Judo at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro took place from 6 to 12 August at the Carioca Arena 2 inside the Barra Olympic Park in Barra da Tijuca. Around 386 judoka competed in 14 events (seven each for both men and women). [1]
Similar to 2012 format, qualification was based on the world ranking list prepared by International Judo Federation as of May 30, 2016. A total of 252 athletes directly qualified through the ranking with only the top 22 men or top 14 women in each division, ensuring that each NOC was subjected to a limit of one judoka per division. [2] [3]
There were two sessions of competition on each day of the 2016 Olympic Judo program. The first session (Elimination & Quarterfinal) was conducted from 10:00 to 13:00 BRT, and the second session (repechage, semifinal, Bronze medal and Gold medal) was conducted from 15:30 to 18:10 BRT.

Majlinda Kelmendi is a Kosovan-Albanian former judoka and judo coach.
Qualification for Judo at the 2012 Summer Olympics was based on the world ranking list prepared by the International Judo Federation ("IJF") on 10 May 2012. The top 22 men or 14 women from the world rankings in each division qualify, subject to a limit of 1 judoka per National Olympic Committee ("NOC") per division. Further continental quotas also qualify subject to an overall limit of 1 judoka per NOC and 2 judokas per division from each continent. The qualification is allocated to the athlete.
Judo was a sport at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, and featured around 393 judoka competing in 15 events, seven each for both men and women as well as a new mixed team event. The 2020 Summer Olympics were postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the judo competitions were held in July 2021 at Nippon Budokan.
The 2014 World Judo Championships were held in Chelyabinsk, Russia, from 25 to 31 August 2014, in the Traktor Ice Arena. Each participating country was permitted to present a total of 18 men and women judokas to participate in the 14 weight categories, but no more than two judokas from the same country were allowed to fight in the same category.
