DC Trident is a professional swimming team based in Washington, D.C. [2] DC Trident competes in the International Swimming League (ISL), which is a global, professional swimming league consisting of ten teams: the DC Trident, the New York Breakers, the L.A. Current, the Cali Condors, the Aqua Centurions, Energy Standard, the London Roar, Team IRON, the Toronto Titans, and the Tokyo Frog Kings. [3]
The team was founded in 2019 as part of the ISL's inaugural season. [4] League founder and President Konstantin Grigorishin selected multi-Olympic medalist Kaitlin Sandeno as the club's general manager. [5]
DC Trident competed in three meets around the world throughout the three-month-long season. The team finished in an overall standing of sixth, scoring 975 total points, and winning a total of 14 races. The men and women contributed nearly the same number of points to the team total, with the women earning 476 points and the men earning 463. [6] The league was split into two brackets, consisting of four teams each – two American and two European clubs. DC Trident competed in a bracket with the Cali Condors, Energy Standard, and the Aqua Centurions. [7]
DC Trident's first meet took place October 5–6 in Indianapolis, Indiana in the United States, where the team took third place. Its next competition took place the next week, October 12–13 in Naples, Italy, where DC Trident once again took third place, this time by a mere half of a point. [8]
The team's third and final meet took place November 16–17, just outside the team's home of Washington, D.C. in College Park, M.D. Labeled by the league as "The American Derby", the meet featured all four ISL teams based in the United States. Following the pattern of the first two meets, DC Trident edged out the New York Breakers to earn third place. [9]

In commemoration of their first season, DC trident announced The Legend of the Trident comic and souvenir program. [17] Created in conjunction with multi award-winning editor Rantz Hoseley, the comic book consists of photos and information on the team and its members, along with an exclusive comic book story written by New York Times bestselling writer Tony Lee.
DC Trident competed in the second season of the ISL with an updated 2020 roster. [18]
DC Trident competed in meets two, four, five, and seven in Budapest. During their first meet, they placed third with a total of 350 points. In their second meet, they placed fourth with 287 points. In their third meet, they placed fourth with 287 points. In their fourth and final meet of the season, they placed fourth with 256 points. Their total of 1181 points placed them ninth among the ten teams.

Marco Koch is a German competitive swimmer who specializes in breaststroke events. He is a former world record holder in the 200 meter breaststroke.
Hali Flickinger is an American professional swimmer who specializes in freestyle, butterfly, and individual medley events. She represents the Cali Condors of the International Swimming League.
Caeleb Remel DresselOLY is an American professional swimmer who specializes in freestyle, butterfly, and individual medley events. He swims representing the Cali Condors as part of the International Swimming League. He won a record seven gold medals at the 2017 World Aquatics Championships in Budapest, nine medals, six of which were gold, at the 2018 World Swimming Championships in Hangzhou, and eight medals, including six gold, at the 2019 World Aquatics Championships in Gwangju. Dressel is a seven-time Olympic gold medalist and holds world records in the 100 meter butterfly, 50 meter freestyle, and 100 meter individual medley.
Lillia Camille King is an American swimmer who specializes in breaststroke. She currently represents the Cali Condors, a team that is part of the International Swimming League. At the 2016 Summer Olympics, she won the gold medal in the 100-meter breaststroke competition and also won a gold medal in the 4x100 meter medley relay, in which she swam the breaststroke leg. At the 2020 Summer Olympics, King won a silver medal in the 4x100 meter medley relay for her efforts in the prelims, the silver medal in the 200-meter breaststroke, and the bronze medal in the 100-meter breaststroke. She is the current world record holder in the long course 100-meter breaststroke.
Blake John Pieroni is a three-time Olympic gold medalist in swimming. He is a two time Olympian and gold medalist in the 4×100-meter freestyle relay at both the 2016 Summer Olympics and the 2020 Summer Olympics. On the relay in 2016, he swam in the prelims of the race, on the 2020 Olympics 4×100-meter freestyle relay he swam in both the prelims and the final. He also won a gold medal in the 4x100-meter medley relay at the 2020 Olympic Games, swimming the freestyle leg of the relay in the prelims.
