Giles Smith (born November 28, 1991) is an American competitive swimmer who specializes in the butterfly and freestyle events. [2] He currently represents the DC Trident which is part of the International Swimming League. [1]
Giles Smith was born November 28, 1991, in Baltimore, Maryland as the son of Harold and Marcia Smith. [3] He attended McDonogh School. Smith swam collegiately at the University of Tennessee for a year and then transferred to the University of Arizona to continue his college career from 2012 to 2014.
During his freshman year with the Volunteers, Smith was a member of the 200 and 800-yard freestyle relays at the 2011 Men's NCAA Division I Championships and earned All-American Honors. [4]
At the 2012 Men's NCAA Division I Championships as a sophomore, Smith placed second in the 100-yard butterfly and 14th in the 100-yard freestyle. He also contributed to the Wildcats 400-yard freestyle and medley relays, which finished in sixth and second place, respectively.
Smith gained momentum during his junior season as he was a member of the third place 200-yard medley and fourth place 200-yard freestyle relays at the 2013 Pac-12 Championships. He finished third in the 100-yard butterfly and eight in the 100-yard freestyle. At the 2013 Men's NCAA Division I Championships, Smith placed sixth in the 100-yard butterfly and 19th in the 50 free. He also contributed to the winning 400-yard medley relay, which was also a new NCAA and American record.
At the 2014 Pac-12 Championships, Smith gained the victory in the 100-yard butterfly (45.92) and both medley relays. He also finished 12th in the 100-yard freestyle, 22nd in the 50-yard freestyle and was a member of the 400-yard freestyle relay which got the silver medal. At his final NCAAs, Smith finished fourth in the 100-yard butterfly and was a member of the 200, 400 and 800-yard freestyle relays, which placed fourth, 14th and 12th, respectively.
Smith’s first national meet was the 2007 Speedo Junior Nationals at age 15. [5] At the 2010 USA Swimming Championships, Smith achieved his first Olympic Trial cuts in the 100m freestyle and butterfly. At the 2012 United States Olympic Trials, he placed eight in the 100m butterfly and 50th in the 100m freestyle.
Smith earned a spot for the 2013 World University Games in Kazan, Russia, by placing 15th in the 100m freestyle, seventh in the 100m butterfly and 5th in the 50m butterfly. [6] At the meet, he won bronze as part of the 4x100m medley relay and anchored the 4x100mfreestyle relay to secure fourth place overall for team USA. [7]
At the 2015 Pan-American Games in Toronto, Smith won a gold medal in the 100m butterfly with a 52.04, which was also a new games record. [8] In addition, Smith went home with a silver as being part of the 400m medley relay.
Smith was a member of the inaugural International Swimming League (ISL) representing DC Trident. [9] He competed at the first two matches held in Indianapolis, Indiana, and Naples, Italy, respectively, as well as in the American Derby held in College Park, Maryland.
Regan Smith is an American competitive swimmer. As of 2022, Smith trains under Bob Bowman with the Arizona State University professional training group. She is the world junior record holder in the women's long course 100-meter backstroke and 200-meter backstroke and a former world record holder in the long course 100-meter backstroke and the 200-meter backstroke. She competed at the 2020 Summer Olympics in three events representing the United States, winning a bronze medal in the 100-meter backstroke, a silver medal in the 200-meter butterfly, and a silver medal in the 4×100-meter medley relay. At the World Aquatics Championships, she won individual gold medals in the 200-meter backstroke in 2019 and the 100-meter backstroke in 2022 and a relay gold medal swimming the backstroke leg of the 4x100 medley relay in 2023.
Zachary "Zach" Douglas Apple is a retired American competitive swimmer who specialized in the sprint freestyle events. He used to swim for DC Trident in the International Swimming League. He won his first Olympic gold medal in the 4x100-meter freestyle relay at the 2020 Summer Olympics, swimming in the prelims and the final of the event, and later in the same Olympic Games won a gold medal and helped set a new world record and Olympic record in the 4x100-meter medley relay, swimming the freestyle leg of the relay in the final.
Andrey Dmitriyevich Minakov is a Russian swimmer and Olympian. He is the Russian record holder in the long course 100 metre butterfly. He is a former world junior record holder in the long course and short course 50 metre butterfly and long course 100 metre freestyle. At the 2019 World Aquatics Championships, he won silver medals in the 100 metre butterfly and 4×100 metre freestyle relay, and a bronze medal in the 4×100 metre medley relay. In 2021, at the 2020 Summer Olympics, he placed fourth in the 100 metre butterfly, fourth in the 4×100 metre medley relay, seventh in the 4×100 metre freestyle relay, and tenth in the 100 metre freestyle. He also won two gold medals, one silver medal, and three bronze medals at the 2021 World Short Course Championships. In 2022, he won the NCAA title in the 100 yard butterfly.
