Douglas L. Gutwein is a Republican member of the Indiana House of Representatives,representing the 16th District since 2008. He has supported "right-to-work" legislation in Indiana. [1] He retired in 2022.
Gutwein was born in Francesville,Indiana. After graduating from high school,Gutwein served in the US Army for 3 years. During his 3 years he was stationed in Frankfort,Germany and Vietnam. After his service,Gutwein decided to become a city mail carrier in Valparaiso and California. [2]
In 1979 Gutwein returned to Francesville to run his brother's company. Gutwein,several years later,bought out his brother's company. [2]
In 1992 Gutwein was voted president of the town board. The board's main focuses and accomplishments consisted of reformation of zoning laws,a sewer system,an expansion of the public library and increased funding through the Build Indiana program. With the extra money,the board was able to expand not only the size of the town hall but also the police department,the water and sewer department,and the fire department. [2]
Gutwein is a member of the American Legion. [2]
Gutwein and his wife Mary Lew have been married for 33 years. Together the two have two children and three grandchildren. [2]

Ashbel Parsons Willard was state senator,the 12th lieutenant governor,and the 11th governor of the U.S. state of Indiana. His terms in office were marked by increasingly severe partisanship leading to the breakup of the state Democratic Party in the years leading up to the American Civil War. His brother-in-law John Edwin Cook was involved in John Brown's raid on Harpers Ferry,and was executed. Willard went to the south to advocate unsuccessfully for his release,and became despised by southerners who accused him of having a secret involvement in the raid. He died two months before the start of the war while giving a speech on national unity,and was the first governor of Indiana to die in office.
Albert Gallatin Porter was an American politician who served as the 19th governor of Indiana from 1881 to 1885 and as a United States Congressman from 1859 to 1863. Originally a Democrat,he joined the Republican Party in 1856 after being expelled by the pro-slavery faction of the Democratic Party. Only the second person born in Indiana to become the state's governor,he reluctantly accepted his party's nomination to run. His term saw the start of Indiana's industrialization that continued for several decades. The Mallon/Minkert building,at the northeast corner of Montgomery and Bill streets in Francesville,Indiana was built by local businessman John H. Mallon in 1899. It replaced a frame structure on the same site,built in 1872,which burned. Mallon came to Francesville from Morgan County,Indiana in 1865,and in 1868 began to clerk with Samuel Reishling,who is credited as having begun the second-ever business in the town. A few years later Mallon struck out on his own,and the 1883 history of the county says of him,"He is probably doing the leading business of this town." It was built in 1899,and is a two-story,rectangular brick building measuring 40 feet wide and 80 feet deep.