Justin Ress is an American swimmer. As a member of the USA national team Justin won the gold medal in the 50 meter backstroke at the 2022 FINA World Championships and was a member of the USA gold medal winning 4X100 free relay. He was also a key part of the USA team that defeated Australia in the resumption of the Duel in the Pool series in 2022. Ress competed as a member of the Cali Condors of the International Swimming League from 2019-2021 and looks forward to resumption of ISL in the near future. Ress was US national champion in the 100 backstroke in 2022 and 50 backstroke in 2017 after which he competed in the men's 50 meter backstroke event at the 2017 World Aquatics Championships. Ress swam collegiately for North Carolina State University where he was a 3-time NCAA champion, 21-time NCAA All-American, and 11-time ACC champion. In his first year at school he won the 2016 ACC Freshman of the Year award.
Mark Szaranek is a Scottish swimmer. He currently represents the Cali Condors which is part of the International Swimming League. Szaranek's swimming career began with his father, John, as coach. He first trained at Glenrothes Swimming Club and was coached by his father at Carnegie swimming club and then the University of Edinburgh where he is performance coach.
Zach Harting is an American competitive swimmer who specializes in the butterfly and freestyle events. He currently represents the DC Trident which is part of the International Swimming League. He competed in the men's 200 metre butterfly at the 2019 World Aquatics Championships. In 2021, he qualified for the 2020 Summer Olympics in the 200m Butterfly.
The International Swimming League (ISL) is an annual professional swimming league, established in 2019. It features a team-based competition format with fast-paced race sessions. In 2019, the regular season started in October and the Final Match was held in December.
Energy Standard is one of the four founding European teams for the International Swimming League. The team is based in Paris, France and trains out of the Gloria Sports Arena in Belek, Turkey.
Giles Smith is an American competitive swimmer who specializes in the butterfly and freestyle events. He currently represents the DC Trident which is part of the International Swimming League.
The LA Current is a professional swimming club and one of the original eight clubs of the International Swimming League. The team is based in Los Angeles led by general manager Lenny Krayzelburg and head coach David Marsh.
The Cali Condors are a professional swimming club and one of the original eight clubs of the International Swimming League. The team is based in San Francisco led by general manager Jason Lezak and head coach Gregg Troy. Assistant Coaches for the 2019 Season were Dean Boxall, Jeff Julian, and Linda Kiefer.
Team Iron is a professional swimming team co-owned by Katinka Hosszú, and a founding member of the International Swimming League. The team is based in Budapest, Hungary, led by general manager Dorina Szekeres and head coach Jozsef Nagy.
Ian Finnerty is a retired American competitive swimmer who specialized in the breaststroke and individual medley events. He represented the DC Trident which is part of the International Swimming League.
NY Breakers is a professional swimming club and one of the original eight clubs of the global International Swimming League (ISL) based in New York City led by general manager, Tim Teeter and head coach, Martin Truijens. The ISL is owned by Konstantin Grigorishin and had its inaugural season in 2019. The original eight clubs were: DC Trident, the New York Breakers, the LA Current, and the Cali Condors in the United States of America, and the Aqua Centurions, Energy Standard, the London Roar, and IRON in Europe. In 2020 ISL added the Toronto Titans (Canada) and a Tokyo team (Japan) for a total of ten teams.
Tristan Jason Hollard is an Australian competitive swimmer who specializes in the backstroke events. He currently represents the DC Trident which is part of the International Swimming League.
London Roar is a professional swimming club based in London and one of the first clubs of the International Swimming League (ISL) to be formed. It was formed in March 2019, with an international roster of swimmers including Adam Peaty who was among the first to support the formation of ISL independent of FINA. It is run by its general manager Rob Woodhouse. London hosted the sixth of the seven meets in ISL's inaugural season in 2019. The team finished second in 2019 and third in 2020.
The Aqua Centurions is a professional swimming club and one of the original eight clubs of the International Swimming League. The team is based in Rome, IT led by general manager Alessandra Guerra and head coach Matteo Giunta.
The 2021 International Swimming League was the third edition of the International Swimming League, a professional swimming league, established in 2019. It comprised ten teams composed of both women and men. The league, due to COVID-19 pandemic travel restrictions, consisted of a total of eighteen short course swimming meets, called matches, spanning four stages of competition and held in two locations. In each match, swimmers from four different teams competed in individual, relay, and skins events. The ten regular season matches and one play in match took place in the city of Naples, Italy. The six play off matches in the semifinals stage of competition took place in the city of Eindhoven, Netherlands, as did the final match.
