The Golden South was a clipper ship built in 1852, as Flying Childers. [1]

Built by Samuel Hall of East Boston, Massachusetts for J.M. Forbes and Cunningham Brothers, Boston. She sailed between Boston to San Francisco and Whampoa to Deal. She was sold in 1858 for $53,000. She then sailed from New York to San Francisco and Boston to San Francisco. Sold in 1863 to Mackay, Baines & Company, Liverpool for £5050 and renamed Golden South, for the Liverpool to Australia trade.

She was sold in 1866 and later used as a coal hulk at Port Jackson, Sydney.

Fate

On Monday 29 May 1893, awaiting breaking up, she was destroyed by fire after the hulk Vernon caught ablaze in Kerosene Bay, Sydney. [2] [3]

Norjerv was a 5,583 GRT cargo ship that was built in 1919 as West Islip by Ames Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Co, Seattle, Washington, United States for the United States Shipping Board (USSB). In 1928, she was sold and renamed Golden Rod. A further sale in 1935 saw her renamed Willhilo. She was renamed Indianan after a sale in 1937. In 1940, she was transferred to the Ministry of Supply (MoS) and renamed Empire Eagle, passing later that year to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT). In 1942, she was transferred to the Norwegian Government and renamed Norjerv, serving until June 1944 when she was transferred to the British Government. Donald McKay, named after her designer, was built for James Baines & Co. She was the last extreme clipper ship built by Donald McKay. Donald McKay sailed on the Black Ball Line of Liverpool from 1855 to 1868, carrying passengers and mail between England and Australia.

Caleb Curtis Boston and San Francisco 19th-century pilot boat

The Caleb Curtis was a 19th-century two-masted Boston pilot boat, built in 1859 at Chelsea, Massachusetts for Boston maritime pilots. She well known for her speed. the Curtis was sold to the San Francisco Pilots' Opposition Line in October 1861 and sailed from Boston around Cape Horn and then to San Francisco to become a pilot boat with the San Francisco fleet. She was shipwrecked inside the Bonita Channel in 1867. The Caleb Curtis was repaired, and was able to continue as a pilot boat in San Francisco from 1867 to 1892. She was sold at auction 1892. From 1892 to 1899, she had different owners and sailed the waters of Japan, Socorro Island, Clipperton Island and Tahiti, Hong Kong and Klondike, Yukon. She was shipwrecked at Cape Nome, Alaska in 1899.

<i>George Peabody</i> (pilot boat) Boston Pilot boat

George Peabody was a 19th-century pilot boat built in Boston, Massachusetts in 1867, for San Francisco pilots. She was in the San Francisco pilot service for twenty-seven years. The Peabody was sold in 1893 to Captain Samuel H. Burtis and sailed to Yokohama, Japan for fishing and Seal hunting. In March 1895, she went ashore off the coast of Japan while working in the sealing trade.
