Zhang Jie (born 20 December 1982 in Chengdu, Sichuan), also known as Jason Zhang, is a Chinese pop singer. He made his television series debut in the reality singing competition My Show in 2004, which he won.

By the end of May 2017, Zhang had recorded 12 albums and held 34 concerts. He has won the Most Popular Male Singer (Mainland) Award 31 times and Best Male Singer (Mainland) 8 times.

Biography

1982–2003: Early life

Zhang was born on 20 December 1982, in Chengdu, Sichuan.

In 2000, he studied at Sichuan Normal University.

In 2003, he took part in the MTV-Samsung Anycall National Singing Competition and won second place.

2004–2006: Shang Teng Universal

In 2004, Zhang took part in the first season of My Show. After progressing through stages of strict selection, he won the annual championship in the finals, with the original song "Love of the Plough", composed with GOU Wei. Then he signed with Shang Teng Universal.

In 2005, Zhang released his debut album, The First Album. This earned him numerous newcomer awards, such as the Global Chinese Music Chart Most Popular Male Newcomer award.

In 2006, after the release of his second album, Love Me Again, Zhang's music career was at stake due to changes at the top management of his record company.[ clarification needed ]

2007–2015: EE-Media

In 2007, he took part in Hunan TV's show Super Boy and won 4th place. Zhang, the third runner-up of the show, signed a deal with EE-Media and released an EP, The Most Beautiful Sun, in the same year, which marked a fresh restart of his career.

In May 2008, Zhang held his first concert in Beijing at Beijing Exhibition Center. In July, he held a concert at Hangzhou Gymnasium.

In October, he released the album The Day After Tomorrow. With its positive performance on the music charts, he won his first "Most Popular Male Singer (Mainland)" award.

In 2009, for the album The Day After Tomorrow, Zhang gained 11 nominations in Beijing pop music ceremony[ clarification needed ] and became the favorite figure. In November, he released the album Through Trilogy. On December 19, he held a theme concert for Through Trilogy at Beijing Workers' Gymnasium.

In April 2010, Zhang attended the Boao Forum for Asia as an invited guest to perform two songs of Michael Jackson: "Billie Jean" and "Beat it". In June, he sang the theme song for the film Triple Tap. In November, he released his 6th album, It's Love. In November, he held a theme concert as It's Love at Beijing Workers' Gymnasium. On November 28, he won the "Best Asian Artist" award in the Mnet Asian Music Awards. In December, he was invited as the only male singer from mainland China to the TVB Golden Melody Awards Ceremony in Hong Kong, and received an award for top ten golden songs of the year and Most Popular Male Singer (Mainland).[ citation needed ]

In 2011, Zhang released the album Stand Up. In December, he held the theme concert It's Love in his hometown Chengdu.

On March 1, 2012, as an invited guest, Zhang performed in a collaborative staging of the song "My Love" at the concert of Westlife. He started his new touring concerts at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on 5 May and Shanghai Grand Stage on June 30 respectively. On September 29, he released an album called One Chance, and on November 19 he released a cover album called Love That We Once Encountered. Also in this year, he set up his own studio: Zhang Jie Studio.

In February 2013, for the first time, he was invited to perform the song "Give Me Your Love" with Yoga at the CCTV Spring Festival Gala. In June, he went to Berklee College of Music for further studies. In September, he was invited to the China Tennis Open with famous tennis players Li Na and Novak Djokovic to promote public welfare work. In November, Zhang released his 10th album, Just Love, and held his 10th concert in Guangzhou.

In January 2014, Zhang joined Season 2 of Hunan Television's I Am a Singer . From September to December, he held his first live tour, Fight Back For Love, which generated a positive response. In August, he was invited to perform the theme song, "Light the Future", at the Opening Ceremony of the Nanjing Youth Olympics 2014. In November, he was presented with the International Artist Award at the 2014 American Music Awards, as the first Chinese singer to win this award. In this year, he sang several songs for Chinese operas.

In April 2015, he released his collection with Xiaomi. He also participated in various talent shows, including some adventure shows, music shows and reality shows. In May, Zhang ended his eight-year contract with EE-Media, and made his own independent studio. He won awards from several music shows this year. He also sang for the opera The Lost Tomb and the film Monk Comes Down the Mountain, directed by Kaige Chen.[ citation needed ]

2016–present: Planet Culture

On February 7, 2016, Zhang sang the song "Shining Era" at the CCTV Spring Festival Gala. On February 21, the Just For Star concert was held in United Artists Theater, Los Angeles. Zhang invited David Foster and violinist Lindsey Stirling to perform together[ citation needed ].

