On March 12, 2006 Colombians went to the polls to elect Senate and Chamber of Representatives. Presidential primaries were also held for the Liberal Party and the Alternative Democratic Pole.

Colombia Country in South America

Colombia, officially the Republic of Colombia, is a sovereign state largely situated in the northwest of South America, with territories in Central America. Colombia shares a border to the northwest with Panama, to the east with Venezuela and Brazil and to the south with Ecuador and Peru. It shares its maritime limits with Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, Jamaica, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic. Colombia is a unitary, constitutional republic comprising thirty-two departments, with the capital in Bogota.

Politics of Colombia

The Politics of Colombia take place in a framework of a presidential representative democratic republic, whereby the President of Colombia is both head of state and head of government, and of a multi-party system. Executive power is carried out by the government. Legislative power is vested in both the government and the two chambers of congress, the Senate and the House of Representatives of Colombia. Senate (Belgium) upper house of the Belgian federal parliament

The Senate is one of the two chambers of the bicameral Federal Parliament of Belgium, the other being the Chamber of Representatives. It is considered to be the "upper house" of the Federal Parliament. Created in 1831 as a chamber fully equal to the Chamber of Representatives, it has undergone several reforms in the past, most notably in 1993 and the reform of 2014 following the sixth Belgian state reform. The 2014 elections were the first ones without a direct election of senators. Instead, the new Senate is completely composed of members of community and regional parliaments and co-opted members. It has representation in the Chamber of Representatives and in the Senate of the Congress of the Republic of Colombia, and has also participated in the public corporations of Colombia at a regional level, being stated as the eight most influential political force in the country.

Álvaro Araújo Castro is a Colombian economist and former actor and Senator of Colombia. A Liberal politician, and leader of the ALAS-Team Colombia political movement, he was arrested and jailed in 2007 for participating in parapolitics. Prior to serving in the Senate, he was also a Member of the Chamber of Representatives of Colombia from 1994 to 2001.

2002 Colombian parliamentary election legislative election in Colombia

Parliamentary elections were held in Colombia on 10 March 2002 to elect the Senate and Chamber of Representatives. The Liberal Party remained the largest party but lost its majority in both houses, winning won 54 of the 166 seats in the Chamber and 29 of the 102 seats in the Senate.

Nancy Patricia Gutiérrez Castañeda is a Colombian lawyer and politician. She served as Senator of Colombia and Member of the Chamber of Representatives of Colombia, having served in both chambers as President.

The President of the Congress of Colombia is the leader of the Congress of the Republic of Colombia. The Presidency of Congress is assumed by the person elected as President of the Senate of Colombia by members of the Senate in an election held every year on July 20. The President of the Senate serves a term of one year without a chance for reelection in which s/he also assumes the presidency of Congress. The current President of Congress is Ernesto Macías since July 20, 2018.

1982 Colombian parliamentary election

Parliamentary elections were held in Colombia on 14 March 1982 to elect the Senate and Chamber of Representatives. The result was a victory for the Liberal Party, which won 104 of the 199 Chamber seats and 55 of the 114 Senate seats.

Simón Gaviria Muñoz is a Colombian economist and politician currently serving as Member of the Chamber of Representatives of Colombia since 2006. The son of the 28th President of Colombia, César Gaviria Trujillo, he is also the current National Director of the Colombian Liberal Party since 11 December 2011.

1947 Colombian parliamentary election

Parliamentary elections were held in Colombia on 16 March 1947 to elect the Senate and Chamber of Representatives, the first occasion on which the Senate was directly elected. The result was a victory for the Liberal Party, which won 73 of the 131 seats in the Chamber.

2014 Colombian parliamentary election

Legislative elections were held to elect members to both chambers of Congress in Colombia on 9 March 2014. The nationwide constituency for the 102-member Senate was contested, as well as the 166 seats of the House of Representatives, plus the delegates to the Andean Parliament. There were 773 candidates for the Senate, 1528 candidates for the House of Representatives, and 23 candidates for the five Colombian seats in the Andean Parliament. 32,795,962 Colombians had been registered to vote in the elections by the cut-off date of 25 January 2014.
