Armament

The Dekabrist class, also known as Series I, were the first class of submarines built for the Soviet Navy after the October Revolution of 1917. They were authorized in the Soviet Naval Shipbuilding Program of 1926, marking the revival of submarine design in Russia. They were authorized in the Soviet Naval Shipbuilding Program of 1926, and began their sea trials in 1930.

Of the six vessels built, two survived World War II, and one submarine of the class is now a museum ship.

Design and construction

A set of performance and design criteria for the new submarine type, known as an "operational-tactical requirement", was formulated in 1923,[ citation needed ] but converting this into reality posed challenges. The Red Navy of the 1920s retained a respectable submarine fleet and associated practical skills in construction and maintenance, but was lacking in recent design experience. No new Russian submarine design had been brought into production since the Bars class, the plans for which had been finalised in 1912, and associated specialist knowledge had diminished, while there was a sense that the latest foreign submarine technology was now considerably more advanced. Thus, in an attempt to obtain up-to-date design information, Boris Malinin was attached to a Soviet naval mission which embarked on a tour of shipyards in Western Europe in 1925. [1] [2]

Although Germany's socialist government persuaded their reluctant navy to share some older designs from the First World War, [3] [4] sources agree that the most useful information was obtained in Italy. However, statements of what was acquired are very inconsistent. The memoirs of Sergei Alexandrovich Bazilevsky, a younger designer who subsequently joined Malinin's team on the Dekabrist project in 1927, state that the mission had obtained plans of the Italian submarine Ballila, but modern sources do not agree on which submarine is meant. Some authorities state that these were plans for the brand-new ocean-going Balilla-class submarine, impressively large boats (1,450 tons surface displacement, 86.5 metres long) which had been laid in down in early 1925. [2] [5] Others assert that they were instead the plans of a much older and smaller submarine of the same name, laid down as far back as 1913 (717 tons surface displacement, 65 meters long), which had been obtained in a second-hand bookshop in Rome, and were of little real value. [1] Adding to the confusion, there are also claims that the delegation obtained plans from the Italian shipyard Cantieri dell'Adriatico. [6] [7] Presumably this is a reference to CRDA, but this conglomerate was only formed in 1929-30 and was not directly involved with either of the Ballila designs. Probably related to this is a claim that Malinin obtained plans for the Pisani class built by one of CRDA's precursors CNT, construction work on which was just beginning during the delegation's visit to Italy. [8] Alteratively, it may be relevant that CRDA - meaning presumably one of its precursors, CNT or STT - are credited with involvement in the underlying design work on the deep-diving double hull design used by the new Ballila class. [9]

Regardless of exactly what information the Soviet delegation obtained, they acquired some insights into Italian submarine technology: most obviously, while the Soviet fleet consisted of boats of "single-hull" construction in which equipment such as ballast tanks was largely contained inside the pressure hull, the Italians had pioneered double–hull construction in which equipment was placed around the outside of the pressure hull, enclosed by a separate external fairing known as the "light hull", allowing a more streamlined exterior and a more spacious interior (the new Balilla class of the 1920s was built this way, [9] though neither the older Balilla of 1913, [10] nor the Pisani class); [9] in addition, whereas existing Soviet boats had a diving depth limited to around 50 meters, the Italians were building stronger hulls capable of diving to around 100 meters (used on the new Balilla and the Pisani), and while previous Russian submarines had a hull length of no more than 70 meters and a surface displacement of below 700 tons, the Italians were building much larger submarines - the new Ballila was twice this displacement and about 20% longer. Another important difference was that existing Soviet boats filled the ballast tanks mechanically during a dive, while the Italians simply flooded them via seacocks.

Many parallels to the Italian design tradition can be identified in the new Dekabrist design, particularly in the hull structure and ballast arrangements: the heavy gauge of the pressure hull, designed to withstand depths of 90 meters (and constructed using high-quality armour plate from scrapped battle cruisers), [11] the double-hull design, which enclosed the pressure hull in a separate "light hull" and housed the main ballast tanks in the space in between, [12] the division of the interior of the submarine into multiple watertight compartments (though as the design evolved, the original Italian-style spherical bulkheads, designed to maxmise the integrity of key compartments, were replaced with flat circular ones), [12] the use of Italian-style ballast tanks, which was expected to speed up diving time, [13] and the addition of a crash dive tank amidships, which as Bazilevsky recounts was misinterpreted as being designed to dive quickly from periscope depth rather than directly from the surface, and reduced in relative size compared with the one in the Italian blueprints, though it proved possible to scale it up again when its intended purpose was discovered. [14] [12] At 76 meters in length, and with a surfaced displacement of around 1,000 tons, they were significantly larger than any earlier submarines in the Soviet fleet (or any built in Imperial Russia), though not as large as the new Italian Balilla class. Their quoted range of over 7,000 nautical miles was also a dramatic improvement, although not quite as impressive as that of the larger Balilla.