On April 26, Zhang set up his personal label, Planet Culture, and cooperated with Linfair Records[ citation needed ].

On July 16, Zhang began his first world tour at Beijing Worker's Stadium.

On July 21, 2016, he performed Star Trek Beyond 's Chinese theme song "Lost in the Stars", and attended the film's premiere at Embarcadero Marina Park South. He recorded the promotional song "Give You My World" for the film Allied in November.

From July to December, Zhang's tour travelled to Beijing, Nanjing, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Chengdu, Xi'an, Wuhan, [1] Hefei, Dalian, and Kunming. With each city he visited, the concerts were sold out[ citation needed ].

In February 2017, Zhang joined Hunan Television's Singer 2017 as the first previous season contestant to join the competition this season. In May and June, he brought his world tour in the US, Canada, Malaysia and Australia. On May 7, he held his concert in Dolby Theatre, as the first mainland singer singing in the Dolby Theatre [ citation needed ]. On May 14, he sang in the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, Vancouver. On May 21, Zhang came to David Geffen Hall, Lincoln Center. On June 10, he performed in Kuala Lumpur and June 18 in Sydney. In June, Zhang sang China's theme song, "Torches", for Transformers: The Last Knight .

In 2020, He ranked 86th on Forbes China Celebrity 100 list.[ citation needed ]

Zhang participated in Hunan Television's long-running singing reality competition I Am a Singer , and made it to the finals on both attempts.

I Am a Singer

Zhang debuted on Week three as a substitute singer as a replacement of the first eliminated singer Gary Chaw. He made it to the finals, but did not finish in the top two to qualify for the "Ultimate Winner Candidate" (the candidates were G.E.M. and Han Lei, with the latter winning the season).

Singer 2017

In February 2017, Zhang later returned again in the fifth season as the one of four returning singers to participate in the competition. He finished in eighth place after narrowly avoiding eliminations on six of 11 performances. Unlike his first season appearance, Zhang was not selected to participate in the Biennial Concert.

Personal life

Zhang is married to Xie Na, who holds the Guinness World Records as the first person to accumulate 100 million followers on Weibo. [5] . On May 5, 2011, Zhang and Xie registered their marriage in Chengdu, China. On September 26, 2011, they married at Shangri-La, China. On September 26, 2017, Zhang revealed on his Weibo that his wife was expecting. On February 1, 2018, they welcomed twin daughters. [6]

Jane Zhang is a Chinese singer-songwriter. She is known for her signature whistle register and has been dubbed the "Dolphin Princess" (海豚公主). Zhang began performing as a teenager by singing in pubs to help earn money for her family. After signing with Huayi Brothers Media Corporation in 2005, Zhang released her first studio album, The One (2006). Her second album, Update, was released in 2007. Zhang's third studio album, Jane@Music, was released in 2009. Her fourth studio album, Believe in Jane, was released in 2010. In 2011, Zhang released her fifth studio album, Reform, which was certified double platinum by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI).

Zhang Liyin is a Chinese singer and songwriter of Yi ethnicity. She has released singles in both China and South Korea, singing in both languages. She is also the first foreign artist to win Best Newcomer award at the Mnet Asian Music Awards.

Sun Nan is a pop singer from Dalian in mainland China. His songs include "Be there or Be Square", "The Wind Goes to North", "Save", and his song for the 2008 Summer Olympics, "Forever Friends". Sun's album Crescent Moon was released in 1990. He has released 12 albums with over 10 million sales in total. Since 2012, Sun has judged or hosted numerous singing competitions in China.

Hu Xia is a Chinese singer, actor. He won the sixth season of Taiwan's One Million Star in 2010 and released his debut album, Hu Love Xia, later that year. Apart from his albums, he has sung a great number of soundtracks for Chinese TV series, movies and games, the most famous ones being, Those Years (那些年), for You Are the Apple of My Eye in 2011 and Don't You Know (知否知否) for The Story of Minglan in 2018. Other notables include Rush to the Dead Summer, Story of Yanxi Palace, Le Coup de Foudre,Word of Honor, and Heaven Official’s Blessing.

