Joshua Ostrovsky [1] (born February 18, 1982), known professionally as The Fat Jewish, is an American entrepreneur, social media influencer, author and plus size model.

Early life

Ostrovsky was born and raised in New York City to a Russian-born radiologist father Paul, and a nutritionist mother Rebecca. He grew up in Manhattan on the Upper West Side. [2] [3] [4] He attended several schools, starting at the Packer school in Brooklyn, and then attending Trevor Day School and the Dwight School, both on the Upper West Side. As a very young actor, he appeared in several commercials, including one for Hershey's. [3] After attending New York University and Skidmore College and being expelled from both, he enrolled in State University of New York at Albany, graduating in 2006 with a bachelor of arts in journalism. Career

Swish Beverages

Ostrovsky is a co-founder of Swish Beverages, [5] which launched White Girl Rosé in 2015, [6] followed by the Babe family of sparkling canned wines. [7] In June 2019, it was announced that Anheuser-Busch InBev had acquired Swish Beverages, marking the brewer's largest wine investment to date. [8]

Social media

In 2011, Ostrovsky started an Instagram account with the handle "TheFatJewish". [2] [9] The account went viral in 2013 after Ostrovsky posted a video parodying SoulCycle, in which he led a spin class for homeless people on Citi Bikes parked on the street. [10] [11] In 2013, his Instagram account was suspended due to inappropriate content. In response, he organized a rally held outside Instagram's New York office. The protest was live-streamed on Vice.com, and his account was restored after 15 minutes. [2] [12] In 2014 The New York Times wrote that "he has parlayed a profane sense of humor that mocks the tropes of social-media culture and the hipsters who propagate them; an apparent affection for pot, pets and grandparents; and his own slovenly, outlandish physical appearance… into a huge web following." [4] Time magazine named Ostrovsky to its 2015 list of The 30 Most Influential People on the Internet. [13] As of December 2022, he had over 10 million followers on Instagram. [14] [15]

Ostrovsky has been hired to do product placement in his social media posts by companies including Burger King, Virgin Mobile, Apple, Budweiser, Weight Watchers, and Stella Artois. [2] [3] In 2015 he signed on as a spokesperson for Seamless. [16]

Film, television, and commercials

In 2009, Ostrovsky was hired as an entertainment reporter interviewing celebrities on The Daily 10 on E! He later hosted the rap interview web series An Intimate Conversation. [10] [11] He sold a show parodying the Williamsburg, Brooklyn hipster culture to Amazon in 2013, which went unproduced. [4] In 2014, he signed a deal to develop a scripted series for Comedy Central, based on his life. [4] He signed with Creative Artists Agency in 2015, [17] and that year began making regular appearances on Bloomberg News, [2] starred in a Bud Light commercial that aired during Super Bowl XLIX, [2] and appeared in the music video for DNCE's "Cake by the Ocean", as well as "Boys" by Charli XCX. He has appeared as himself in numerous reality television series, including 3AM [4] and The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills . [14] He has also played supporting roles in several films, including the teen comedy Status Update , starring Ross Lynch and Olivia Holt. [18] He was featured in a 2017 ad campaign for Malibu Rum. [19] He appears in the documentary The American Meme , which premiered at the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival. [20]

Modeling and fashion

In June 2012, Ostrovsky signed a modeling contract with One Management. [2] [21] He claims to be the world's first male plus-size model. [22] He appeared in a photo spread in Inked magazine's May 2015 issue, [23] [24] and was featured on the covers of the magazines treats! in 2016 [25] and Nude in 2017. [26]

At New York Fashion Week on September 16, 2015, his Dad Fashion Show debuted his collection of men's apparel. [16] [27]

Book

Ostrovsky formerly hosted a radio show on Apple Music Beats 1 called Money, Pizza, Respect. [17] The book of the same name, a collection of personal essays and images, was published by Grand Central Publishing in 2015. [2] [11] The book's cover parodies the cover of Walter Isaacson's 2011 biography Steve Jobs . [11]

Music

While at SUNY Albany, Ostrovsky was a member of the hip hop trio Team Facelift, where he first started going by the name Fat Jew. [4] [28] He has said that the moniker was inspired by one of his counselors at Eisner Camp and by Screw magazine publisher Al Goldstein. [29] Team Facelift formed in 2004, signed with Duck Down Records and released the album Mixed Emotions in 2006. [10] They broke up in 2010. [10]

