The 2022 New York gubernatorial election took place on November 8, 2022, to elect the governor and lieutenant governor of New York. Kathy Hochul ascended to the governorship in August 2021, upon Andrew Cuomo's resignation following allegations of sexual harassment. She sought a full term as governor. She appointed Brian Benjamin to the position of lieutenant governor and planned to run alongside him until he too resigned in April 2022. Congressman Antonio Delgado was appointed to replace Benjamin as lieutenant governor. Hochul defeated Jumaane Williams and Tom Suozzi in the Democratic primary for governor, while Delgado defeated Ana Maria Archila and Diana Reyna in the Democratic primary for lieutenant governor.

The 2024 New York State Assembly election was held on November 5, 2024. This election coincided with elections for U.S. Senate, U.S. House of Representatives, the U.S. presidential election, and state senate, among others. Districts for this election were redrawn pursuant to court order in Nichols v. Hochul, though the lines passed by the Independent Redistricting Commission and the state legislature on April 28, 2023, were nearly identical to the 2022 districts. Democrats have held a majority in the New York State Assembly since 1975.

The John R. Lewis Voting Rights Act of New York (NYVRA) is a State Voting Rights Act (SVRA) modeled after the federal Voting Rights Act that is designed to prevent racial voter suppression and discrimination. It is named after the late civil rights activist and Congressman John Lewis. The act prohibits voter suppression, including vote dilution, voter intimidation, voter deception, and voter obstruction. It also establishes preclearance requirements for certain jurisdictions as well as expanded requirements for jurisdictions with a certain number of adult citizens with limited English proficiency.
