Kalaripayattu is an Indian martial art developed in present-day Kerala in the southwestern coast of the Indian subcontinent. It is featured in several films, television, literature, video games, comics and other media. [1]

Kalaripayattu is an Indian martial art that originated in Kerala, a state on the southwestern coast of India, during the 11th–12th century CE.
Silambam is an old Indian martial art originating in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. This style is mentioned in Tamil Sangam literature. The World Silambam Association is the official international body of Silambam.
The Malayali people are a Dravidian ethnolinguistic group originating from the present-day state of Kerala & Union Territory of Lakshadweep in India, occupying its southwestern Malabar coast. They form the majority of the population in Kerala and Lakshadweep. They are predominantly native speakers of the Malayalam language, one of the eleven classical languages of India. The state of Kerala was created in 1956 through the States Reorganisation Act. Prior to that, since the 1800s existed the Kingdom of Travancore, the Kingdom of Cochin, Malabar District, and South Canara of the British India. The Malabar District was annexed by the British through the Third Mysore War (1790–92) from Tipu Sultan. Before that, the Malabar District was under various kingdoms including the Zamorins of Calicut, Kingdom of Tanur, Arakkal kingdom, Kolathunadu, Valluvanad, and Palakkad Rajas.
Cheerappanchira is an ancient noble Ezhava family renowned for its Kalari in Muhamma, Alappuzha District. According to legend, Lord Ayyappan came here to learn Kalaripayattu. A. K. Gopalan married Susheela Gopalan from the cheerappanchira tharawad. C. K. Chandrappan also hails from this tharawad.

Unniyarcha is a legendary warrior and heroine from the 16th century, mentioned in the Vadakkan Pattukal, a set of historical ballads from northern Kerala, a state in southwestern India. She was a member of a Thiyyar community family called Puthooram Veed in Kadathanad. Her father's name was Kannappa Chekavar. She is believed to have lived in the northern part of Kerala during the 16th century. She is a popular character in Kerala's folklore and is remembered for her valour and skills in Kerala's native martial art, Kalaripayattu. According to legend, Unniyarcha was mostly known for her deadly skill with the whip-like urumi, a unique type of sword that originates from Kerala. Like most traditional Kalaripayattu practitioners, she began training at the kalari at the age of seven.
Chavutti Thirumal, literally meaning "foot pressure" in the Malayalam language and also known as "foot/rope massage", is a traditional Indian massage technique developed by the Kalari Martial Artists of Kerala India (Kalaripayattu), and it is thought to be approximately two thousand years old. The Kalaripayattu not only trained in battle but also developed a range of healing modalities known as Kalari Chikitsa, which comprises various massage techniques; Chavutti Thirumal, Marma Massage (Uzhichil), and the application of medicinal herbal oils.

Kottackkal Kanaran Gurukkal (1850–1941), was a Kalaripayattu gurukkal, who contributed to the revival or Kalarippayattu from after British ban of Kalaripayattu. His contributions to the preservation of Kalaripayattu has earned him the moniker, "Dronacharya of Kalaripayattu". Kanaran Gurukkal was born in a Chekavar Thiyyar Tharavad, a large Landlord family near Mukkali, Vadakara, Kozhikode. He was unmarried and lived a life fully devoted to the preservation of Kalaripayattu
For the action, we did a two-week workshop with a Kalaripayattu troupe from Kerala and a Thang-Ta troupe from Manipur — both of which represent very diverse martial art forms. We put them together on a mountaintop for two weeks and made them fight each other. What we got were results that I wouldn't even hope to achieve if I was using live-action actors.
