Dipankar Ghosh was an Indian mountaineer from West Bengal. [1] He is the first Bengali to climb Mount Everest [2] and had successfully climbed five other eight-thousand-meter peaks besides Mount Everest. [3] [4] In 2019, the Government of India posthumously honored him with the Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award for the year 2018, the highest adventure sports honor in India. [5] He died in 2019. Early life and education

Dipankar Ghosh was born in Belanagar, Howrah. He enrolled in Sabujsathi Primary School in the Uttarpara area of Hooghly. Later, he passed secondary school in 1981 from Raghunathpur Nafar Academy School and graduated from Uttarpara Amarendra Vidyapith. He completed his higher secondary education at Bali Jora Ashwatala School in 1983. Subsequently, he graduated in Science from Vidyasagar College of Calcutta University in 1985. [3]

He received mountaineering training from the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports, Manali; Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering and Winter Sports, Jammu & Kashmir; Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, Darjeeling; and Nehru Institute of Mountaineering, Uttarkashi. [3]

Career

He worked as a computer accessories salesman. Ghosh received support from the west Government of West Bengal and corporate sponsors. He successfully summited Mount Everest in 2011. He conquered K2 (2012), Kangchenjunga (2014), and Dhaulagiri (2017). [7] In 2018, he successfully summited Cho Oyu, the world's sixth-highest peak on the China-Nepal border, 20 kilometers west of Mount Everest. [8]

Death

In May 2019, Dipankar Ghosh went missing during his descent from Makalu in Nepal. [9] His mortal remains were discovered by the rescue team after 8 days of his being missing. [6]

Awards and recognition

In 2019, he was posthumously honored with the Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award for the year 2018 by the Government of India. [5] He also received the Radhanath Sikdar Tenzing Norgay State Award for State Climbers, awarded by the Government of West Bengal and the Bharat Gaurav Award given by the Chief Minister of Haryana. Lopsang Tshering Bhutia was an Indian Sherpa mountaineer who died on Mount Everest and the nephew of Tenzing Norgay. His death made international headlines because he died on the 40th anniversary expedition of his uncle's summiting. His uncle, Tenzing Norgay, had died at home of natural causes in 1986 at the age of 72. Tenzing Norgay was the first person to summit Mount Everest in 1953 along with Sir Edmund Hillary.

Premlata Agrawal is the first Indian woman to scale the Seven Summits, the seven highest continental peaks of the world. She was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 2013 and Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award in 2017 for her achievements in the field of mountaineering. On 17 May 2011, she became the oldest Indian woman to have scaled the world's tallest peak, Mount Everest (29,032 ft.); at the age of 48 years at that time while Sangeeta Sindhi Bahl hailing from Jammu and Kashmir broke Premlata's record on 19 May 2018 and became the oldest Indian woman to scale Mount Everest doing it at the age of 53.

Love Raj Singh Dharmshaktu is an Indian mountaineer who has climbed Mount Everest seven times.

Mamta Sodha is an Indian sportsperson, known for her successful 2010 attempt to scale Mount Everest. She was honoured by the Government of India, in 2014, by bestowing on her the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award, for her services to the field of mountaineering sport.

Kushang Dorjee Sherpa is an Indian Sherpa mountaineer, who in 1998 became the first person to reach the summit of Mount Everest from three sides. In recognition of his achievements, Government of India in 2003 awarded him with Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award.

Mohan Singh Gunjyal is an Indian mountaineer and adventure sportsman. He is one of the summiters of Mount Everest, entering the list when he successfully climbed the highest peak in the world on 12 May 1992. He achieved the feat, taking the Southeast ridge route via the south face, as a member of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police Everest expedition group, which included Santosh Yadav, the first woman to summit the peak twice within a year. He has received the Tenzing Norgay National Award for outstanding achievement from the President of India in 2004. He is a former Assistant Commandant of Indo-Tibetan Border Police and presently working as Director at the Uttarkashi-based Nanda Devi Institute of Adventure Sports and Outdoor Education. The Government of India awarded him with Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award 2004 in lifetime achievement category and the fourth highest civilian honor of the Padma Shri, in 2006, for his contributions to the sport of mountaineering.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Sonam Gyatso (mountaineer)</span> Mountaineer

Sonam Gyatso (1923–1968) was an Indian mountaineer. He was the 2nd Indian man, the 17th man in world and first person from Sikkim to summit Mount Everest, the highest peak in the world. He was one of the nine summiters of the first successful Indian Everest Expeditions that climbed Mount Everest in May 1965 led by Captain M S Kohli. The first time that the oldest man at the time, Sonam Gyatso at age 42, and the youngest man Sonam Wangyal at age 23, climbed Everest together on 22 May 1965. He became the oldest person to scale the peak in 1965 and when he spent 50 minutes at the peak, he set a world record for spending the longest time at the highest point on Earth. The Government of India awarded him the third highest honour of the Padma Bhushan, in 1965, for his contributions to the sport of mountaineering.

Satyarup Siddhanta is a Bangalore-based Indian mountaineer. Satyarup became the youngest mountaineer in the world and the first from India to climb both the Seven Summits and Volcanic Seven Summits on 15 January 2019 at 10:10 pm Chile time. Guinness World Records approved this claim.

Aparna Kumar is an Indian mountaineer. She was awarded the Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award in 2018 for land adventure by the President of India.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Anshu Jamsenpa</span> Indian mountaineer

Anshu Jamsenpa is an Indian mountaineer and the first woman in the world to scale the summit of Mount Everest twice in a season, and the fastest double summiter to do so within five days. It is also the fastest double ascent of the tallest crest by a woman. She is from Bomdila, headquarters of West Kameng district, Arunachal Pradesh - the state that holds the most north-eastern position in India. She was awarded India's fourth-highest civilian award the Padma Shri in 2021.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award</span> Indian adventure sports award

The Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award, formerly known as the National Adventure Awards is the highest adventure sports honour of the Republic of India. The award is named after Tenzing Norgay, one of the first two individuals to reach the summit of Mount Everest along with Edmund Hillary in 1953. It is awarded annually by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. The recipients are honoured for their "outstanding achievement in the field of adventure activities on land, sea and air" over the last three years. The lifetime achievement is awarded to individuals who have demonstrated excellence and have devoted themselves in the promotion of adventure sports. As of 2020, the award comprises "a bronze statuette of Tenzing Norgay along with a cash prize of 15 lakh (US$19,000)."

Savita Kanswal was an Indian mountaineer hailing from Uttarakhand. She is the first Indian woman to conquer both Mount Everest and Makalu within 16 days. She died in an avalanche accident on October 4, 2022. In January 2024, she posthumously received the Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award, the highest honor in adventure sports in India.