In September 2016, Ostrovsky announced his Major Lazer tribute band Major Behavior, formed with DJ Maachew Bentley and billed as the world's first EDM tribute band. Major Behavior toured in 2016 as a part of Ostrovsky's IRL Tour. [30] [31] For the second IRL Tour in 2017, Major Behavior toured with Dillon Francis, RL Grime and Party Favor. [32] [33] Major Behavior was joined onstage by Major Lazer's Diplo during a May 2017 performance in Chicago. [31] In 2018, Ostrovsky hosted a radio show called Major Behavior on Diplo's Revolution, an electronic music channel on SiriusXM. [34]

Controversy

In 2015, Ostrovsky was accused of posting screenshots of other comedians' jokes on Instagram and Twitter without their permission, and with the credits cropped out. [35] [36] After several stories were published about this behavior, Ostrovsky edited his past posts to credit the authors of the jokes. [3] [37]

Personal life

Ostrovsky is an ordained minister and has officiated many wedding ceremonies, including a spontaneous wedding at Nikki Beach in Miami in December 2017. [38]

They were founded in 2008 by Diplo and Switch, with Switch leaving after three years in 2011. He was then replaced by both Jillionaire and Walshy Fire. In June 2019, Jillionaire left the group and was replaced by Ape Drums. Their music spans numerous genres, mixing reggae with dancehall, reggaeton, soca, house and moombahton.

Horst Christian Simco, known professionally as Riff Raff, is an American rapper from Katy, Texas. He was originally managed by Swishahouse co-founder OG Ron C in 2011. After initially signing with rapper Soulja Boy's record label Stacks on Deck Entertainment, Simco signed with producer Diplo's record label Mad Decent to release his debut studio album, Neon Icon (2014). Despite lukewarm critical and commercial response, it mildly entered the Billboard 200 along with his second album Peach Panther (2016), which was released by Warner Records. Prior to its release, Simco entered a US$4 million joint partnership with Stampede Management and BMG for his Neon Nation label and production company. The joint deal fell apart in the wake of legal disputes with the publication of the 2012 film Spring Breakers.

"Bubble Butt" is a song by American electronic dance music trio Major Lazer featuring American singer-songwriter Bruno Mars and American rappers Tyga and Mystic from the trio's second studio album, Free the Universe (2013). It was written by Major Lazer members Diplo and Switch alongside the featured artists. The production was handled by Major Lazer and Valentino Khan. The remix was released as the album's fourth single on May 24, 2013, for digital download and appears on the album's extended version. The remix version also features verses from American rapper 2 Chainz. Musically, it is an electronic dance, hip hop, and dancehall track with lyrics implying that girls twerk and show off their giant buttocks.

"Unapologetic Bitch" is a song recorded by American singer and songwriter Madonna for her thirteenth studio album, Rebel Heart (2015). It was written by Madonna, Thomas Wesley Pentz, Shelco Garcia, Bryan Orellana, Maureen McDonald and Toby Gad, with production being done by Madonna, Garcia & Teenwolf, BV, Diplo and Ariel Rechtshaid. The song's demo was leaked to the internet in December 2014, with twelve other tracks from the album. Its final version was released on December 20, 2014, with five other tracks on the iTunes store, as "an early Christmas gift" to avoid more leakage. The song was conceived while Madonna was in the studio with Diplo, who worked with the singer on more than eight songs for the album.

<i>Major Lazer</i> (TV series) American adult animation series

Major Lazer is an American adult animated television series based on the electronic music group of the same name, created by DJ and record producer Diplo with Ferry Gouw and Kevin Kusatsu. It premiered on FXX on April 16, 2015, as part of their Animation Domination High-Def (ADHD) block. After Stone Quackers, Major Lazer is the second ADHD original series to be aired on the channel after FOX had stopped its broadcast of the block itself.

The subsequent mix tapes that the Black Chiney collective of DJs, engineers and MCs would develop were the training ground for Walshy to become a remix producer.

<i>Music Is the Weapon</i> 2020 studio album by Major Lazer

Music Is the Weapon is the fourth studio album by American electronic band Major Lazer, released on October 23, 2020, via Mad Decent. It is Major lazer's first album in five years since Peace Is the Mission (2015). First announced in 2015, many conflicting statements have been made about the album, with the latest reports being that it will be the final Major Lazer album. It was later announced in 2019 that the album would instead be titled Lazerism, but the name was later changed back to the original title. It is the first album to be released after Jillionaire left the group and was replaced by Ape Drums. A deluxe edition of the album titled Music Is the Weapon (Reloaded) was released on March 26, 2021.
