John Richard Anthony Pearson FRS FIMMM MIChemE (born 18 September 1930) is a Scientific Consultant at Schlumberger Cambridge Research and Chairman of the Pearson Publishing Group since 1993. [1]


Early life

Pearson was born in Cairo on 18 September 1930 [1] and educated at Bedford Modern School, Trinity College Cambridge and Harvard University.


Pearson was Assistant Director of Research in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Cambridge (1960–73), Director of Studies in Mathematics and a Fellow of Trinity Hall, Cambridge (1961–73) and Professor of Chemical Engineering at Imperial College London (1973–82). [1] In 1975 Pearson became a lecturer at the University of Michigan and between 1978 and 1979 a Fairchild Scholar at the CIT, later a Professor of the University of Minnesota.

Pearson held the position of Visiting Professor at Princeton University (1967), the University of Wisconsin (1967), Rice University (1969), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1973–76), the University of Sydney (1982) and the University of Louvain (1994–95). [1] He is an Honorary Professorial Fellow of the University of Wales and the University of Birmingham. [1]


In 1980, Pearson was elected a member of the National Academy of Engineering for pioneering and contributing to fluid mechanics, interfacial phenomena, and the modeling of polymer flows.

Pearson was made a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2005. Commenting on the Fellowship, the University of Cambridge stated that he had ‘pioneered developments in fluid mechanics, including the first asymptotic analysis of viscous flow past a cylinder, a rapid-distortion theory of turbulence and studies of Marangoni convection, and the instability of flow under rollers’. [2]

Henry Keith Moffatt, FRS FRSE is a Scottish mathematician with research interests in the field of fluid dynamics, particularly magnetohydrodynamics and the theory of turbulence. He was Professor of Mathematical Physics at the University of Cambridge from 1980 to 2002.

Edward John Hinch is a Professor of fluid dynamics at the University of Cambridge, and fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge.

William Reginald Dean (1896–1973) was a British applied mathematician and fluid dynamicist. His research interests included Stokes flow, solid mechanics, and flow in curved channels. The Dean number bears his name.

Ann Dowling Engineering professor

Dame Ann Patricia Dowling is a British mechanical engineer who researches combustion, acoustics and vibration, focusing on efficient, low-emission combustion and reduced road vehicle and aircraft noise. Dowling is a Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Professor of Mechanical Engineering, and from 2009 to 2014 she was Head of the Department of Engineering at the University of Cambridge, where she was the first female professor in 1993. She was President of the Royal Academy of Engineering from 2014–2019, the Academy's first female president.

Gretar Tryggvason American fluid dynamicist (born 1956)

Gretar Tryggvason is Department Head of Mechanical Engineering and Charles A. Miller Jr. Distinguished Professor at Johns Hopkins University. He is known for developing the front tracking method to simulate multiphase flows and free surface flows. Tryggvason was the Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Computational Physics from 2002–2015.

John Frank Davidson FRS FREng FIChemE was a British chemical engineer and former Shell Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Cambridge. He is regarded as the founding father of the subject of Fluidization in Chemical Engineering.

Dudley Brian Spalding, FRS FREng was Professor of Heat Transfer and Head of the Computational Fluid Dynamics Unit at Imperial College, London. He was one of the founders of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and an internationally recognized contributor to the fields of heat transfer, fluid mechanics and combustion. He created the practice of CFD – its application to problems of interest to engineers. Most of today’s commercially available CFD software tools trace their origin to the work done by Spalding's group in the decade spanning the mid-60s and mid-70s. Spalding became a Fellow of the Royal Society and Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering.

Leslie Gary Leal is the Warren & Katharine Schlinger Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He is known for his research work in the dynamics of complex fluids.

Her work has contributed significantly to the advancement of the engineering profession.
