Hendreddu quarry was a slate quarry about three miles west of Aberangell in Merioneth (now Gwynedd), North Wales, near Nant Hendreddu on the slopes of Mynydd Hendre-ddu. The quarry worked the Narrow Vein, the highest-quality slate vein in the Abercorris Group. For the majority of the quarry's existence, the Hendre Ddu Tramway was owned by the same company that owned the quarry, and the two were run as a single enterprise.
In 1856, a "take note" (permission to explore for minerals) was granted by Sir Edmund Buckley to search for slate on Mynydd Hendre-ddu. It was taken by David Hughes of Pen Pentre, Aberangell. Hughes developed at least one open pit where the narrow vein reached the surface. [1]
Hughes' exploration proved there was high-quality slate near Nant Hendreddu. In 1864, Buckley took over the nascent quarry and began more serious work. In August 1868, the Hendreddu Slate Quarry Company was formed, managed by Edward Davies from Minllyn quarry. [2] In 1870, a long incline was laid from the pit level down to the bottom of Hendreddu Valley, and in 1872, work started on a long tunnel from the bottom of the incline northwest to meet the vein underground. The tunnel was completed in April 1873, and mining of the slate began. [1]
A substantial mill was built east of the adit and equipped with machinery dragged from Aberangell station. A terrace of cottages was built for married quarrymen, and a barracks at the quarry was for single men. A narrow-gauge tramway was built in 1874 to allow the transportation of slabs from the quarry to Aberangell. [1]
In 1876, Buckley was declared bankrupt and forced to sell most of his estate, including the tramway and quarry, which were purchased by Dennis Bradwell. Bradwell was the mayor of Congleton and the owner of a silk mill at Leek. He was joined by his younger brother Jacob, who took over the running of the quarry. There was significant industrial conflict between the Bradwells and the workers during the 1880s. Jacob remained in charge of the quarry until his death in 1908. [1]
Edward Hurst Davies purchased the quarry after the death of Jacob Bradwell. Davies had been the second manager at Hendreddu, before joining nearby Gartheiniog quarry. He co-founded Maesygamfa quarry with Frederick Walton in 1886. Davies reopened Hendreddu quarry in 1914, shortly after Maesygamfa had closed. He continued limited slab production until 1916, then closed it once more. After the war, Davies sold the quarry and tramway to William Clayton Russon. [1]
After the war, Davies sold the quarry to National Welsh Slate Quarries Ltd. (NWSQ), a new company founded by Charles Fitzherbert Bill, the son of Charles Bill. The company purchased the quarry and tramway from Russon in 1919. They raised more than £90,000 (equivalent to £4,400,129in 2021) through the sale of stock and refurbished the quarry.
Production restarted in 1920, but NWSQs was a fraudulent scheme and closed down at the end of 1921. [1]
The quarry continued operating after the failure of NWSQ. In 1922, C.F. Bill and William Bowley formed a new company, Hendre-ddu Slate Quarries Ltd., to take over the quarry from the receiver. The new company specialised in slabs for electrical installations.
There was a large collapse of several underground chambers in 1925, but work continued in the remaining chambers. In 1927, the company was reorganized, Bill left, and Bowley became chairman. The Great Depression caused a drop in demand for slate, and the quarry closed in 1932. [1]
The quarry remained closed until it was purchased by T. Glyn Williams in 1937. Born in 1913, Williams was the son of T.O Williams who had been the manager at several local quarries including Braichgoch, Abercorris, Aberllefenni and Wrysgan. T. Glyn reopened the quarry with limited success. At the outbreak of the Second World War the workforce was reduced as men joined the military. Williams closed the quarry in 1941. [1]
Aberllefenni quarry is the collective name of three slate quarries, Foel Grochan, Hen Gloddfa and Ceunant Ddu, located in Cwm Hengae, just to the west of Aberllefenni, Gwynedd, North Wales. It was the longest continually operated slate mine in the world until its closure in 2003. Foel Grochan is the quarry on the north side of the valley, facing Ceunant Ddu and Hen Gloddfa on the south; all three were worked as a single concern throughout their history. Rock was mainly extracted underground, though all three quarries had open pits as well.

