Linum dolomiticum, also known as dolomite flax, [2] is a perennial plant in the genus of Linum . [3]

Habitat

Linum dolomitcum only grows in temperate biomes such as Hungary, where it is natively found. [4] It occurs on sloped ground with thin soil and high amounts of sunlight. The population is considered stable even though its numbers have been decreasing slowly due to high trampling rates. [1]

Flax Flowering plant in the family Linaceae

Flax, also known as common flax or linseed, is a flowering plant, Linum usitatissimum, in the family Linaceae. It is cultivated as a food and fiber crop in regions of the world with temperate climates. Textiles made from flax are known in English as linen and are traditionally used for bed sheets, underclothes, and table linen. Its oil is known as linseed oil. In addition to referring to the plant, the word "flax" may refer to the unspun fibers of the flax plant. The plant species is known only as a cultivated plant and appears to have been domesticated just once from the wild species Linum bienne, called pale flax. The plants called "flax" in New Zealand are, by contrast, members of the genus Phormium.

Linum Genus of flowering plants

Linum (flax) is a genus of approximately 200 species in the flowering plant family Linaceae. They are native to temperate and subtropical regions of the world. The genus includes the common flax, the bast fibre of which is used to produce linen and the seeds to produce linseed oil.

Linaceae is a family of flowering plants. The family is cosmopolitan, and includes about 250 species in 14 genera, classified into two subfamilies: the Linoideae and Hugonioideae. Leaves of the Linaceae are always simple; arrangement varies from alternate to opposite or whorled. The hermaphroditic, actinomorphic flowers are pentameric or, very rarely, tetrameric.

Founder crops Original agricultural crops

The founder crops or primary domesticates are a group of flowering plants that were domesticated by early farming communities in Southwest Asia and went on to form the basis of agricultural economies across Eurasia. As originally defined by Daniel Zohary and Maria Hopf, they consisted of three cereals, four pulses, and flax. Subsequent research has indicated that many other species could be considered founder crops. These species were amongst the first domesticated plants in the world.

Nagykovácsi is small town located in Budakeszi District, in the western part of Pest county, central Hungary. It is situated some 15 km (9 mi) north-west of the centre of Budapest, in a valley. According to the 2011 census, the population amounted to 7095, though this figure does not include individuals who own property as a secondary residence in the town. Nagykovácsi today attracts tourists and new residents alike, due to its proximity to the capital city, attractive and peaceful setting, surrounding by hills and forests. Some of the nearby areas have been designated conservation areas—Budai Tájvédelmi Körzet —in order to protect several of its rare species of flora. Its location has contributed to the town's development in recent decade. The American International School of Budapest chose Nagykovácsi as the site for its new campus in 2000.

Linum cratericola, the Floreana Flax, is a species of plant in the Linaceae family. It was first discovered in 1966 by Uno Eliasson. Between 1981 and 1997 it was relatively unseen, but a population of 13 individuals was rediscovered at one of the original locations. It is endemic to Ecuador, and is critically endangered. Since, the population has recovered to 400, after protection against goats and feral donkeys was created using fences.

Linum grandiflorum Species of flowering plant

Linum grandiflorum is a species of flax known by several common names, including flowering flax, red flax, scarlet flax, and crimson flax. It is native to Algeria, but it is known elsewhere in Northern Africa, Southern Europe and in several locations in North America as an introduced species. It is an annual herb producing an erect, branching stem lined with waxy, lance-shaped leaves 1 to 2 centimeters long. The inflorescence bears flowers on pedicels several centimeters long. The flower has 5 red petals each up to 3 centimeters long and stamens tipped with anthers bearing light blue pollen. It can on occasion be found as a casual well outside its normal established range; records from the British Isles, for example, are reasonably frequent but, grown as an annual, it rarely persists for more than one season.
