Delhi, a major metropolitan region of India, is connected to various parts of country through several national highways and expressways. All the highways and expressways from Delhi lead to Haryana or Uttar Pradesh and continue from there.
Delhi is directly connected to the state of Haryana by the Delhi–Gurgaon Expressway (part of National Highway 48) to the city of Gurgaon, National Highway 44 to the city of Sonipat, Delhi–Faridabad Skyway (part of National Highway 44) to the city of Faridabad, and National Highway 9 to the city of Bahadurgarh.
Delhi is directly connected to the state of Uttar Pradesh by the DND Flyway to the city of Noida and Delhi–Meerut Expressway (part of National Highway 9) to the city of Ghaziabad.
Delhi–Gurgaon Expressway is a 28 km long access-controlled toll expressway connecting Delhi, the national capital of India, and Gurgaon on NH48. The highway runs from Delhi to Mumbai wherein the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway runs till outskirts of Gurgaon. The expressway is a part of Golden Quadrilateral project, which itself is a part of ambitious National Highway Development Project and emphasizes improving road connectivity between four metropolitan cities of India, namely Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata by developing 4–6 lane highways between them.
The much-delayed Rs.10 billion, 27.7 km expressway opened 23 January 2008. It has helped reduce the travel time for hundreds of thousands of commuters and international air passengers. Vehicle users have to pay a toll for using the expressway, which is collected at three points, near the Indira Gandhi International Airport, the Delhi-Gurgaon Border and the 42nd milestone. Since it began operation, it has also achieved notoriety for a large number of accidents involving pedestrians. There are only two over-bridges along the entire stretch to cater to the communities living on either side of heavily populated areas through which the expressway runs. The toll plaza at the Delhi-Gurgaon border has also proved inadequate to handle the increasing traffic, leading to traffic jams during peak hours. Though the plaza is tag enabled, only 40 percent of the traffic that passes through avails of this facility. [1]
Delhi–Noida Direct Flyway or DND Flyway is an 8-lane access controlled tolled expressway which connects Delhi to Noida, an industrial suburb area. It was built and is maintained by The Noida Toll Bridge Company Ltd. The project, built by the Noida Toll Bridge Company Ltd. was developed under a Build-Own-Operate-Transfer model. The Noida Toll Bridge Company promoted by the Infrastructure Leasing and Financial Services (IL&FS). The project included the construction of a flyover at Ashram Chowk and the construction of a 552.5 meter bridge over the Yamuna river. [2] [3]
The NH 44 or Delhi–Faridabad skyway is a flyover that connects Badarpur in Delhi to Sector-37 in Faridabad on Mathura Road (old NH-2). The toll plaza (border) through which thousands of passengers go to their destinations is called Badarpur border because the nearest area of Delhi which is near to the toll plaza is Badarpur. The Toll is collected by South MCD of Delhi.
Delhi–Meerut Expressway or National Expressway 3 is India's widest 96 km long controlled-access expressway, connecting Delhi with Meerut via Dasna in Ghaziabad in India.
Delhi–Mumbai Expressway is a 1,350 km long 8-lane wide expressway connecting DND Flyway in Delhi with JLN Port in Mumbai. It is expected to be completed by March 2023.
Dwarka Expressway is a 27.6 km long, 8-lane wide expressway connecting Mahipalpur in Delhi to Gurgaon in Haryana.

National Highway 1 or (NH 1) is a National Highway in Northern India that links the National capital New Delhi to the town of Attari in Punjab near the Indo-Pakistani border. The highway is maintained by National Highways Authority of India. [4] The highway originally started from Lahore in Pakistan. This is one of the longest and oldest highways of India.
The present day NH 1 passes through Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Ambala, Kurukshetra, Karnal, Panipat, Sonipat and Delhi. It runs for a distance of 456 km. The Delhi–Lahore Bus travels on NH 1 in India. NH 1 presently has 4 different spur routes designated as 1A, 1B, 1C and 1D. Approximately 380 km stretch of NH 1 from Jalandhar to Delhi is a part of the North-South Corridor. [5]
National Highway 2 (NH 2), commonly referred as Delhi-Kolkata Road is a busy Indian National Highway that runs through the states of Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal. It constitute a major portion of historical Grand Trunk Road along with NH 91 and NH 1 in India. The road is the part of National Highway network of India, and it is officially listed as running over 1465 km from Delhi to (Dankuni) Kolkata. The km in each of the states are Delhi (12), Haryana (74), Uttar Pradesh (752), Bihar (202), Jharkhand (190), West Bengal (235).
