Innsmouth no Yakata, [lower-alpha 1] also rendered as Insmouse no Yakata, is a 1995 first-person video game developed by Be Top and published by I'MAX in Japan for the Virtual Boy. Assuming the role of a private detective in 1922, the player is tasked with escaping a monster-infested mansion with an artifact called the Necronomicon . The player navigates several mazelike levels that must be finished in a certain amount of time. It is loosely based on the H.P. Lovecraft novel The Shadow over Innsmouth , though the only similarity between the two is the presence of fishlike monsters. It received mixed reviews, with critics praising its Lovecraftian setting. Reception of the gameplay was mixed, with critical contemporary reviews from magazines Famitsu and VB Guide, though it was viewed positively for its ambition and uniqueness.
Innsmouth no Yakata is a first-person horror video game where players assume the role of a private detective in 1922 who must escape from a monster-infested mansion with an artifact called the Necronomicon . [3] Two kinds of collectible orbs can be found randomly placed on each floor. The white orbs reveal the entirety of the map, while the black orbs show the locations of items on that specific floor. It features four different endings, including a "joke" ending that sends the player back to the start of the game. [3]

Initial reviews for Innsmouth no Yakata were lukewarm. Famitsu was critical towards the game's lack of ambition and the presence of a time limit, saying that most players would not be able to fully immerse themselves in its world due to the short length of the timer. [8] They unfavorably compared it to Dungeon Master (1987), disliking its limited ammunition and a relatively low level of difficulty. [8] VB Guide felt similarly about the game, criticizing its gameplay and horror elements. However, they felt the presentation was good. [9] Despite the more negative reception, Nintendo Magazine felt that its horror-themed locations and role-playing elements would make it a success in Japan. [10]
Retrospectively, it has been met with a similarly mixed response. Writer Jeremy Parish found Innsmouth no Yakata to be an exception to the Virtual Boy's otherwise lackluster Japan-only catalog, praising its "hyper-focused design" and for effective use of the Virtual Boy's red-and-black color scheme to work with the Lovecraftian setting. [5] Meanwhile, Benji Edwards of PC Magazine , while commenting that it was not great, praised the difficulty and Lovecraftian setting for enhancing the experience. [11] Official Nintendo Magazine staff were more critical, calling its controls "awful" and sprites "ugly." [12] Dave Frear of Nintendo Life felt that the game was worthwhile conceptually, citing the number of levels and endings, as well as being a rare first-person Virtual Boy game. However, he was similarly critical of the controls and animations, also contending that the combat was not interesting. [7] This criticism of the gameplay was echoes by Retro Gamer staff, who called it and its environment repetitive while also criticizing that the game's password system and time limit harmed the atmosphere and tension of the game. Club and Hardcore Gaming 101 considered it a precursor to the twin-stick movement control style found in first-person shooters and virtual reality horror games respectively. It stars Wario, who finds himself deep underground after stumbling upon a treasure-filled cave and must find his way back to the surface. Throughout the journey, the player explores and searches for items and power-ups while fighting enemies and defeating bosses. Wario has the ability to jump between the background and foreground at certain points, making use of Virtual Boy's stereoscopic 3D effect.

It was released in Japan in August 1995 and North America by Nintendo in December 1995. The player controls a starship, the Ragnarok, that must destroy a malfunctioning supercomputer on a human colony planet before it wipes out all of mankind. Gameplay is similar to Hudson's Star Soldier series, featuring power-up items that increase the player's abilities and parallax scrolling. The player can move their ship farther into the background to avoid enemies and obstacles in the way.
Waterworld is a series of video games released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Virtual Boy, MS-DOS, Microsoft Windows and Game Boy, based on the film of the same name, along with unpublished versions for the Mega Drive/Genesis, Sega Saturn, Atari Jaguar, 3DO and PlayStation. It was met with critical praise for its controls and physics and mixed reviews for its graphics. Nintendo Power called it the third best Virtual Boy release of its year.
Dragon Hopper is an unreleased action-adventure video game that was in development by Intelligent Systems and planned to be published by Nintendo on a scheduled 1996 release date exclusively for the Virtual Boy. Along with Japan System Supply's Bound High!, it would have been one of the first second-generation titles for the system if not for the poor critical and commercial reception it garnered that led to its planned relaunch being discontinued, which also led to the game's cancellation in the process.

In the game, players take control of a transforming robot named Chalvo through a series of levels riddled with hazardous obstacles to avoid across multiple worlds, while destroying or knocking out alien invaders off the area. The project was first conceptualized by designer and programmer Hideyuki Nakanishi, who wrote the idea on paper and placed it within a wall inside the offices of Japan System Supply, with his manager eventually greenlighting its development after seeing it.
