MTV's Exposed is a television dating show which ran on MTV. It debuted on January 1, 2007, and was produced by Kallissa Productions and Endemol USA, as a "successor" to the dating show Next . [1] [2] The show ended by 2008. [3]

Dating game shows are television game shows that incorporate a dating system in the form of a game with clear rules. Human matchmaking is involved only in selecting the game's contestants, who are usually selected more for the amusement value than any concern for their happiness or compatibility. The audience sees only the game; an important feature of all dating game shows is that the contestants have little or no previous knowledge of each other, and are exposed to each other only through the game, which may include viewing a photograph or at least knowing the basic criteria for participation.

MTV American pay television channel

MTV is an American pay television channel that serves as the flagship property of owner Viacom Media Networks and headquartered in New York City. The channel was launched on August 1, 1981, and originally aired music videos as guided by television personalities known as "video jockeys" (VJs). At first, MTV's main target demographic was young adults, but today it is primarily teenagers, particularly high school and college students.

Endemol was a Dutch-based media company that produced and distributed multiplatform entertainment content. The company annually produced more than 15,000 hours of programming across scripted and non-scripted genres, including drama, reality TV, comedy, game shows, entertainment, factual and children's programming.

Description

The premise of the show revolved around lie detection software. The initial dater and a friend introduce themselves, and the friend sits in a recreational vehicle (RV) where they can monitor the date. The date consists of the initial dater simultaneously asking questions of two potential mates, followed by a few individual questions to each of them during the "hot seat" portion of the date.

Lie detection is an assessment of a verbal statement with the goal to reveal a possible intentional deceit. Lie detection may refer to a cognitive process of detecting deception by evaluating message content as well as non-verbal cues. It also may refer to questioning techniques used along with technology that record physiological functions to ascertain truth and falsehood in response. The latter is commonly used by law enforcement in the United States, but rarely in other countries because it is based on pseudoscience. There are a wide variety of technologies available for this purpose. The most common and long used measure is the polygraph, which the U.S. National Academy of Sciences states, in populations untrained in countermeasures, can discriminate lying from truth telling at rates above chance, though below perfection. They added that the results apply only to specific events and not to screening, where it is assumed that the polygraph works less well.

Everything said by the daters is run through lie detection software. Through an earpiece, the friend in the RV tells the dater if what one says is a lie or the truth. At the end of the date, the dater reveals that the statements made during the date have been run through lie detection software, usually to shocked reactions from the two contestants. Next, the dater asks the two contestants if there is anything they would like to 'come clean' about, giving them a last chance to reveal a lie. Commonly, both daters don't respond to this, though they know they have (usually) both lied.

Then, the dater goes back to the RV to consult with their friend and decide which of the two competitors to pick. The dater then returns and confronts the two daters, exposing one (or multiple, occasionally) of their most notable lies, before revealing which one they chose.

At the end of each episode, a disclaimer is shown that reads "The Voice Stress Analyzer is used for entertainment purposes only. It is not operated by a trained professional or under conditions that would provide a reliable means of lie detection. No representations are made regarding the accuracy of any results." [3] Some believed the show to be fake, as contestants from the dating show "Next" also appeared on Exposed.[ citation needed ]

Reception

The show did not attain critical acclaim, with one early review calling it an "abomination." [4]

Notable appearances

The fourth season of Love Games: Bad Girls Need Love Too premiered on November 5, 2012, and ran for nine episodes. It is hosted by Bad Girls Club alumni Tanisha Thomas, and is also the first season to feature girls from the same season and to feature a replacement as a cast member.

Then, while living together, the contestants try to identify all of these "perfect matches." If they succeed, the entire group shares a prize of up to $1 million. Over the course of each season, the contestants have the opportunity to pair up in different combinations to compete against each other to win dates, as well as the opportunity to learn in the "truth booth" if a given couple is a correct match. At the end of each episode, the contestants pair up in a "matching ceremony" and learn how many perfect matches they have, but not which matches are correct. From season 3 onward, the prize was reduced any time that the house failed to identify any matches other than those already confirmed via the truth booth.
