David Gerard Simmons CNZM (born 6 October 1955) is a New Zealand lecturer in tourism policy. During his university years, he was a rowing cox, winning bronze medals at two world rowing championships.
Simmons was born in 1955 in Christchurch. [1] [2] He was the cox for the eight in the 1975 World Rowing Championships in Nottingham, Great Britain, and won a bronze medal. [3] He represented New Zealand at the 1976 Summer Olympics. He is listed as New Zealand Olympian athlete number 375 by the New Zealand Olympic Committee. [4]
Simmons gained a Bachelor of Science and then a Master of Applied Science from the University of Canterbury. [5] He wrote his PhD at the University of Waterloo in Canada. Since 1980, he has lectured in tourism policy at Lincoln University, where he is now an emeritus professor. [6]
In the 2023 New Year Honours, Simmons was appointed a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit (CNZM), for services to tourism and tertiary education. [7]
Barry John Maister is a former New Zealand field hockey player, who was a member of the national team that won the gold medal at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal. He is also a former member of the International Olympic Committee.

Alexander Robert McLean is a former New Zealand rower who won an Olympic bronze medal.
Ivan Carl Sutherland is a former New Zealand rower who won an Olympic bronze medal. At the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, he crewed the eight along Tony Hurt, Alec McLean, Trevor Coker, Peter Dignan, Lindsay Wilson, Joe Earl and Dave Rodger and Simon Dickie (cox). The 1977 World Rowing Championships saw Sutherland win silver in the coxless four with Des Lock, David Lindstrom and Dave Rodger under new coach Harry Mahon. Sutherland was also the rowing team manager for New Zealand at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul and the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona. He was subsequently a national rowing selector.
David Marsden Rodger is a former New Zealand rower who won an Olympic bronze medal.
Brett James Hollister is a former New Zealand rowing cox who won an Olympic bronze medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. Since 2004, he had held management positions for rugby union and is the current chief executive officer of the North Harbour Rugby Union
Ian Andrew Wright is a former New Zealand rower who won an Olympic bronze medal at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. Wright has won 31 national titles during his career. After his rowing career ended, he became a coach and his Swiss lightweight men's four team won gold at the 2016 Summer Olympics. He is now Australia's head rowing coach announced in September 2016. He immediately coached the Australian men's four to a gold medal at the 2017 world rowing championships.
Christopher Sherratt White is a former New Zealand rower and Olympic Bronze medallist at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. He is described as "one of the giants of New Zealand rowing" and with 38 national titles, holds the record for most domestic rowing titles in New Zealand.
Hamish Bryon Bond is a retired New Zealand rower and former road cyclist. He is a three-time Olympic gold medallist at the 2012 London Olympic Games, the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games, and at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. He won six consecutive World Rowing Championships gold medals in the coxless pair and set the current world best times in both the coxless and coxed pair. He made a successful transition from rowing to road cycling after the 2016 Summer Olympics focussing on the road time trial. He returned to rowing for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, winning a gold medal in the men's eight.
Eric Gordon Murray is a retired New Zealand rower and gold medalist at the 2012 London Olympic Games, as well as at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games. He won six consecutive World Rowing Championship gold medals in the coxless pair plus two other gold medals in the coxless four and coxed pair. In 2012 an 2014 he set two world best times in the coxless pair and coxed pair respectively, which as of 2021 still stand as the world's best in those boat classes.
Scott David Durant is a British rower and gold medallist in the Men's Eight at the 2016 Olympic Summer Games.
Thomas James Murray is a New Zealand rower. Born and raised in Blenheim, he is a member of New Zealand's national rowing team and has competed in the eight and in the coxless pair. In the smaller boat, he has medalled in two World Rowing Championships; bronze in 2017 and silver in 2019. At the 2016 Rio Olympics, he competed with the eight and won gold in the same boat class at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Murray has won four consecutive premier national titles in the coxless pair. He has been world champion in age group rowing events three times.
Caleb Shepherd is a New Zealand rowing cox. He holds the world best time in the men's coxed pair (2014) and represented at the Rio Olympics in the New Zealand eight. He coxed the New Zealand women's eight to their 2019 World Championship title and has been twice a world champion.
