Hugh Crosbie Heggie AO PSM (born 1950) is an Australian public servant and physician who is the 23rd and current administrator of the Northern Territory since 2 February 2023. [1]
Heggie was born in Melbourne, Victoria in 1950, [2] and educated at Bonbeach High School. He attended the University of Melbourne and graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery. On the completion of his first degree he relocated to Sydney where he worked as a research pharmacologist before returning to Melbourne. In 2001, after 20 years in Melbourne, he relocated to the Northern Territory with his family. [3]
Between 2016 and 2022, Heggie served as the Chief Health Officer and executive director of Public Health and Clinical Excellence in the Northern Territory. He played a significant role during the COVID-19 restrictions in Australia and served on numerous boards, committees and councils locally and nationally. [3]
On 29 November 2022, the Chief Minister Natasha Fyles announced Heggie would become the 23rd Administrator of the Northern Territory, succeeding Vicki O'Halloran. [4] He was sworn in by Governor-General David Hurley on 2 February 2023. [1]
Heggie was awarded the Public Service Medal (PSM) in the 2021 Australia Day Honours for "outstanding public service to community health in the Northern Territory". [5] He was also awarded the Humanitarian Overseas Service Medal in 2021 for his contributions during the 2015 Cyclone Pam disaster in Vanuatu. [3]
He was invested as a Knight of the Order of St John on his appointment as the Administrator of the Northern Territory on 5 February 2023. [6] Heggie was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia in the 2024 Australia Day Honours for "distinguished service to medicine and medical research organisations, and as Administrator of the Northern Territory". The Northern Territory Police Force is the police body that has legal jurisdiction over the Northern Territory of Australia. This police service has 1,607 police members made up of 83 senior sergeants, 228 sergeants, 912 constables, 220 auxiliaries, and 64 Aboriginal Community Police Officers. The rest of the positions are members of commissioned rank and inoperative positions. It also has a civilian staff working across the NT Police, Fire and Emergency Services.

Sally Gordon Thomas is a former Judge of the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory, serving from 1992 to 2009. She was appointed to the Court on 10 August 1992 and was the first woman to be appointed a Judge of the Court. She was sworn in as the first female Administrator of the Northern Territory in October 2011. One of her first engagements in the role was to welcome Barack Obama, the President of the United States, to Darwin during his visit in November 2011.
