusks in the family Conidae.
Mangeliidae is a monophyletic family of small to medium-sized, predatory sea snails, marine gastropod mollusks in the superfamily Conoidea.
Haedropleura is a genus of sea snails, marine gastropod mollusks in the family Horaiclavidae.
Glyphostoma is a genus of sea snails, marine gastropod mollusks in the family Clathurellidae.
Raphitominae was a subfamily of small to quite large sea snails, marine gastropod mollusks in the superfamily Conoidea.
Borsoniidae is a monophyletic family of small to medium-sized sea snails, marine gastropod mollusks in the superfamily Conoidea.
Horaiclavidae is a family of predatory sea snails, marine gastropod mollusks in the superfamily Conoidea.
Raphitomidae is a family of small to medium-sized sea snails, marine gastropod mollusks in the superfamily Conoidea.
Vitreolina is a genus of very small parasitic sea snails, marine gastropod mollusks or micromollusks in the Eulimidae family.
Pagodulinae is a taxonomic subfamily of predatory sea snails, marine gastropod mollusks in the family Muricidae, the murex shells or rock shells.