Zach Harting is an American competitive swimmer who specializes in the butterfly and freestyle events. He currently represents the DC Trident which is part of the International Swimming League. He competed in the men's 200 metre butterfly at the 2019 World Aquatics Championships. In 2021, he qualified for the 2020 Summer Olympics in the 200m Butterfly.
Robert Howard is an American former competitive swimmer who specialized in the sprint freestyle events. He represented the DC Trident in the International Swimming League.
Ian Finnerty is a retired American competitive swimmer who specialized in the breaststroke and individual medley events. He represented the DC Trident which is part of the International Swimming League.
Amy Bilquist is an American competitive swimmer who specializes in the backstroke and freestyle events. She represented LA Current in the 2019 season of the International Swimming League and will represent DC Trident in the 2020 season.
Lindsey Kozelsky is an American competitive swimmer who specializes in the breaststroke events. She is married to William Kozelsky and her maiden name is Horejsi. She will represent DC Trident in the International Swimming League during the 2020 season.
Ryan Hoffer is an American competitive swimmer who specializes in freestyle and butterfly events. He competes as part of the International Swimming League for the team DC Trident. Hoffer is currently the national age group record holder in the 100 yard freestyle for the boys 17-18 year old age group. He won two silver medals at the 2015 FINA World Junior Swimming Championships in relay events.
Kieran Smith is an American swimmer specializing in freestyle and individual medley events. He currently co-holds short course world records in the 4×200-meter freestyle relay and the 4×100-meter medley relay. He is the Americas record holder in the long course 400-meter freestyle and the American record holder in the 500-yard freestyle. At the 2022 Fina World Swimming Championships in Budapest, Hungary, Huske, just 19, became one of only four American women in history to win six medals at a World Championships.
Andrew Patrick “Drew” Kibler is an American competition swimmer specializing in freestyle events. He is a world record holder in the short course 4×200 meter freestyle relay and a former American record holder in the 4×200 yard freestyle relay. He won a gold medal in the 4×200 meter freestyle relay each at the 2022 World Aquatics Championships and the 2022 World Short Course Championships and placed fourth in the event at the 2020 Summer Olympics. In the 200 meter freestyle, he took fourth-place at both the 2022 World Aquatics Championships and the 2022 World Short Course Championships. He is also a three-time NCAA champion in the 4×200 yard freestyle relay, winning NCAA titles in the event in 2019, 2021, and 2022.
Katherine Cadwallader Douglass is an American competitive swimmer. A versatile swimmer who competes in many events, Douglass won her first major international medal at the 2020 Summer Olympics with a bronze in the 200 m individual medley. She won three medals at the 2022 World Championships. Douglass then won six medals, including two golds, at the 2023 World Championships. At the 2024 World Championships, she won five medals, including two golds.
Shaine Casas is an American professional swimmer. He is an Americas record holder in the short course 4×50 meter medley relay, swimming the butterfly leg of the relay. At the 2021 World Short Course Championships, he won the gold medal in the 100-meter backstroke, a silver medal in the 200-meter backstroke, and placed seventh in the 50-meter backstroke. In 2022, at the year's World Aquatics Championships, he won the bronze medal in the 200-metre backstroke. Later in the year, at the 2022 World Short Course Championships, he won the silver medal in the 200-metre backstroke and placed fourth in the finals of the 100-meter individual medley and 200-meter individual medley.
Ellen Walshe is an Irish swimmer. She competed at the 2020 Summer Olympics in the 100 metre butterfly and the 200 metre individual medley. At the 2021 World Swimming Championships, she won the silver medal in the 400 metre individual medley. She was the first swimmer representing Ireland to win a medal higher than a bronze medal at a World Swimming Championships. Collegiately, she competes for the Tennessee Volunteers.
Matthew Sates is a South African swimmer. He is the African record holder in the short course 200 metre freestyle, 400 metre freestyle, and 200 metre individual medley as well as the South African record holder in the 400 metre individual medley. He is the 2022 World Short Course champion in the 200 metre individual medley and bronze medalist in the 400 metre individual medley. At the 2022 NCAA Division I Championships, he won the NCAA title in the 500 yard freestyle. Youssef Ramadan is an Egyptian swimmer. He is an African record holder in the short course 4×50 metre medley relay and 4×100 metre medley relay, where he swam butterfly leg on both relays. He competed at the 2020 Summer Olympics in the 100 metre butterfly, placing sixteenth in the semifinals. At the 2021 World Short Course Championships, he placed fourth in the 100 metre butterfly and thirteenth in the 100 metre freestyle.
