Purdue University is a public land-grant research university in West Lafayette,Indiana,United States,and the flagship campus of the Purdue University system. Richard Owen was a Scottish-born geologist,natural scientist,educator,and American military officer who arrived in the United States in 1828 and settled at New Harmony,Indiana. Owen,who was trained as a natural scientist and physician,served as an infantry officer in the U.S. Army during the Mexican–American War and the American Civil War. After the Civil War,Owen taught at Indiana University for fifteen years (1864–79) and chaired its natural science department. While retaining his faculty position at IU,Owen also served as Purdue University's first president (1872–74). During the interwar years,Owen taught natural science at the Western Military Institute in Kentucky and after its merger with the University of Nashville in Tennessee. In addition,Owen assisted his brother,David Dale Owen,with early geological studies of the Northwest Territory. In 1860 Richard Owen succeeded his brother to become Indiana's second state geologist. His research interests included geology,meteorology,terrestrial magnetism,and seismology. Owen authored scientific works that included geological surveys of several U.S. states.
Anna Margaret Ross Alexander (1913–1995) was a philanthropist,who organized the first mental health fund drive in Marion County,Indiana. She was elected to the Indianapolis Board of School Commissioners in 1966 during the desegregation and integration period. Under her administration as president in 1970,Indianapolis developed their desegregation plan. She was honored as Woman of the Year in 1970 by Theta Sigma Phi for her service in implementing integration and for being the only woman to have served on the board. She also served on the Tax Review Board and Historic Landmarks Foundation. She had a lifelong commitment to education and has had numerous awards named in her honor.

Addison Clay Harris was a lawyer and civic leader in Indianapolis,Indiana,who served as a Republican member of the Indiana Senate and a U.S. Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary (ambassador) to Austria-Hungary. The Wayne County,Indiana,native graduated from Northwestern Christian University in 1862 and was admitted to the bar in 1865,the same year he established a law partnership with John T. Dye in Indianapolis. Harris was a founding member (1878) and president of the Indianapolis Bar Association;a founder and president of the Indiana Law School,which was a forerunner to the Indiana University Robert H.
