The effects of Hurricane Sandy in Canada included rainfall and high waves across much of eastern Canada.
The Canadian Hurricane Centre issued its first preliminary statement on Hurricane Sandy on October 25. The statement was aimed at all of Eastern Canada from Southern Ontario to the Canadian Maritimes. [1] Forecasters predicted that Sandy would bring rain to Ontario and Quebec,possibly turning to snow in Central Ontario. [2]
On October 29,Environment Canada issued severe wind warnings for the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Valley corridor,from Southwestern Ontario as far as Quebec City. [3] Environment Canada also predicted that Hurricane Sandy could bring "significant" snow to parts of Central and Northern Ontario. [4]
Additional warnings were issued by the Canadian Red Cross,Emergency Management Ontario,and numerous Conservation Authorities,which warned residents in Ontario to be prepared for flooding and power outages in the wake of the storm. [5]
On October 30,Environment Canada issued storm surge warnings along the mouth of the St. Lawrence River,including the GaspéPeninsula and Sept-Îles. [6] Rainfall warnings were issued for the Charlevoix region in Quebec,as well as for Charlotte County,New Brunswick,Yarmouth County,Shelburne County,and Queens County in Nova Scotia,as 50 to 70 millimetres of rain can be expected. [7] [8] [9] Freezing rain warnings were issued for parts of Northern Ontario. [10] [11]
On October 31,rainfall warnings were posted for all counties of New Brunswick that are not adjacent to Maine,including the cities of Saint John and Moncton,as well as Halifax and central Nova Scotia. [12] [13] Environment Canada also issued a wind warning for the Northern Quebec community of Umiujaq. [14]
On November 1,as the remnants of Sandy marched towards Northern Canada,a wreckhouse wind warning was posted for Channel-Port aux Basques,Newfoundland and Labrador,while blizzard warnings were issued for extreme northwestern Quebec communities such as Salluit and Ivujivik. [15] [16] Snowfall warnings were also posted for the communities of southern Baffin Island in Nunavut such as Kimmirut,Pangnirtung and Iqaluit. [17]
As of early October 30,most of Southern Ontario was experiencing sustained winds of tropical storm force from Windsor to Ottawa,with gusts to 80 km/h (50 mph) or higher. One woman was killed after being struck by a piece of flying debris,a Staples Inc. sign,in the Junction neighbourhood in the west end of Toronto. [18] [19] The strongest ground-level winds were along Lake Huron and Georgian Bay,where gusts were measured at 105 km/h (65 mph). A 121 km/h (75 mph) gust was measured on top of the Bluewater Bridge. At least 145,000 customers across the province had lost power as of the morning of October 30. [21] Streetcar wires along several routes were torn down in Toronto. [22] Hundreds of flights from Toronto Pearson International Airport,Ottawa Macdonald–Cartier International Airport,and Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (Toronto Island) had also been cancelled,mostly destined for Atlantic Canada and the eastern seaboard of the United States. [23] A Bluewater Power worker was electrocuted in Sarnia while working to restore power. [24]
Around 49,000 homes and businesses lost power in Quebec during the storm,with nearly 40,000 of those in the Laurentides region of the province,as well as more than 4,000 customers in the Eastern Townships and 1,700 customers in Montreal. Over 150 flights had been cancelled at Montreal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport. [25]
The Emerald Princess ,a cruise ship carrying 3,780 passengers and 1,200 crew members,sought shelter at Saguenay,Quebec,which was just north of Sandy's northern edge and has a naturally protected harbour. It is the largest ship ever to have docked at Saguenay. [26]
Around 14,000 customers in Nova Scotia lost power during the height of the storm. [27]
An F0 tornado was also reported in Mont-Laurier,Quebec on October 31 with minimal damage,one of the latest tornadoes in the year ever recorded in Canada and one of very few to be linked to a tropical cyclone (or the remnants thereof). [28]

Hurricane Juan was a significant tropical cyclone which caused extensive damage to parts of Atlantic Canada,being the tenth named storm and the sixth hurricane of the 2003 Atlantic hurricane season. Juan formed southeast of Bermuda on September 24 from a tropical wave that had tracked across the subtropical Atlantic Ocean. It tracked northward and strengthened over the warm waters of the Gulf Stream,reaching Category 2 strength on the Saffir-Simpson hurricane scale on September 27. The hurricane peaked in intensity with sustained winds of 105 mph (169 km/h) that same day,losing some strength as it raced over cooler waters toward the coast of Nova Scotia,before making landfall between Shad Bay and Prospect in the Halifax Regional Municipality early on September 29 as a Category 2 hurricane with winds of 100 mph (160 km/h). Juan retained hurricane strength while travelling through Nova Scotia,though it would weaken into a Category 1 hurricane over Prince Edward Island. Juan would eventually be absorbed by another extratropical low on September 29 near Anticosti Island in the northern Gulf of Saint Lawrence.
The Early December 2007 North American winter storm was a major winter storm which affected the majority of the United States and portions of southern Canada from November 29 to December 5,hitting the Intermountain West and Midwestern United States,the Great Lakes region and the Northeast. The storm brought significant snows to portions of the Upper Midwest,Great Plains and Great Lakes regions of the United States and Canada on December 1 with a major winter storm for Quebec,Ontario and parts of the Northeast region on December 2 and 3 as well as the Canadian Maritimes on December 4 and 5. The system was also responsible for a major ice storm across the Midwestern states which caused disruptions to several major cities including Des Moines,Chicago,Detroit,Milwaukee and Toronto. The storm was blamed for at least 16 deaths across nine US states and one Canadian province. 10 traffic deaths had been reported,as of 2 December 2007.
The Mid-December 2007 North American winter storms were a series of two winter storms that affected much of central and eastern North America,from December 8 to December 18,2007. The systems affected areas from Oklahoma to Newfoundland and Labrador with freezing rain,thunderstorms,sleet,snow,damaging winds,and blizzard-like conditions in various areas. The first two storms produced copious amounts of ice across the Midwestern United States and Great Plains from December 8 to December 11,knocking out power to approximately 1.5 million customers from Oklahoma north to Iowa. The second storm moved northeast,producing heavy snow across New York and New England. A third storm was responsible for a major winter storm from Kansas to the Canadian Maritimes,bringing locally record-breaking snowfalls to Ontario,an icestorm across the Appalachians,and thunderstorms and 9 tornadoes to the Southeastern United States.
The North American blizzard of 2008 was a winter storm that struck most of southern and eastern North America from March 6 to March 10,2008. The storm was most notable for a major winter storm event from Arkansas to Quebec. It also produced severe weather across the east coast of the United States with heavy rain,damaging winds and tornadoes,causing locally significant damage. The hardest hit areas by the wintry weather were from the Ohio Valley to southern Quebec where up to a half a meter of snow fell locally including the major cities of Columbus,Ohio,Cleveland,Ohio,and Ottawa,Ontario. For many areas across portions of the central United States,Ontario and Quebec,it was the worst winter storm in the past several years. The blizzard and its aftermath caused at least 17 deaths across four US states and three Canadian provinces,while hundreds others were injured mostly in weather-related accidents and tornadoes.

