Dastilbe is an extinct genus of prehistoric marine & freshwater ray-finned fish from the Early Cretaceous of Brazil. It was a relative of modern milkfish. [2]
Only one definitive species is known, D. crandalli Jordan, 1910 from the Aptian of the Muribeca Formation (Sergipe-Alagoas Basin) and the Crato Formation, where it is an abundant fossil fish. The species D. elongatusSilvas Santos, 1947 from the Parnaíba Basin (Codó Formation) is sometimes considered its own species, but is now generally considered synonymous with D. crandalli. [3] [4] Other studies have found extensive morphological variation within D. crandalli, and have suggested that it may represent a species complex. [5] Potential undescribed species are also known from the Maceió Formation of the Alagoas Basin, and at levels of the Muribeca Formation younger than the levels that D. crandalli was found in. [4]
Several other chanid taxa have previously been assigned to Dastilbe or have even been considered conspecific with D. crandalli, but are now considered distinct genera and species. The species 'D. minor' Santos, 1975 from the Aptian-aged Marizal Formation of Bahia, was assigned to Dastilbe as a nomen nudum , but was revived and reclassified into its own genus ( Nanaichthys ) in 2012. [6] The species D. moraesiSantos, 1955 from the Barremian/Aptian of Minas Gerais, Brazil (Areado Formation) was placed in its own genus, Francischanos , in 2022. [5] D. bataiGayet, 1989 from the Aptian/Albian of Equatorial Guinea, and the only species known outside of Brazil, was reclassified into Parachanos in 2007. [3]
Dastilbe could reach a length of 25–60 millimetres (0.98–2.36 in), with a maximum length of about 150 millimetres (5.9 in). It was probably an anadromous fish, tolerant of hypersalinity and subjected to frequent mass mortality. Larger individuals of this predatory fish fed on small fishes and probably they were also cannibalistic. [7]

The Romualdo Formation is a geologic Konservat-Lagerstätte in northeastern Brazil's Araripe Basin where the states of Pernambuco, Piauí and Ceará come together. The geological formation, previously designated as the Romualdo Member of the Santana Formation, named after the village of Santana do Cariri, lies at the base of the Araripe Plateau. It was discovered by Johann Baptist von Spix in 1819. The strata were deposited during the Aptian stage of the Early Cretaceous in a lacustrine rift basin with shallow marine incursions of the proto-Atlantic. At that time, the South Atlantic was opening up in a long narrow shallow sea.
Charitopsis is an extinct genus of prehistoric marine ray-finned fish that lived during the lower Cenomanian. It was a relative of modern beaked salmons. It contains a single species, C. spinosus from the Sannine Formation of Lebanon. It is possibly related to the sympatric gonorynchid Charitosomus, although some anatomical traits are more similar to the Cenozoic gonorynchids.
Araripichthys is an extinct genus of marine ray-finned fish that lived from the Aptian to Coniacian stages of the Cretaceous period. The genus is named after the Araripe Basin, where it was found in the Crato and Santana Formations. Other fossils of the genus have been found at Goulmima in Morocco, the Tlayua Formation of Mexico and the Apón Formation of Venezuela.

Anaethalion is an extinct genus of prehistoric marine and freshwater ray-finned fish related to modern tarpons and ladyfish. It is known from the Late Jurassic to the Early Cretaceous of Europe and northeasterrn Asia, roughly encompassing the Tethys Ocean.

Caeus is an extinct genus of prehistoric marine ray-finned fish, closely related to the modern milkfish. It contains a single species, C. leopoldi from the Early Cretaceous of the Pietraroja Plattenkalk, Italy. It is one of the largest teleosts known from the Pietraroja formation, and is known by only a single specimen.

Ellimmichthys is an extinct genus of freshwater clupeomorph fish belonging to the order Ellimmichthyiformes, of which it is the type genus. It was a distant relative of modern herrings and anchovies. It inhabited freshwater rift lakes in the supercontinent of West Gondwana during the Early Cretaceous, and fossil remains are known from formations in both South America (Brazil) and Africa.