That said, it is clear that the Dekabrist was not simply a copy of an Italian design, but a synthesis of Italian concepts and existing Soviet knowledge, although the most easily recognizable native features are ones that were not strictly necessary in the new design. The pressure hull was scaled up from the proven Bars class, which was regarded as something of a benchmark for reliability, though its streamlining seems unnecessary in a double-hulled boat; [13] [11] while the presence of extra ballast tanks beneath the deck casing (apparently intended for quick diving from periscope depth) was also clearly based on this type, and they are described as being equally unnecessary in conjunction with the Italian-inspired diving system. [13] [12] Other features which resemble older Russian designs include the relatively large ballast tanks at the bow and stern, now employed as trim tanks, and the placing of the batteries in sealed compartments in the forward hull. [12] In general, individual components were either based directly on those used in existing Russian boats, or else newly designed. [15]

Armament consisted of a heavy forward salvo of six torpedo launchers in the bow, and two more at the stern, [11] designed for the 21-inch torpedoes which had become the standard international calibre, though until a suitable weapon entered production, older 18-inch torpedoes had to be carried, using special inserts to hold them in place. [16] As originally designed, each submarine was to have two 4-inch guns in streamlined gun shields which formed fairings at the front and back of the conning tower, but the configuration was subsequently modified in imitation of the British L-class submarine, with a single forward-facing gun on a raised platform protected by a high bulwark, designed to make it easier to fight the gun in heavy seas. [17] A new anti-aircraft version of the gun was also adopted. [18]

An unusual design feature inherited from pre-revolutionary designs was an anchor designed to allow the submarine to secure itself against the seabed while submerged, though on the Dekabrist class this caused alarming incidents in early trials, and may never have been used subsequently. [19]

An order of six boats was divided equally between the Baltic and the Black Sea Fleets of the Soviet Navy: three vessels were constructed by the Ordzhonikidze Shipyard in Leningrad, and the other three at the Marti Yard at Nikolayev. They were given names commemorating historical revolutionary movements (the Baltic boats being Dekabrist, Narodovolets and Krasnogvardyeyets, after the Decembrists, Narodnaya Volya and the Red Guards, later designated D-1 through D-3, their Black Sea counterparts being Revolutsioner, Spartakovets and Yakobinets, i.e. "Revolutionary", "Spartacist" and "Jacobin", later designated D4 through D-6). The first boat in the class was laid down on March 5, 1927; launched on November 3, 1928, and commissioned on November 18, 1930. This first boat, Dekabrist, was later designated D-1 on September 15, 1934. [20]

The initial dockyard trials of the type were not entirely successful. Early diving trials on the Revolutsioner in March 1930 revealed that the boat listed sharply to one side during diving, a problem which the designers knew had also been encountered by double-hulled German designs like U-139. [21] Similar problems were encountered on Dekabrist two months later, with the boat listing to port and then sharply overcorrecting to starboard. Although no agreement could be reached on the precise scientific reasons, an acceptable solution was found by separating the ballast tanks more strictly into port and starboard units which flooded separately and thus more symmetrically. [16] [21] Bazilevsky later insisted that the only real problem was an asymmetrical weight distribution, which could be corrected by a small quantity of ballast, but which had not been detected at the start of the trial due to a miscalibrated inclinometer. [22] Information on diving speed is hard to come by.[ citation needed ] However they were reported to be good sea-boats, and reached speeds of 15.3 kn (surface) and 8.7 kn (submerged) on trials. [23]

Service history

In May 1933 the three Baltic boats were transferred to the Northern Fleet, in the Arctic Ocean, via the White Sea–Baltic Canal, and are said to have showed high seaworthiness in polar circumstances,[ citation needed ] although D-1 was lost with her entire crew in a diving accident on November 13, 1940, in Motovsky Gulf.

The other five were in service at the start of the Great Patriotic War, although three more were lost in action during the conflict: D-3 was sunk off Norway in June 1942, D-6 was scuttled at Sevastopol in November 1942, and D-4 was sunk off Crimea in December 1943. [23]

The Spartakovets served throughout with the Black Sea Fleet. The Narodovolets was undergoing a refit in Leningrad at the start of the German invasion, and thus became part of the Baltic Fleet - her most notable success being the sinking by torpedo of the German merchant ship SS Jacob Fritzen (4,090 gross register tons) in October 1942. [24] Narodovolets was converted to a training role in the 1950s, but served until the 1980s, and subsequently became a museum ship and war memorial.