In March 2012,one of the greatest heat waves was observed in many regions of North America. Very warm air pushed northward west of the Great Lakes region,and subsequently spread eastward. The intense poleward air mass movement was propelled by an unusually intense low level southerly jet that stretched from Louisiana to western Wisconsin. Once this warm surge inundated the area,a remarkably prolonged period of record setting temperatures ensued.
Hurricane Sandy was an extremely large and destructive Category 3 Atlantic hurricane which ravaged the Caribbean and the coastal Mid-Atlantic region of the United States in late October 2012. It was the largest Atlantic hurricane on record as measured by diameter,with tropical-storm-force winds spanning 1,150 miles (1,850 km). The storm inflicted nearly $70 billion in damage,and killed 233 people in eight countries,from the Caribbean to Canada. The eighteenth named storm,tenth hurricane,and second major hurricane of the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season,Sandy was a Category 3 storm at its peak intensity when it made landfall in Cuba,though most of the damage it caused was after it became a Category 1-equivalent extratropical cyclone off the coast of the Northeastern United States.
The February 2013 North American blizzard,also known as Winter Storm Nemo and the Blizzard of 2013,was a powerful blizzard that developed from the combination of two areas of low pressure,primarily affecting the Northeastern United States and parts of Canada,causing heavy snowfall and hurricane-force winds. The storm crossed the Atlantic Ocean,affecting Ireland and the United Kingdom. The nor'easter's effects in the United States received a Category 3 rank on the Northeast Snowfall Impact Scale,classifying it as a "Major" Winter Storm.
Nova Scotia lies in the mid-temperate zone,and although the province is almost surrounded by water,the climate is closer to continental climate rather than maritime climate. The temperature extremes of the continental climate are moderated by the ocean.
The December 2013 North American storm complex was a significant storm complex that included many different types of severe weather,including a winter storm,a severe ice storm and a tornado outbreak that impacted the central and eastern portions of Canada,parts of the Central Great Plains,the Southern United States,and the northeastern United States from 20 to 23 December 2013. Formed in the South Central United States,the storm headed across the Great Plains towards Canada into Atlantic Canada and northeastern United States where the storm dissipated on 23 December 2013. The storm produced freezing rain and snow to the affected areas which caused massive damage to electric power transmission and trees. The storm resulted in 29 deaths,loss of power to over a million residents and over $200 million in damages. The storm produced similar conditions to the ice storm of 1998 which affected similar areas.
Hurricane Arthur was the earliest known hurricane to make landfall in the U.S. state of North Carolina during the calendar year. It was also the first hurricane to make landfall in the United States since Hurricane Isaac in 2012. The first named storm of the 2014 Atlantic hurricane season,Arthur developed from an initially non-tropical area of low-pressure over the Southeastern United States that emerged into the western Atlantic Ocean on June 28. After sufficiently organizing,developing a well-defined circulation and deep convection amid a favorable environment,it was classified as a tropical depression on July 1. The system continued to strengthen and was declared a tropical storm later that day. Drifting northward,the storm reached hurricane status early on July 3 and curved toward the north-northeast. Further structural organization resulted in additional intensification,and by 01:00 UTC on July 4,the system attained its peak winds of 100 mph (160 km/h) as a Category 2 hurricane on the Saffir–Simpson hurricane wind scale. Arthur made landfall at 03:15 UTC over North Carolina's Shackleford Banks,positioned between Cape Lookout and Beaufort,and intensified slightly further,with a minimum atmospheric pressure of 973 mbar. The storm then trekked swiftly northeast,weakening as it passed by Cape Cod and Nantucket,before transitioning into an extratropical cyclone and coming ashore at Weymouth,Nova Scotia,on July 5. The remnants continued generally northeastward through Atlantic Canada before ultimately dissipating on July 9 over the Labrador Sea.

The May 2022 Canadian derecho was a high-impact derecho event that affected the Quebec City-Windsor Corridor,Canada's most densely populated region,on May 21,2022. Described by meteorologists as a historic derecho and one of the most impactful thunderstorms in Canadian history,winds up to 190 km/h (120 mph) as well as around four tornadoes caused widespread and extensive damage along a path that extended for 1,000 kilometres (620 mi).