The highway touches the cities of Faridabad & Palwal in Haryana, Mathura, Agra, Etawah, Kanpur, Allahabad, Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, Mohania & Sasaram in Bihar, Barhi, Dhanbad in Jharkhand and Asansol, Durgapur, Kolkata in West Bengal.
Almost all of the 1465 km stretch of NH 2 has been selected as a part of the Golden Quadrilateral by the National Highways Development Project. [5] Approximately 253 km stretch of NH 2 between Delhi and Agra has been selected as a part of the North-South Corridor by the National Highways Development Project. National Highway 8 (NH 8), is a National Highway in India that connects the Indian capital city of New Delhi with the Indian Financial capital city of Mumbai. The highway passes through the State capitals of Gandhinagar and Jaipur, as well as important cities like Ahmedabad, Surat and Vadodara.
This highway is part of the Golden Quadrilateral project undertaken by National Highways Authority of India [6] and was the first part to be completed. The Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway is a part of NH 8. Before entering downtown Mumbai, NH 8 passes through nearly all suburbs on the Western line of Mumbai Suburban Railway, where it is popularly known as Western Express Highway.
National Highway 10 (NH 10) is a National Highway in northern India that originates at Delhi and ends at the town of Fazilka in Punjab near the Indo-Pakistani border.
National Highway 24 or NH 24 is a National Highway in India that connects the National capital Delhi to Uttar Pradesh state capital Lucknow running 438 kilometers in length. [7]
The Golden Quadrilateral is a national highway network connecting several major industrial, agricultural and cultural centres of India. It forms a quadrilateral with all the four major metro cities of India forming the vertices, viz., Delhi (north), Kolkata (east), Mumbai (west) and Chennai (south). Other major cities connected by this network include Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Balasore, Bhadrak, Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Berhampur, Durgapur, Faridabad, Guntur, Gurugram, Jaipur, Kanpur, Pune, Kolhapur, Surat, Vijayawada, Eluru, Ajmer, Visakhapatnam, Bodhgaya, Varanasi, Prayagraj, Agra, Mathura, Dhanbad, Gandhinagar, Udaipur, and Vadodara. The main objective of these super highways is to reduce the travel time between the major cities of India, running roughly along the perimeter of the country. The North–South corridor linking Srinagar and Kanyakumari, and East–West corridor linking Silchar (Assam) and Porbandar (Gujarat) are additional projects. These highway projects are implemented by the National Highway Authority Of India (NHAI). At 5,846 kilometres (3,633 mi), it is the largest highway project in India and the fifth longest in the world. It is the first phase of the National Highways Development Project (NHDP), and consists of two, four, and six-lane express highways, built at a cost of ₹600 billion (US$7.2 billion). The project was planned in 1999, launched in 2001, and was completed in 7 January 2012.
The National Capital Region is a planning region centred upon the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi in India. It encompasses Delhi and several districts surrounding it from the states of Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan. The NCR and the associated National Capital Region Planning Board (NCRPB) were created in 1985 to plan the development of the region and to evolve harmonized policies for the control of land-uses and development of infrastructure in the region. Prominent cities of NCR include Delhi, Faridabad, Ghaziabad, Gurgaon and Noida.
Delhi has significant reliance on its transport infrastructure. The city has developed a highly efficient public transport system with the introduction of the Delhi Metro, which is undergoing a rapid modernization and expansion since 2006. There are 16.6 million registered vehicles in the city as of 30 June 2014, which is the highest in the world among all cities, most of which do not follow any pollution emission norm, while the Delhi metropolitan region has 11.2 million vehicles. Delhi and NCR lose nearly 42 crore man-hours every month while commuting between home and office through public transport, due to the traffic congestion. Therefore, serious efforts, including a number of transport infrastructure projects, are under way to encourage usage of public transport in the city.