Soviet destroyer <i>Opytny</i> 1935 Soviet Navy destroyer

Opytny was the only member of her class of destroyers built for the Soviet Navy during the 1930s. The Soviet designation for her class was Project 45. She was originally named Sergo Ordzhonikidze and was the first Soviet destroyer to be indigenously designed. Renamed Opytny in 1940, the ship was intended as a prototype for future Soviet destroyers.

<i>Ognevoy</i>-class destroyer Soviet destroyers built 1938–1948

The Ognevoy-class destroyers consisted of 26 destroyers built for the Soviet Navy during and immediately after World War II. The official Soviet designation was Project 30 and Project 30K. Construction was disrupted by the invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941 and many ships were cancelled or scrapped. Only a single ship was completed during the war and the other 10 were finished in 1947–1950.

Soviet S-class submarine

The S-class or Srednyaya submarines were part of the Soviet Navy's underwater fleet during World War II. Unofficially nicknamed Stalinets, boats of this class were the most successful and achieved the most significant victories among all Soviet submarines. In all, they sank 82,770 gross register tons (GRT) of merchant shipping and seven warships, which accounts for about one-third of all tonnage sunk by Soviet submarines during the war.

The M-class submarines, also Malyutka class, were a class of small, single-, or 1½-hulled submarines built in the Soviet Union and used during World War II. The submarines were built in sections so they could easily be transported by rail. The production was centered in the Gorky Shipyard on the Volga River, after which the sections were transported by railway to Leningrad for assembly and fitting out. This was the first use of welding on Soviet submarines.

<i>Leninets</i>-class submarine Soviet WW2-era submarine class

The Leninets or L class were the second class of submarines to be built for the Soviet Navy. Twenty-five were built in four groups between 1931 and 1941. They were minelaying submarines and were based on the British L-class submarine, HMS L55, which was sunk during the British intervention in the Russian Civil War. Some experience from the previous Dekabrist-class submarines was also utilised. The boats were of the saddle tank type and mines were carried in two stern galleries as pioneered on the pre-war Russian submarine Krab (1912), the world's first minelaying submarine. These boats were considered successful by the Soviets. Groups 3 and 4 had more powerful engines and a higher top speed.

The Shchuka-class submarines, also referred to as Sh or Shch-class submarines, were a medium-sized class of Soviet submarines, built in large numbers and used during World War II. "Shchuka" is Russian for pike. Of this class, only two submarines entered service after 1945, although they were launched before the war.

The Regele Ferdinand class was a pair of destroyers built in Italy for the Romanian Navy during the late 1920s. The sister ships were the most modern and powerful warships of the Axis powers in the Black Sea during World War II. During the war they participated in the 1941 Raid on Constanța and the 1944 evacuation of the Crimea, although they spent the vast majority of the war escorting convoys in the Black Sea. The Romanians claimed that they sank two submarines during the war, but Soviet records do not confirm their claims. Following King Michael's Coup, where Romania switched sides and joined the Allies in late 1944, the two ships were seized and incorporated into the Soviet Black Sea Fleet. They were returned to Romania in 1951 and served until 1961 when they were scrapped.

<i>Karp</i>-class submarine Warship

The Karp class were a class of submarines built by Krupp Germaniawerft for the Imperial Russian Navy. The class, composed of three boats were ordered in the 1904 emergency programme as a result of the Russo-Japanese War. The design was a twin hull type powered by a kerosene-electric power plant with a 16-fathom diving limit. The boats were delivered late for the war and transferred to the Black Sea Fleet by rail in 1908. In 1909, Kambala was lost. The other two submarines remained in service until their withdrawal in March 1917. They were taken over in April 1918 by the Ukrainian State before being captured by the German Empire in May and transferred to the British following the German surrender in November. The British scuttled Karp and Karas in 1919 to prevent their capture by the Soviets.

<i>Balilla</i>-class submarine Submarine class of the Italian navy

The Balilla class were the first submarines to be built for the Italian navy following the end of World War I. They were large ocean-going cruiser submarines designed to operate in the Indian Ocean based in Italy's East African colonies. The design was double-hulled and based on the German Type UE 2 U-boats, one of which, U-120 was supplied to the Italians as a war reparation. A 425 horsepower (317 kW) auxiliary diesel engine was installed as an extra generator.

The Italian submarine fleet of World War II was the largest in the world at the time, with 116 submarines. It saw action during the Second World War, serving mainly in the Mediterranean. During the conflict 88 submarines, some two-thirds of its total strength, were lost.

Fugas-class minesweeper

The Fugas class were a group of minesweepers built for the Soviet Navy in the 1930s and 1940s. The Soviet designations were Project 3, Project 53, Project 53-U and Project 58.

