Cherrish Pryor is an American politician from Indianapolis,Indiana. She is a Democratic member of the Indiana House of Representatives,representing the 94th District since 2008. She has served as the Democratic Floor Leader since 2018. The first African American to hold the leadership position. She is also Treasurer for the National Black Caucus of State Legislators. A role she has held since 2021 and was recently re-elected to serve another two year term which will end in 2025.
Pryor began her political career as an Indianapolis City-County Council member,representing the 7th District from 2007 to 2008.
Pryor is a native of Holly Springs,Mississippi and has lived in Indiana since 1986. She graduated from South Side High School in Fort Wayne,Indiana in 1988. She holds a BA from Indiana University in Criminal Justice and a MPA from Indiana University Purdue University (IUPUI).
She moved to Indianapolis in 1995 to work for the Indiana House of Representatives as a legislative intern and was hired as a full-time legislative assistant within two months.
In 2023,Pryor received the Legislator of the Year award from the National Black Caucus of State Legislators. [1]
Julia May Carson was an American politician who served as a member of the United States House of Representatives for Indiana's 7th congressional district from 1997 until she died in 2007. Carson was the first woman and first African American to represent Indianapolis in the U.S. Congress. She was also the second African American woman elected to Congress from Indiana,after Katie Hall,and her grandson AndréCarson succeeded to her seat following her death.

A civil rights activist who became known for her efforts to assist minorities,women,and defendants in Indiana's criminal justice system,Conn became the first woman and the first African American to serve as Indiana's state public defender in 1970. She also served as Indianapolis' assistant city attorney from 1968 to 1970,and twice won election to the Indiana House of Representatives as a Republican until she resigned her legislative seat to become the state public defender.
Daisy Riley Lloyd was the first female African American to serve in the Indiana legislature. She was one of fifteen Democrats who represented Marion County (Indianapolis) in the Indiana House of Representatives during the 94th Indiana General Assembly. She later became a realtor and family counselor and continued to be active in her community.
