The Minister of Defence and Military Veterans (formerly the Minister of Defence) is a Minister in the Government of South Africa, who is responsible for overseeing the Department of Defence, the Department of Military Veterans and the South African National Defence Force.

She was also the Minister of Home Affairs from 2004 to 2009 and Minister of Correctional Services from 2009 to 2012.

The Department of Military Veterans is a sub-department of the Department of Defence that is responsible for providing support and services to veterans of the South African military, including veterans of the armed wings of anti-apartheid movements. The political head of the department is the Minister of Defence and Military Veterans; as of 2021 this is Thandi Modise. Her deputy is Thabang Makwetla, and the administrative head of the department is Director-General Derrick Mgwebi.

The South African Defense Review of 2012 was a policy review conducted by a panel of experts and chaired by retired politician and former Minister of Defense, Roelf Meyer. The review was commissioned by Lindiwe Sisulu the then Minister of Defense and Military Veterans, in July 2011. The review was motivated by the need to correct errors and shortcomings of the previous review.

Unitas Medal Award

The Unitas Medal was instituted by the President of the Republic of South Africa on 4 November 1994. It was awarded to all ranks who were on the active strength of all seven constituent military forces from 27 April 1994 to 10 May 1994, to commemorate their amalgamation into the South African National Defence Force. It was also awarded to personnel of the British Military Advisory and Training Team which served in South Africa at the time.

Military Veterans Act, 2011

The Military Veterans Act, 2011 is an act of the Parliament of South Africa that declares the government responsible for governing the affairs of the country's military veterans. It also outlines the benefits available to these veterans and names the President of South Africa as their patron-in-chief. The Act further establishes an Advisory Council on Military Veterans and the Military Appeals Board. The Act was passed by Parliament on 16 August 2011 and was assented to by President Jacob Zuma on 2 December 2011.

Madipoane Refiloe Moremadi Mothapo is a South African politician who has served as a Member of the National Assembly of South Africa for the African National Congress since 2021. She had previously served as an African National Congress MP from 2014 to 2019.