NMS <i>Mărăști</i> Romanian Navys Vifor-class destroyer

NMS Mărăști was one of four Vifor-class destroyers ordered by Romania shortly before the beginning of the First World War from Italy. All four sister ships were requisitioned when Italy joined the war in 1915. Originally named Vijelie by the Romanians, she was renamed Sparviero in Italian service. Not completed until mid-1917, the ship engaged Austro-Hungarian ships in the Adriatic Sea only twice before the war ended in November 1918. She was given a new name as Mărăști when she was re-purchased by the Romanians in 1920.

NMS Mărășești was one of four Vifor-class destroyers ordered by Romania shortly before the beginning of the First World War from Italy. All four sister ships were requisitioned when Italy joined the war in 1915. Originally named Vârtej by the Romanians, she was renamed Nibbio in Italian service. Not completed until mid-1918, the ship engaged Austro-Hungarian ships in the Adriatic Sea only once before the war ended in November. She was renamed Mărășești when she was re-purchased by the Romanians in 1920.

Soviet destroyer <i>Minsk</i> Destroyer of the Soviet Navy

Minsk was one of six Leningrad-class destroyer leaders built for the Soviet Navy during the 1930s, one of the three Project 38 variants. Completed in 1939, the ship was assigned to the Baltic Fleet and played a minor role in the Winter War against Finland in 1939–1940. After the start of Operation Barbarossa, the German invasion of the Soviet Union in June 1941, Minsk covered minelaying operations and provided naval gunfire support to Soviet units. She escorted ships during the Soviet evacuation of Tallinn, Estonia, in late August. The ship was sunk by German dive bombers on 23 September, although her wreck was salvaged in 1942 and repaired. Minsk was recommissioned in 1943 but the repairs were not completed until the following year. The ship was reclassified as a training ship in 1951, then became a target ship in 1958 and was sunk that year.

Soviet destroyer <i>Moskva</i> Soviet Leningrad-class destroyer leaders

Moskva was one of six Leningrad-class destroyer leaders built for the Soviet Navy during the 1930s, one of the three Project 1 variants. Completed in 1938 and assigned to the Black Sea Fleet, she participated in the Raid on Constanța on 26 June 1941, a few days after the beginning of the German invasion of the Soviet Union. After the ship had finished bombarding targets in the port, she was sunk by a mine.

Soviet destroyer <i>Tbilisi</i> Leningrad-class destroyer

Tbilisi was one of six Leningrad-class destroyer leaders built for the Soviet Navy during the 1930s, one of the three Project 38 variants. Completed in 1940, the ship was assigned to the Pacific Fleet, with which she spent World War II. Tbilisi laid minefields outside Vladivostok early in the war and during the Soviet–Japanese War transported naval infantry in preparation for an amphibious landing in Korea. Postwar, she continued to serve with the Pacific Fleet and began a lengthy overhaul in 1951 that lasted until 1955. Converted into a target ship in 1958, she was finally struck from the Navy List in 1964 and scrapped.

<i>Kiev</i>-class destroyer Soviet class of destroyer leaders

The Kiev class was designed in 1939 for the Soviet Navy as a smaller class of destroyer leaders after the cancellation of the Tashkent-class ships that had been intended to be built in the Soviet Union. Only three ships were begun; one was cancelled and scrapped before the Axis invasion in mid-1941 and construction of the other two was suspended during the war. The navy considered completing them under a new Project 48-K configuration afterwards, but decided against that as they would have been competing against a more modern design that lacked the stability problems that the 48-K design would have had. The Soviets either scrapped them or used them as targets.

D3-class motor torpedo boat

The D-3-class, designated ProjectP-19, was a class of Soviet wooden motor torpedo boats (MTB) built before and during World War II. The D stands for Derevyanniy.

NMS <i>Regele Ferdinand</i> Romanian Navys Regele Ferdinand-class destroyer

NMS Regele Ferdinand was the lead ship of her class of two destroyers built in Italy for the Romanian Navy in the late 1920s. After the Axis invasion of the Soviet Union on 22 June 1941, she was limited to escort duties in the western half of the Black Sea during the war by the powerful Soviet Black Sea Fleet which heavily outnumbered Axis naval forces in the Black Sea. The ship may have sunk two Soviet submarines during the war. In early 1944 the Soviets were able to cut off and surround the port of Sevastopol on the Crimean Peninsula. Regele Ferdinand covered convoys evacuating Axis troops from Sevastopol and was badly damaged in May when she rescued some troops herself.

Slavny was one of 18 Storozhevoy-class destroyers built for the Soviet Navy during the late 1930s. Although she began construction as a Project 7 Gnevny-class destroyer, Slavny was completed in 1941 to the modified Project 7U design.