The Delhi–Noida Direct Flyway or DND Flyway is India's first 8-lane wide, 7.5 km (4.7 mi) long access-controlled expressway in Delhi NCR. It connects Maharani Bagh and Nizamuddin on the western side to Noida (Sector-15A) and Mayur Vihar on the eastern side of the Yamuna river. The Noida Toll Bridge Company Limited (NTBCL) owned by IL&FS, operate and maintains it on build-own-operate-transfer (BOOT) basis. The expressway, which was opened to the public in January 2001 was constructed by Japan based Mitsui-Marubeni Corporation Ltd. The length of main carriageway (MCW), including bridge on Yamuna river is 6.0 km. Rest 1.5 km is Mayur Vihar link (MVL), which was opened in 2008.
Joya is a nagar panchayat located along highway NH-24 in Amroha district in the Western Uttar Pradesh. It is predominantly a milk producing city. Joya was a gram panchayat before 1988. The late Abrar Hussain was the first chairman of Joya in 1988.
Noida International Airport, also known as Jewar Airport, is an upcoming international airport being constructed near Jewar in Gautam Buddha Nagar district, Uttar Pradesh, India, which will serve the National Capital Region (NCR). The airport is situated in the new planned YEIDA city.
The Western Peripheral Expressway (WPE) or Kundli–Manesar–Palwal Expressway, is an operational 6-lane, 135.6 km (84.3 mi)-long Expressway in the Haryana state of India. Along with the Eastern Peripheral Expressway, the Western Peripheral Expressway is expected to divert more than 50,000 heavy vehicles away from Delhi, which will help to maintain good air quality in Delhi. Western Peripheral Expressway along with Eastern Peripheral Expressway completes the largest Ring Road around Delhi. There are 10 tolled entries and exits, from north to south - Kundli, Kharkhoda, Bahadurgarh, Badli, Fartukhnagar, Panchgaon, Manesar, Taoru, Sohna & Palwal. Toll rate notified in December 2018 is INR1.35 per km for cars, INR2.18 per km for light motor vehicles, INR4.98 per km for trucks and buses, and two wheelers are not permitted on the expressway.
Old National Highway 2 or Old NH 2, was a major National Highway in India, that connected the states of Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal. It constitutes a major portion of the historical Grand Trunk Road along with old NH 91 and old NH 1 in India. The highway connects national capital Delhi with Kolkata as well as important cities such as Faridabad, Mathura, Agra, Kanpur, Allahabad, Varanasi, Dhanbad, Asansol, Durgapur and Bardhaman.
Yamuna Expressway is a 6-lane wide and 165.5 km (102.8 mi) long access-controlled expressway in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It is presently India's sixth longest expressway and connects Greater Noida with Agra. It was built to de-congest the older Delhi–Agra national highway (NH-2) or Mathura Road.
Expressways are the highest class of roads in India. In July 2023, the total length of expressways in India was 5,930 km (3,680 mi), with 11,127.69 km (6,914.43 mi) under construction. These are controlled-access highways where entrance and exits are controlled by the use of cloverleaf, three-way, trumpet or grade separated interchanges that are incorporated into the design of the expressway and designed for maximum speed of 120 km/h, whereas National highways are flyover access or tolled, where entrance and exit is through the side of the flyover, at each intersection of highway with road, flyovers are provided to bypass the city/town/village traffic and these highways are designed for speed of 100 km/h. Some roads are not access-controlled expressways but are still named expressways, such as the Bagodara–Tarapur Expressway, Biju Expressway, these are actually state highways that are not declared by the central government as an Expressway, hence not an Expressway or National Highway.
The Faridabad–Noida–Ghaziabad Expressway or FNG Expressway is an under-construction 56 km long, 6-lane wide expressway in Delhi NCR region of India. It will connect Faridabad in Haryana with Noida and Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh.
