The Joint Operations Division is a component of the South African National Defence Force tasked with conducting Joint Operations involving the various arms of the SANDF.
The Joint Operations Division was established on 1 August 1997 during a major reorganisation of the armed forces. [2]
Before the re-organisation each arm of Service had an operations staff responsible for deploying its units as directed by the Service chief and the Chief of the SANDF. The Chief of the SANDF had an operations staff, playing a co-ordinating role.
Following the re-organisation each arm of service had to provide properly trained and equipped forces to Joint Operations. Joint Operations would then deploy these forces as necessary and revert to their parent service following the mission. The exception is the Special Forces Brigade, which is directly under the command of the Chief of the SANDF [3] and is permanently allocated to Joint Operations.
There are nine joint operational-tactical headquarters (HQ) under the SANDF Chief of Joint Operations, under which many Army units operate. For example, Regional Joint Task Force North (RJTFN) is situated in Pietersburg, commanded by a major-general. [4] The RJTFN HQ is responsible for the operational deployment of the Group headquarters or tactical headquarters under its command. RJTFN is subdivided into areas, each under the operational control of a group headquarters. For example, the Group headquarters at Messina is called the Soutpansberg Military Area. The other areas are Group 33, Nelspruit; Group 12, Ermelo; and Group 14, Pietersburg.
Headquarters Regional Joint Task Force West is located at Cape Town, while HQ Regional Joint Task Force East is at Durban.
Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) is the headquarters of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization's Allied Command Operations (ACO). Since 1967 it has been located in Casteau, north of the Belgian city of Mons, but it had previously been located, from 1953, at Rocquencourt, next to Versailles, France. From 1951 to 2003, SHAPE was the headquarters of Allied Command Europe (ACE). Since 2003 it has been the headquarters of Allied Command Operations, controlling all NATO operations worldwide.

The South African Army is the ground warfare branch of South African National Defence Force. Its roots can be traced to its formation after the Union of South Africa was created in 1910. The South African military evolved within the tradition of frontier warfare fought by Boer Commando (militia) forces, reinforced by the Afrikaners' historical distrust of large standing armies. It then fought as part of the wider British effort in both World War I and World War II, but afterwards was cut off from its long-standing Commonwealth ties with the ascension to power of the National Party in South Africa in 1948. The army was involved in a long and bitter counter-insurgency campaign in Namibia from 1966 to 1990. It also played a key role in controlling sectarian political violence inside South Africa during the late 1980s and early 1990s.
The South African Special Forces Brigade, colloquially known as the Recces, is South Africa's principal special operations unit and counter-insurgency elite, specialising in long-range combat reconnaissance as well as unconventional airborne operations. Only about 8% of recruits who undergo South African special forces training pass the course.

Military districts are formations of a state's armed forces which are responsible for a certain area of territory. They are often more responsible for administrative than operational matters, and in countries with conscript forces, often handle parts of the conscription cycle.

The corps has national and multinational operational responsibilities, and its commanding officer is the only one in Europe to have OPCON in peacetime.
Fleet Command is responsible for the command, operations, readiness, training and force generation of all ships, submarines, aircraft squadrons, diving teams, and shore establishments of the Royal Australian Navy. The Structure of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation is complex and multi-faceted. The decision-making body is the North Atlantic Council (NAC), and the member state representatives also sit on the Defence Policy and Planning Committee (DPPC) and the Nuclear Planning Group (NPG). 43 South African Brigade is a formation of the South African Army. It was established on 2 April 1997 at Wallmannsthal, Gauteng as 43 Mechanised Brigade and then changed to 43 South African Brigade in 1999. Administratively, the headquarters answers to the Chief of the Army. Operationally and for force training, the formation takes instructions from the Joint Operations Division. Units and subunits are attached as required for the task at hand. When not required, those units remain part of their respective type formations.
46 South African Brigade was established on April 1, 1999, as part of the restructuring process of the South African Army. Its initial function was to provide a formation headquarters for deployed reserve force elements and support 43 SA Brigade. 46 SA Brigade is a composite brigade consisting of a headquarters in Kensington, Johannesburg and a Brigade Administrative Area at Wallmansthal.
The Joint Rapid Reaction Force (JRRF) was a formation of the British Armed Forces from 1999 to 2010; it consisted of a pool of specialised units from all three armed services tasked with rapid deployment worldwide at short notice. The force was intended to be capable of mounting operations up to medium scale warfighting. It could be employed nationally, or multinationally under the auspices of NATO, the United Nations or any other coalition.
Headquarters Joint Forces New Zealand is the New Zealand Defence Force's (NZDF's) operational level headquarters and is responsible for the command and control of NZDF operations worldwide. It was established in 2001 at Trentham Military Camp to support the Commander Joint Forces New Zealand (COMJFNZ).
The South African Defense Review of 2012 was a policy review conducted by a panel of experts and chaired by retired politician and former Minister of Defense, Roelf Meyer. The review was commissioned by Lindiwe Sisulu the then Minister of Defense and Military Veterans, in July 2011. The review was motivated by the need to correct errors and shortcomings of the previous review.
6 Medical Battalion Group is a Medical Battalion in the South African Military Health Service (SAMHS). SAMHS is the fourth Arm of Service of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF).
