The United States Mint has minted numerous commemorative coins to commemorate persons, places, events, and institutions since 1848. Many of these coins are not intended for general circulation, but are still legal tender. The mint also produces commemorative medals, which are similar to coins but do not have a face value, and therefore are not legal tender.
In 1983 and 1984, the United States Mint issued a series of commemorative coins to commemorate the 1984 Summer Olympic games held in Los Angeles. These coins were authorized by Public Law 97-220.
The United States Commemorative Coin Act of 1996 is a United States federal law which established a commemorative coin program within the United States Mint in 1996. In addition, the law specifically authorized commemorative coins to observe the 150th anniversary of the death of Dolley Madison, to honor George Washington, the 125th anniversary of the establishment Yellowstone National Park, and the 50th anniversary of Jackie Robinson's racial desegregation of Major League Baseball. It also established commemorative coin fundraising programs for the Black Revolutionary War Patriots Memorial, Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial, and National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial.
The Robert F. Kennedy silver dollar is a commemorative coin issued by the United States Mint in 1998. It honors former United States Attorney General, U.S. Senator from New York, and assassinated presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy.
The George Washington 250th Anniversary half dollar is a commemorative coin that was issued by the United States Mint in 1982 to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the birth of George Washington. The coin was authorized by Pub. L.Tooltip Public Law 97–104.
The Korean War Memorial silver dollar is a commemorative silver dollar issued by the United States Mint in 1991. The coin commemorated the 38th anniversary of the end of the Korean War.
The White House Bicentennial silver dollar is a commemorative silver dollar issued by the United States Mint in 1992.
The American Buffalo silver dollar is a commemorative silver dollar issued by the United States Mint in 2001. The coin commemorates both the National Museum of the American Indian and the Buffalo nickel, the latter serving as the basis for the dollar's design. The coin was authorized by Pub. The First in Flight Centennial commemorative coins are a series of commemorative coins issued by the United States Mint in 2003. The coins, issued in half dollar, dollar, and eagle ($10) denominations, commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first controlled flight of a powered heavier-than-air aircraft. The coins were authorized by Public Law 105-124.
The Thomas Alva Edison silver dollar is a commemorative silver dollar issued by the United States Mint in 2004. It portrays American inventor Thomas Edison.
The Yellowstone National Park silver dollar is a commemorative coin issued by the United States Mint in 1999. Proceeds benefitted Yellowstone National Park and other national parks via the National Park Foundation.
Library of Congress silver dollar is a commemorative coin issued by the United States Mint in 2000. The coin was part of a two-coin series authorized by Pub. L.Tooltip Public Law 105–268 (text)(PDF) commemorating the 200th anniversary of the Library of Congress.
