Leon Rayon Johnson (born 8 August 1987),is a Guyanese born cricketer who plays as a right handed middle order batsman. He has featured for the West Indies,Guyana and Guyana Amazon Warriors in his career. Captaining both the West Indies at youth level and Guyana,Johnson is tied with Tamar Lambert of Jamaica as the most successful captain in West Indian first class cricket tournaments. [1] [2]
Johnson made his first class debut for Guyana in the 2003/04 season when he played in two first class matches,scoring just four runs from 3 innings. He did not feature in Guyana's first-class team for the next three seasons. [3] He made his list A debut in the 2007/08 season. [4]
In the 2007/08 domestic season,Johnson scored 427 runs at an average of 42.70 from 6 matches for Guyana in the Carib Beer Series. [3] [5] He fell six runs short of his maiden first-class century on 7 March 2008 when he edged a wide delivery from off-spinner Shirley Clarke against Combined Campuses and Colleges. [6] The innings was his highest score of the season.
Johnson was the leading run-scorer in the 2015–16 Regional Four Day Competition,scoring 807 runs from ten matches. [7]
In October 2018,in the first semi-final match of the 2018–19 Regional Super50,Johnson scored his first century in List A cricket,helping Guyana to beat Jamaica by one wicket and progress to the final. [8] In October 2019,he was named as the captain of Guyana's squad for the 2019–20 Regional Super50 tournament. [9] In February 2020,in the 2019–20 West Indies Championship,Johnson scored his 6,000 run in first-class cricket. [10]
Before representing the West Indies at senior level,Johnson was part of the West Indies under-19 team and played in seven youth One Day Internationals. he scored 30 runs at an average of 30.00 with a high score of 29* and took nine wickets at 27.44 with his slow bowling with best bowling figures of 3/24. [11] Johnson captained the under-19 side at the 2006 under-19 World Cup; [12] amongst his performances was an innings of 83 against South Africa to help his team secure a place in the next round of the competition. Consistent performances in the Carib Beer Series led to Johnson's selection for the tri-series involving Bermuda and Canada. [5] He made his international debut –along with Brendan Nash and Kemar Roach –in a One Day International match against Bermuda. Johnson scored 27 runs off 28 balls before being caught out off the spin bowling of Delyone Borden as the West Indies won by six wickets. [15] Johnson scored his first ODI half century on 22 August 2008. He scored 51 off 77 balls in a 128-run stand with Xavier Marshall who in the same innings broke the record for number of sixes hit in an ODI as West Indies beat Canada by 49 runs. [16] In the final against Canada,Johnson was out to debutant Balaji Rao for one run from nine balls as the West Indies won by seven wickets. [17]
In November 2008,the ODI squad to tour Pakistan was announced,with Johnson as one of the members. John Dyson,the West Indies coach,stated that Johnson's performance against Canada and Bermuda had shown he was ready to perform against leading cricket teams such as Pakistan. [18] On the same day,it was announced that Johnson was one of four players –along with Lionel Baker,Brendan Nash,and Kemar Roach –without a Test cap to be named in the 15-man squad selected to tour New Zealand for a Test series. [18] However,Johnson did not play in the series. [19]
He made his Test debut in September 2014 against Bangladesh at Beausejour Stadium in Gros Islet where he scored 66 in the first innings and then 41 runs in second. [20]
He is a married father of three children. Johnson along with fellow cricketer Steven Jacobs,also owns a construction company by the name of First Change Builders Inc. [21]
Devon Sheldon Smith is a former cricketer who featured as an opening or top order left-handed batsman. He played for the West Indies and for the Windward Islands in regional tournaments. Smith is also,with a sum of 11,321 runs,the highest runscorer in the history of West Indian first class cricket competitions.
Denesh Ramdin is a former Trinidadian cricketer who plays as a right-handed wicketkeeper-batsman. Ramdin formerly captained the West Indies,Guyana Amazon Warriors,Trinidad and Tobago and the Combined Campuses and Colleges. He was a member of the West Indies team that won both the 2012 T20 World Cup and the 2016 T20 World Cup.
Sewnarine Chattergoon is a Guyanese cricketer who made his début for the West Indies cricket team against Zimbabwe on their 2006 tour.
Sunil Dhaniram is a former Canadian cricketer and a former captain of the national team,who played ODIs and T20Is. He formerly played for Guyana from 1993 to 1995. He made his Canadian debut on 2 October 2003 playing against the Windward Islands. He made his ODI debut for Canada on 16 May 2006 against Zimbabwe,and has played 44 ODIs in his career. He has also played for Canada in seven ICC Intercontinental Cup games,and represented them in the 2007 Cricket World Cup.
Brendan Paul Nash is a Jamaican Australian former professional cricketer who played Test and One Day International cricket for West Indies. He played first-class cricket for Jamaica,Queensland and Kent.
Lionel Sionne Baker is a West Indian former cricketer who has played first-class cricket for the Leeward Islands. He is the first person from Montserrat to have represented the West Indies at Test cricket.
Jonathan Lyndon Carter is a Barbadian cricketer who currently plays for Barbados. He is a big-hitting left-handed batsman who also bowls right-arm medium pace. He made his international debut for the West Indies in January 2015.
Tagenarine Brandon Chanderpaul is a Guyanese cricketer who plays for Guyana in first-class cricket. He is a left-hand opening batsman. He made his international debut for the West Indies cricket team in November 2022. He is the eldest son of West Indies batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul. Nicholas Pooran is a Trinidadian cricketer who currently plays for the West Indies cricket team in limited overs cricket,and he is an occasional captain of the limited overs formats. He also plays for Trinidad and Tobago in West Indian domestic matches and for Lucknow Super Giants in IPL. He made his international debut for the West Indies in September 2016. In May 2022,Pooran was named as the captain of the West Indies team for limited overs cricket. In November 2022,he stepped down as the limited overs captain of the West Indies team. Shai Diego Hope is a Barbadian cricketer,who plays as a wicketkeeper/batsman for the West Indies cricket team. He is also the current ODI captain of the Windies. In June 2018,he was named the Men's Cricketer of the Year,Test Cricketer of the Year and the ODI Cricketer of the Year at the annual Cricket West Indies' Awards. The following year,he was named the CWI ODI Player of the Year. He is generally regarded as one of the best ODI batsmen in the contemporary cricketing world. Hope has also twice been named,for both 2020 and 2022,in the ICC ODI Team of the Year.