Tan Jing is a solo Chinese singer in the CPC Central Military Commission Political Department Song and Dance Troupe and a first class national actress. Her music blends bel canto, Chinese national music (Guoyue), and popular singing styles. She has been dubbed "The Voice of Harmony" for her efforts to spread Chinese music, culture, and goodwill through her professional and philanthropic contributions.

Zhang Yixing , known professionally as Lay Zhang or simply Lay, is a Chinese rapper, singer-songwriter, dancer, actor, record producer and businessman. Zhang first gained recognition in 2005 for participating in the Chinese television talent show Star Academy. He later debuted as a member of the South Korean-Chinese boy band Exo and its Chinese sub-unit Exo-M under SM Entertainment in 2012.

Yang Kun is a Chinese singer-songwriter. He was one of the judges of TV talent show The Voice of China during the first season and third season of the show. He was on the first season of Sing My Song and was a contestant as one of the seven initial singers on Singer 2019 finishing fourth place.

Hua Chenyu is a Chinese rock singer and songwriter. He gained widespread recognition for his music talent, strong vocal ability and stage performance after participating in Singer 2018. One of the critics from the show states that Hua Chenyu has brought the Chinese pop music to a new level of art after his cover performance of 《Fake Monk》(假行僧). Many songs he composed contain his thoughts to the world or imply his own story that he would like to share with his fans. Songs like 《Qi Tian齊天》, 《Madhouse 瘋人院》, 《Seven Personalities 七重人格》, 《Bull Fight 鬥牛》,and more are all stamped with his unique creation and deep messages. In his 2022 interview with Bazaar Man Magazine, he states that rock spirit is the base color of this life and is also the root of his music. In a music market dominated by ballad style of Chinese pop songs, he refuses to be limited and be defined in a framed genre.

Wang Qing is a Chinese actor, singer and host. He was invited to play Chi Cheng in the web series Counterattack in May 2015 and entered into the public eye. On 22 September 2015, he collaborated with Feng Jianyu and released the song This Summer. He has become a regular host for Super Show on Anhui Television since April 2016. In July 2016, he played a lead role in the film Infinite Fight.

Xu Weizhou, known internationally as Timmy Xu, is a Chinese actor, singer, and songwriter. In 2016, he bursted to the scene with debut character Bai Luoyin in the Chinese BL web series Addicted. He was the first artist to achieve the top spot on the Billboard China V chart and Mandarin chart within the same week. Xu was the first solo artist from mainland China to hold a concert in South Korea, and to be officially invited as a guest to the Billboard Music Awards in 2017.

Liu Yuning is a Chinese singer, actor, and the lead singer of Modern Brothers. In 2018, Liu rose to stardom by his covers on platforms YY's Live Streaming and Douyin, and released his debut single "Imagination" on September 15, 2018. He released his debut studio album Ten in 2019, and held his first concert tour Growing Storm in 2020. Forbes China listed Liu on their 30 Under 30 Asia list in 2019. His debut album won the "Media Recommended Album" award at the 2020 Chinese Top Ten Music Awards, and his second extended play Listen•Ning (2020–21) won the "Most Popular EP" award in 2021 Chinese Top Ten Music Awards. Besides singing, he also gained recognition as an actor through his roles in television series.

Mao Buyi is a Chinese singer and songwriter. Mao Buyi rose to prominence for winning the all-male singing competition The Coming One (明日之子) in 2017. Mao is a self-taught pop artist known for works depicting the subtle nuances of everyday life. He has released three studio albums to which he authored all lyrics and compositions. Mao's discography also includes over a dozen theme songs from original soundtracks for television dramas, movies, and video games.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Zhou Shen</span> Chinese singer

Zhou Shen, also known as Charlie Zhou, is a Chinese singer known for his ethereal voice and wide vocal range. He gained prominence with his renowned song "Big Fish", which has garnered eight awards. In November 2017, Zhou released his debut album Charlie's Debut Album, created in collaboration with producer Gao Xiaosong, songwriter Yin Yue, and composer Qian Lei. He has performed OSTs for numerous high-profile Chinese films and TV series, including Big Fish & Begonia, Dahufa, and Jiang Ziya, among others. Since 2022, he has been a cast member of the Chinese variety show Keep Running!.