The Hendre-Ddu Tramway was a 1 ft 11 in narrow gauge industrial railway built in 1874 in Mid-Wales to connect the Hendre-Ddu slate quarry to Aberangell station on the Mawddwy Railway. It consisted of a main line 3+1⁄2 miles (5.6 km) long and several branch lines and spurs serving other quarries, local farms and the timber industry.
The Abercorris quarry was a slate quarry worked between the mid-1840s and the early 1950s. It was located at Corris Uchaf about 5 miles north of Machynlleth, in Gwynedd, north-west Wales. The quarry was connected to the Corris Railway via the Upper Corris Tramway which carried its products to the Cambrian Railways at Machynlleth for distribution. It worked the Narrow Vein.
Dinorwic quarry is a large former slate quarry, now home to the Welsh National Slate Museum, located between the villages of Llanberis and Dinorwig in Wales. At its height at the start of the 20th century, it was the second largest slate quarry in Wales, after the neighbouring Penrhyn quarry near Bethesda. Dinorwic covered 700 acres (283 ha) consisting of two main quarry sections with 20 galleries in each. Extensive internal tramway systems connected the quarries using inclines to transport slate between galleries. Since its closure in 1969, the quarry has become the site of the National Slate Museum, a regular film location, and an extreme rock climbing destination.
The Mawddwy Railway was a rural line in the Dyfi Valley in mid-Wales that connected Dinas Mawddwy with a junction at Cemmaes Road railway station on the Newtown and Machynlleth Railway section of the Cambrian Railways.
The Cwt y Bugail quarry is a former slate quarry located east of Blaenau Ffestiniog in Wales. It was first worked as a trial pit around 1840. Continuous production began in 1863 and continued until closure in 1961. The quarry was connected to the Ffestiniog Railway at Duffws Station via the Rhiwbach Tramway.
Aberangell railway station was an intermediate railway station on the Mawddwy Railway which ran from Cemmaes Road to Dinas Mawddy in the Welsh county of Merionethshire. The station was opened by the Mawddwy Railway in 1867 and closed to all goods traffic in 1908. The railway re-opened in 1911 with all services run by the Cambrian Railways. It was amalgamated into the Great Western Railway in 1923 as part of the grouping of British railways, and remained open to passenger and freight traffic until 1931 and 1952, respectively. The station was the transshipment point between the branch and the Hendre Ddu Tramway.

Conglog quarry was a small enterprise situated to the north-west of Tanygrisiau, near Blaenau Ffestiniog in Wales. It was overshadowed by the much bigger Rhosydd quarry a little further to the west. It was active from 1854 to 1910, and was operated by an individual, two partnerships and four separate companies over this period.
Graig Ddu quarry is a disused slate quarry near Blaenau Ffestiniog, in Gwynedd, North Wales. Although output was only about 3,000 tons a year, it reputedly has 36 saw tables and the same number of dressing machines on site. As with others in the area, the quarry suffered from a lack of water, resulting in the siting of the mill some distance away, at a lower level.

Mynydd Hendre-ddu or Mynydd Hendreddu is a mountain in southern Snowdonia, Wales. It is one of a line of mountains running from Mynydd Dolgoed in the north, through Mynydd Llwydiarth to Mynydd Hendre-ddu and on to Mynydd y Foel, Y Grug, Mynydd Tri-Arglwyd and Mynydd Gwyn to the south of the village of Aberangell. It forms the watershed between Nant Llwydiarth, which flows to the south-west and into the Afon Dulas, and streams flowing into Afon Angell to the north, which flow east into the River Dyfi.
Gartheiniog quarry was a slate quarry served by the Hendre Ddu Tramway. It is located about a mile west of Aberangell in Merioneth, North Wales near the confluence of the Nant Maesygamfa and the Afon Angell. It worked the Narrow Vein, the highest-quality slate vein in the Abercorris Group.
The Narrow Vein Mudstone Formation is an Ordovician lithostratigraphic group in Mid Wales. The rock of the formation is silty, homogeneous or finely-laminated mudstone. It generally a medium blue colour. This formation has been commercially quarried as slate in several locations along its length. The formation is between 400 metres (1,300 ft) and 560 metres (1,840 ft) thick and runs from Dinas Mawddwy south-west to Cardigan Bay at Tywyn.
The Cwm Ebol quarry was a slate quarry about 1 mile (1.6 km) north west of the village of Pennal in Mid Wales. It operated from about 1860 to about 1906. It was the last Welsh slate quarry connected only to a trans-shipment point instead of directly to a railway.
Dennis Bradwell, was a British businessman who was mayor of Congleton in the 1870s. He owned silk mills in Cheshire and Staffordshire and a slate quarry in Mid Wales.
