The minister of defence and military veterans (formerly the minister of defence) is a minister in the Government of South Africa, who is responsible for overseeing the Department of Defence, the Department of Military Veterans and the South African National Defence Force.

She was a cabinet minister from 2004 to 2021, including as Minister of Defence and Military Veterans between June 2012 and August 2021. She was an elected member of the National Executive Committee of the African National Congress (ANC) between 2002 and 2022 and is a former president of the ANC Women's League.

The Department of Military Veterans is a sub-department of the Department of Defence that is responsible for providing support and services to veterans of the South African military, including veterans of the armed wings of anti-apartheid movements. The political head of the department is the Minister of Defence and Military Veterans; as of 2024 this is Angie Motshekga. Her deputy is Thabang Makwetla, and the administrative head of the department is Director-General Derrick Mgwebi.

The South African Defence Review of 2012 was a policy review conducted by a panel of experts and chaired by retired politician and former Minister of Defence, Roelf Meyer. The review was commissioned by Lindiwe Sisulu the then Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, in July 2011. The review was motivated by the need to correct errors and shortcomings of the previous review.

The Unitas Medal was instituted by the President of the Republic of South Africa on 4 November 1994. It was awarded to all ranks who were on the active strength of all seven constituent military forces from 27 April 1994 to 10 May 1994, to commemorate their amalgamation into the South African National Defence Force. It was also awarded to personnel of the British Military Advisory and Training Team which served in South Africa at the time.

Thandi Ruth Modise is a South African politician who served as the Minister of Defence and Military Veterans from 2021 to 2024. She was previously the Premier of the North West from 2010 to 2014, Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces from 2014 to 2019, and Speaker of the National Assembly from 2019 to 2021.

The Military Veterans Act, 2011 is an act of the Parliament of South Africa that declares the government responsible for governing the affairs of the country's military veterans. It also outlines the benefits available to these veterans and names the President of South Africa as their patron-in-chief. The Act further establishes an Advisory Council on Military Veterans and the Military Appeals Board. The Act was passed by Parliament on 16 August 2011 and was assented to by President Jacob Zuma on 2 December 2011.

Ellen Nnana Ntsitse Molekane was South Africa's Deputy Minister of State Security between May 2014 and May 2019. A member of the African National Congress (ANC), she was a civil servant in the Department of Defence until President Jacob Zuma appointed her to the national executive. She was also briefly a member of the National Assembly from July 2018 to May 2019.

The executive branch of the national government of South Africa is divided into the cabinet and the civil service, as in the Westminster system. The Portfolio Committee on Defence and Military Veterans is one of the portfolio committees of the National Assembly of South Africa. It oversees the operations of the Department of Defence and Military Veterans and the Minister of Defence and Military Veterans as well as multiple statutory entities, including Armscor, the Castle Control Board, the Defence Force Service Commission, the Military Ombud, and Reserve Force Council.

Madipoane Refiloe Moremadi Mothapo is a South African politician served as a Member of the National Assembly of South Africa for the African National Congress from 2014 until 2019 and again from 2021 until 2024.
