Fiber to the premises (FTTP) in the United States is provided on a limited geographical basis by Google Fiber, Verizon, Lightower, and a number of smaller Internet Service Providers.

Several carriers, municipalities, and planned communities across America are deploying their own fiber networks. Open Access Networks differ from incumbent models by being horizontally integrated, which allows for multiple service providers to operate on one network and promotes market competition. Among them is the City of Burlington, Vermont "Burlington Telecom" and Lafayette, Louisiana.

The city of San Francisco, California has released a feasibility study for government and public broadband via fiber optics. This was the result of San Francisco supervisors' vote to adopt a resolution to encourage certain city departments to consider installing FTTP for use primarily in city operations. This then evolved into the fiber feasibility study which also includes "services to businesses and residents." The study estimated build-out costs of $564 million. It has been released as a draft in order for members of the public to provide comments and input.

Service providers using Active FTTP technologies include YRT2 Inc.; [31] PAXIO Inc.; [32] SureWest; iProvo; Grant County, Washington; UTOPIA; CDE Lighband, Clarksville, TN and Broadweave Networks. [33] Service providers using passive optical networks include Verizon (FiOS), AT&T (U-verse), and several greenfield development networks.

There is also another FTTH provider UTOPIA, based in Salt Lake County, Utah, which currently services 11 cities. This municipal fiber network is an open network to many local ISPs, including Xmission, Sumo, and Veracity, and other service providers who have bought onto the network. The speeds of the network range around 100 Mbit/s to 1 Gbit/s [34] for residential use and 20 Mbit/s to 10 Gbit/s for business use.

EPB Fiber Optics provides a GPON network that offers fiber to the premise to Chattanooga, TN and some neighboring cities. They offer 1Gig internet service, which is the fastest speed available in the nation, as well as TV and phone service.

In 2008, Greenlight was introduced in Wilson, North Carolina, which created the system at a cost of $28 million. [35] The reason was the lack of interest in fiber optic from private companies. [36]

With job losses, a major problem in Salisbury, North Carolina, the concept of municipal broadband was studied beginning in 2005. City council members looked at Wilson's system as an example of what Salisbury could do to help the economy. Also, Internet access in the city was slow. [37]

Municipal power provider, CDE Lightband in Clarksville, TN launched their 1 Gig service in 2013 via an active FTTP plant. They also offer digital television and phone services. [38]

State laws and litigation

Fibrant in Salisbury, North Carolina was one of 60 municipal networks located across the country. The city borrowed $30 million to install the service, which offered faster Internet speeds at a lower price than competitors. The North Carolina General Assembly was considering legislation to stop such networks, which private companies opposed as the municipal utilities did not have to pay taxes and did not have the ability to subsidize. [39]

On February 26, 2015, the FCC voted on a petition by Chattanooga, Tennessee and Wilson, North Carolina asking for "federal preemption of state laws". States opposed this effort to increase competition. South Carolina had a law which prevented governments from benefiting in ways private sector services could not. A service provided by Monticello, Minnesota had failed and bondholders sued, leading to concerns about who would pay if similar situations occurred as a result of the FCC action. After the FCC vote, U.S. Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina and Rep. Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee introduced bills to stop the action. [40] [41] On February 1, 2016, FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler recommended that the commission act on the petition. If the vote went in the cities' favor, the state laws would no longer be in effect and municipal systems could expand outside the cities. [42]

After Tennessee and North Carolina appealed, on August 10, 2016, the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the Telecommunications Act of 1996 did not necessarily give the FCC the right to prevent states from prohibiting municipal broadband. [43]

iProvo is the name of the fiber to the home service in Provo, Utah. Provo's backbone connects homes and businesses throughout the city, as well as municipal buildings, schools, power stations, and traffic signals. Construction began in July 2004 and was completed within two years. With the exception of new subdivisions not included in the original build out contract, the fiber optic backbone is available in all areas of the city. The network's fiber optic equipment is manufactured by World Wide Packets.

nTelos

nTelos, Inc. was a wireless telecommunications company and PCS provider based in Waynesboro, Virginia. As of 2013, nTelos' service area covered 5.3 million people making it the 9th largest provider of mobile broadband in the United States.

Fiber to the <i>x</i> Broadband network architecture term

Fiber to the x or fiber in the loop is a generic term for any broadband network architecture using optical fiber to provide all or part of the local loop used for last mile telecommunications. As fiber optic cables are able to carry much more data than copper cables, especially over long distances, copper telephone networks built in the 20th century are being replaced by fiber.

Municipal broadband is broadband Internet access offered by public entities. Services are often provided either fully or partially by local governments to residents within certain areas or jurisdictions. Common connection technologies include unlicensed wireless, licensed wireless, and fiber-optic cable. Many cities that previously deployed Wi-Fi based solutions, like Comcast and Charter Spectrum, are switching to municipal broadband. Municipal fiber-to-the-home networks are becoming more prominent because of increased demand for modern audio and video applications, which are increasing bandwidth requirements by 40% per year. The purpose of municipal broadband is to provide internet access to those who cannot afford internet from internet service providers and local governments are increasingly investing in said services for their communities.

Google Fiber, sometimes stylized as GFiber, is a fiber broadband Internet and IPTV service operated by Google Fiber Inc., a subsidiary of Alphabet, servicing a small and slowly increasing number of locations in the United States. In mid-2016, Google Fiber had 68,715 television subscribers and was estimated to have about 453,000 broadband customers.

EPB of Chattanooga, formerly known as the Electric Power Board of Chattanooga, is an American electric power distribution and telecommunications company owned by the city of Chattanooga, Tennessee. EPB serves nearly 180,000 homes and businesses in a 600-square mile area in the greater Chattanooga area and Hamilton County. In 2010, EPB was the first company in the United States to offer 1 Gbit/s high-speed internet over a fiber optic network, over 200 times faster than the national average. As a result, Chattanooga has been called "Gig City" and held up as a national model for deploying the world's fastest internet and the most advanced Smart Grid electric distribution system in the United States. On October 15, 2015, Chattanooga implemented the world's first community-wide 10-gig Internet service.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Ting Inc.</span> Wireless service company

Ting Inc. is an American internet service provider founded by Tucows in 2012. It originally consisted of Ting Mobile, a mobile virtual network operator, and Ting Internet, an internet service provider that offered gigabit fiber Internet. In August 2020, Ting Mobile was sold to Dish Wireless. Today, Tucows continues to provide the enablement software for Ting Mobile and continues to operate Ting Internet independently.

Gigabit Seattle was a fiber-to-the-home / fiber-to-the-business network planned to be deployed in Seattle, Washington. The network comes out of a partnership between the City of Seattle, the University of Washington and digital economic development company Gigabit Squared to deploy a next generation network in the City. The project is the second city project announced by Gigabit Squared as part of its Gigabit Neighborhood Gateway Program, after Gigabit Chicago.

Exascale is a British fibre-to-the-building Internet service provider with a Head Office in Telford, Shropshire with presence in a number of data centres and markets throughout the United Kingdom. Exascale is most commonly known to provide high speed internet and point-to-point connectivity to businsses using a variety of access technologies nationally across the United Kingdom.

CityFibre is an independent British telecommunications network provider, providing gigabit-capable FTTP broadband across the UK. It is the third-largest network provider in the UK, after Openreach and Virgin Media. It is considered one of the UK's "altnets", in reference to being an alternative to Openreach.
