John Angus Rae Blain (born 4 January 1979) [1] is a Scottish first-class cricketer. He is a right-handed batsman,and a right-arm fast-medium pace bowler. In May 2019,he was inducted into Cricket Scotland's Hall of Fame. [2] However,in July 2022,Blain was "temporarily suspended" from the hall of fame. [3]
Attaining his first cap in 1996,Blain became Scotland's youngest-capped cricketer since 1890. He played during the 1996 European Championship taking seven wickets at 9.85. Blain was initially signed as a footballer to Falkirk but decided to switch to cricket,signing for Northamptonshire,having not made an impact as a footballer.
Blain left Northamptonshire County Cricket Club at the end of the 2003 season to join Yorkshire County Cricket Club,where he made sporadic appearances for the first team until he was initially released in 2006.
He played for Yorkshire League side,Rotherham Cricket Club in 2007,and was due to sign for the Scottish League side,Ferguslie,in 2008. The move fell through,and Blain played for the Scottish Saltires and Rotherham.
He appeared in all Scotland's games at the 1999 and 2007 World Cups. He finished the 1999 event with 10 wickets at 21 with a strike rate of 22.3,the best in the tournament. [4]
In the 2010,Blain made a solitary appearance for Yorkshire in the County Championship,and in both that campaign and in 2011,Blain was the regular captain of Yorkshire's Second XI.
Blain is an ECB Level 4 Coach. Blain was named as head coach of Grange Cricket Club. He also played as player-cum-coach with West of Scotland Cricket Club from 2010 to 2013. He was named head coach of newly formed team Eastern Knights which will play in Regional Pro Series. [5] [6] [7] [8] [9]
Northamptonshire County Cricket Club is one of eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Northamptonshire. Its limited overs team is called the Northants Steelbacks –a reference to the Northamptonshire Regiment which was formed in 1881. Ian Joseph Harvey is a former Australian cricketer. He was an all-rounder who played 73 One Day Internationals for Australia and was named as one of the five Wisden Cricketers of the Year for 2004 for his performances in county cricket. He was a part of the Australian squad which won the 2003 Cricket World Cup.
Jack Birkenshaw,is a former English cricketer,who later stood as an umpire and worked as a coach. Cricket writer Colin Bateman stated,"Jack Birkenshaw was the epitome of a good all-round county cricketer:a probing off-spinner who used flight and guile,a handy batsman who could grind it out or go for the slog,a dependable fielder and great competitor."
Frank Edward Woolley was an English professional cricketer who played for Kent County Cricket Club between 1906 and 1938 and for the England cricket team. A genuine all-rounder,Woolley was a left-handed batsman and a left-arm bowler. He was an outstanding fielder close to the wicket and is the only non wicket-keeper to have held over 1,000 catches in a first-class career,whilst his total number of runs scored is the second highest of all time and his total number of wickets taken the 27th highest.
Arnold Sidebottom is an English former footballer and cricketer,who played cricket for Yorkshire and played one Test match for England.
David Harry Wigley is an English former first-class cricketer. He latterly played for Northamptonshire County Cricket Club,his third county after previously playing for Yorkshire and then Worcestershire,until his early retirement from the game in 2010. He was a right arm fast medium bowler and right-handed batsman.
Gerald Arthur Smithson was an English cricketer who played in two Tests for England in 1947–48. He was born at Spofforth,West Riding of Yorkshire and died at Abingdon,Oxfordshire.
Douglas Robert Brown is a Scottish former cricketer and former head coach of the United Arab Emirates national team. Brown represented the Scottish national team as an all-rounder at One Day International (ODI) and Twenty20 International level,having earlier played One Day International cricket for England in 1997 and 1998. He played English county cricket for Warwickshire.
David John Capel was an English cricketer who played for Northamptonshire County Cricket Club and the English cricket team. Cricket writer Colin Bateman noted that "Capel was one of those unfortunate cricketers who became tagged as being the next all-rounder to fill Ian Botham's boots". He was well known for his long stint with Northamptonshire as a player as well as coach for nearly 32 years. He died on 2 September 2020,at the age of 57,after being diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2018.

Charles Lee was an English first-class cricketer,who played two matches for Yorkshire in 1952,one for the Minor Counties in 1953,and 268 matches for Derbyshire between 1954 and 1964. He captained Derbyshire in his last two seasons in the game,and scored over 12,000 runs for the club.
