Edward Eladio Manibusan is a Northern Marianan attorney and politician serving as the first elected Attorney General of the Northern Mariana Islands. He took office on January 12,2015. He previously served in the position from July 1,1989 to January 8,1990 when it was a gubernatorial appointment.
He graduated from Marianas High School in 1972. [3] He attended the University of Guam from 1972 to 1975 where he earned an associate's degress in political science. [4] Manibusan graduated from California State University at Fullerton with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Law in 1977. He then attended Gonzaga University School of Law and graduated in 1982. [1]
After graduating law school,Manibusan became a public defender. One year later,he was made an assistant attorney general assigned to the criminal division. [1] In 1986,Governor Pedro Pangelinan Tenorio appointed Manibusan,the Director of the Department of Public Safety. Manibusan was sworn in as DPS director on November 14,1986. [5]
He was the appointed Attorney General from 1989 to 1990. He was an Associate Judge of the Superior Court of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands from February 1993 to July 1998, [6] the Presiding Judge of the NMI Superior Court from July 1998 to March 2003, [6] and an attorney in solo private practice. Prior to the election he also held an honorary appointment as the Civilian Aide to the United States Secretary of the Army for the CNMI. [7]
In 1998,Judge Procter Ralph Hug Jr. of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit appointed Manibusan to hold district court in the District of the Northern Mariana Islands during the period beginning Jan. 26,1998 and ending December 31,1998. [8]
Manibusan retired from active government service on March 14,2003. [2] In 2012,he became the chairman of the reorganized Democratic Party of the Northern Mariana Islands. [9] In that capacity he worked to rebuild ties with the Democratic National Committee,achieving such recognition at the 2012 Democratic National Convention. [10] He also sought to ensure the party ran a gubernatorial candidate in the 2014 election,after it failed to do so in 2009. [11] He was succeeded as party chairman by Benjamin M. Cepeda. [12]
The Attorney General,previously an appointed position,became an elected position effective for the 2014 general election. [13] Manibusan was elected in 2014,defeating attorney Michael Evangelista by about a two to one margin. [14] Manibusan succeeded Gilbert Birnbrich,who was appointed by Governor Eloy Inos five months before the election. [13] He was reelected in 2018,without opposition. [15] In 2022,Manibusan defeated former judge Juan Tudela Lizama by approximately ten points to be reelected Attorney General. [16]

The Covenant Party was a political party in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) advocating governmental and financial reform. It was named after the Covenant to Establish a Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands in Political Union with the United States of America,Act of Mar. 24,1976,Pub. L. 94-241,90 Stat. 263,codified as amended at 48 U.S.C. §1801 note. In the legislative elections of 2003,the Covenant Party won nine of eighteen seats. The party mostly made up of members from the Republican Party,but many prominent Democrats would also join the party. In the 2005 general elections,the Covenant Party increased its position as one of the strongest parties in the Commonwealth when Benigno R. Fitial,the party's gubernatorial candidate,won the election. The Covenant Party won seven of eighteen seats in the commonwealth's House of Representatives and three of nine seats in its Senate. In the Commonwealth Legislature 2007 elections,the Covenant Party won only four of twenty seats in the House of Representatives.
Benigno Repeki Fitial is a Northern Marianan politician who served was the sixth governor of the Northern Mariana Islands. The second longest-serving governor in CNMI history,Fitial was elected on November 6,2005,assumed office on January 9,2006,and was re-elected to a (five-year) second term in 2009. He was impeached by the CNMI House of Representatives on February 11,2013,and was scheduled to face trial before the CNMI Senate to determine if he should be removed from office. He resigned on February 20,2013,after 7 years,1 month,and 11 days in office.
The Northern Mariana Islands Senate is the upper house of the Northern Mariana Islands Commonwealth Legislature. The Senate consists of nine senators representing three senatorial districts,each a multi-member constituency with three senators.
Gregorio Kilili Camacho Sablan is a Northern Mariana Islander politician and former election commissioner. Elected in 2008,Sablan became the first delegate to the United States House of Representatives from the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. Sablan is the only Chamorro member of Congress.
The 2009 Northern Mariana Islands general election was held on Saturday,November 7,2009. This was the last general election to be held on a odd year. This election also saw the extension all office holding officials by one year to move the elections to even-years,corresponding with the elections of other federal and state offices,including the nationwide United States House of Representatives elections and the United States general elections. This election also oversaw the first run-off to be held in the Northern Mariana Islands,which were held on Monday,November 23,2009. Benigno Fitial became the first governor to win a second term since 1985 and the first time a candidate won a majority since 1993 thanks to the newly implemented run-off voting system.
Heinz Sablan Hofschneider is a politician from the Northern Mariana Islands. Hofschneider served as the Speaker of the Northern Mariana Islands House of Representatives from 2002 to 2004 and is a four-time candidate for Governor of the Northern Mariana Islands.

Inos,who served as lieutenant governor from 2009 to 2013,first became Governor following the resignation of his predecessor,Benigno Fitial.
Juan Borja Tudela was a Northern Mariana Islander politician and community leader. Tudela was a member of the 14th session of the Northern Mariana Islands House of Representatives and two-term mayor for the island of Saipan,the capital and largest municipality in the Northern Mariana Islands,serving from January 2002 to January 2010.
Same-sex marriage was legalized in the Northern Mariana Islands by the U.S. Supreme Court's landmark ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges on June 26,2015,which struck down same-sex marriage bans nationwide. On June 29,Governor Eloy Inos issued a statement hailing the decision as "historic",and said he would work with the Attorney General and local officials to bring the U.S. territory into compliance. Attorney General Edward Manibusan issued a memorandum on June 30 confirming that the territory was bound by the court decision and said that marriage license forms would be changed to include same-sex couples.

The 2022 Northern Mariana gubernatorial election took place on November 8,2022 to elect the governor of the Northern Mariana Islands and the lieutenant governor of the Northern Mariana Islands to a four-year term in office. Because no candidate received 50% of the vote in the general election,the two highest-placing candidates advanced to a runoff election on November 25,2022.
General elections were held in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) on 3 November 2001,electing the governor and members to the legislature. The 2001 elections marked the last general election that the dissolved Reform Party,which merged back into the Democratic Party in 2002,would appear on the ballot. Despite the economic hardships experienced under Pedro Pangelinan Tenorio's Administration,the apparent strength the 1999 general elections signaled that the Democratic Party and its splinter Reform Party had,and the newly formed Covenant Party which was formed as a splinter party from the ruling Republican Party,Republican candidate Juan Nekai Babauta won with a landslide in the four-way race. Benigno Repeki Fitial's newly formed Covenant Party landed a distant yet sizable second place. Jesus Borja of the Democratic Party won a distant third and Froilan Tenorio of the Reform Party placed fourth.