Sarita Vihar is a residential colony situated in South East Delhi, National Capital Territory of Delhi, India. It is near the Kalindi Kunj- Noida Toll bridge or GD Birla Marg-Road 13A which connects the district to Noida.The area is situated close to Uttar pradesh border. It is believed that the site was primarily chosen as the construction site for the Games Village of the 1982 Asian Games, however on the insistence of the late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, the plan was changed to convert it into an upscale residential housing locality. In 2013, it was awarded the "Greenest Colony in Delhi" tag by the then Chief Minister of Delhi Sheila Dikshit, credited to the efforts of its RWA members who have aggressively worked towards improving the state of parks and green spots in the locality.
Delhi Faridabad Skyway is a 4.4 km long, 6-lane wide elevated highway that connects Delhi with Faridabad, a prominent city in National Capital Region. It was inaugurated on 29 November 2010. The project was undertaken by concessionaire "Badarpur Faridabad Tollway Limited", a subsidiary of Hindustan Construction Company Limited. The highway begins at Badarpur, Delhi near DDA Flats Badarpur and ends at Sector 37, Faridabad, Haryana near Sarai Metro station.
The Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) is an authority set up in 2007 by the Government of Uttar Pradesh to develop expressway projects in the state. The headquarters of UPEIDA is located at Paryatan Bhawan in Gomti Nagar, Lucknow.

Bijwasan railway station, on Delhi–Jaipur line lies immediate southwest of Delhi's main airport the IGI Airport, in Bijwasan in South Delhi in India. The station, part of Delhi Suburban Railway, is being upgraded to the world class regional multimodal interchange for the IGI airport by 2024. It will connect to the Haryana Orbital Rail Corridor in south at Patli railway station.
The Delhi–Mumbai Expressway is a 1,350 km long, 8-lane wide under-construction access-controlled expressway connecting India's national capital New Delhi to its financial capital Mumbai. The foundation stone for the project was laid by union minister of Road Transport & Highways Nitin Gadkari in the presence of Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley on 8 March 2019 and it was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The total project value including the land acquisition cost is around ₹1,00,000 crores . It is expected to be completed by October 2025.
The DND–Faridabad–KMP Expressway, formally known as NH-148NA is a 59 km long, 6-lane wide access-controlled expressway in Delhi NCR, India. It connects the junction of DND Flyway and Ring Road at Maharani Bagh in Delhi with KMP Expressway at Khalilpur, Nuh district in Haryana. The NH-148NA is a spur (branch) of Delhi–Mumbai Expressway project. This expressway will have an additional 31 km long spur from Sector-65, Faridabad bypass to Jewar Airport.
Madanpur Khadar is an urban village in South East district of Delhi. It is located on Delhi-UP Border and is named after Thakur Madan Singh Chauhan. The term Khadar is attached to the village’s name because it is situated on the banks of Yamuna river. It was declared as an urban village by the administrative authorities under Delhi Metropolitan Council in 1966.
Urban Extension Road-II or NH-344M is an upcoming 75.7 km long, 6 lanes & 6 lanes wide grade separated expressway in Delhi NCR, India. It would start from National Highway 44 at Alipur then passes from Rohini, Mundka, Najafgarh, Dwarka and end at Delhi–Gurgaon Expressway on National Highway 48 near Mahipalpur. Its main route forms a semicircle on the western side of Delhi, additionally it has two side spurs - one from Bawana in Northwest Delhi to Sonipat in Bawana's North and second in west Delhi from between Tikri border & Najafgarh to NH9 Bahadurgarh south bypass. Delhi NCT has 4 concentric ring roads around it - namely Inner Ring Road; Outer Ring Road; third ring outside it formed by the combination of UER-II & Chilla-Okhla Expressway, and fourth ring formed by the combination of part of Dwarka Expressway & Gurugaon-Ghata Expressway, Gurgaon-Sohna Elevated Corridor Expressway, Sohna-Faridabad section of Delhi–Mumbai Expressway, Faridabad–Noida–Ghaziabad Expressway (FNG), Ghaziabad-Narela Expressway (planned) and Rai-Narela-Bahadurgarh-Gurgaon Expressway. Outside these ring roads, NCR region will have 3 Regional Circular Expressways and 3 Zonal Circular Expressways (ZCE).
