Jefferson is an unincorporated community in Marengo County, Alabama, United States. [1] It is the birthplace of sculptor Geneva Mercer. [2]

Jefferson appeared on the 1870 and 1880 U.S. Censuses. In 1870, it reported 233 residents. Of those, 143 (61%) were black and 90 (39%) were white. [4] Racial demographics in 1880 were not reported. These were the only two occasions on which it appeared on census records.

History

It was founded in 1810, before Marengo was a county or Alabama was a state. Most of the original settlers were veterans of the American Revolution, including John Sample, John Gilmore, and Reuben Hildreth. [5] The village was named Jefferson in 1820, after Thomas Jefferson, and that year saw the first church established. [5] The population had reached 200 people by 1860 and the village contained two dry goods stores, one drugstore, a male and a female academy, a Masonic Lodge, a hotel, two tanneries, a wagon shop, and a blacksmith shop. [5]

Allen Grove is a plantation house and historic district located in Old Spring Hill, Alabama. The Greek Revival house was built for John Gray Allen in 1857 by David Rudisill. In 1890 the rear facade was altered when a kitchen and pantry wing and a two-story back porch was added. Cedar Haven was a historic Greek Revival plantation house located near Faunsdale, Alabama. It was built in 1850 by Phillip J. Weaver. Weaver was a prominent merchant and planter. He was born in Mifflintown, Pennsylvania in 1797 and relocated to Selma from Uniontown, Maryland in 1818. He ran a very successful store in Selma and also maintained a home there. Weaver was the paternal grandfather of the artist Clara Weaver Parrish.

The Demopolis Public School also known as Demopolis Junior High School is a historic public school building in the city of Demopolis, Alabama. It was designed by architect Frank Lockwood in the Beaux-Arts style and was completed in 1914. The new two-story brick building replaced an earlier two-story Queen Anne style wood-frame structure that was built in 1889 and burned in 1913. The contractors for the new building were J.T. Clancy and W.M. Neely. The building continued as a part of the Demopolis City School System until it closed its doors in June 1981. The school was added to the National Register of Historic Places on October 28, 1983. The building now houses a theater group, the Canebrake Players.

The facade is granite and brick with five arched bays, the three central bays feature Palladian windows. The roof line is crowned with a vasiform balustrade. The interior is marble. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 28, 1984, due to its architectural significance.

Vineland is an unincorporated community in the southeastern corner of Marengo County, Alabama, United States. Vineland had several stores, a cotton gin, and Baptist and Methodist churches. It also had a post office from 1887 to 1916, with Julius A. Kimbrough serving as the first postmaster and Solomon S. Strickland as the last. This general area, which also included Surginer and Hampden, was originally known as Pineville Precinct. Pineville was also an early name for Putnam, in the southwestern corner of the county.

Half Acre is an unincorporated community in Marengo County, Alabama, United States. It has gone through a variety of name changes since the early 20th century. The community had a post office at one time, but it no longer exists. Although a thriving community in its early years, it has since dwindled into obscurity.

Octagon is an unincorporated community in Marengo County, Alabama, United States. Octagon had a post office at one time, but it no longer exists.

Beaver Creek is an unincorporated community in Marengo County, Alabama, United States. Its name is derived from the nearby Beaver Creek and the local church, Beaver Creek Baptist Church. Beaver Creek had a school at one time, but it was consolidated into Sweet Water High School in the 1920s.
