Augustana University is a private Lutheran university in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The university was called Augustana College and Seminary from 1860 to 1918, Augustana College and Normal School from 1918 to 1926, and Augustana College from 1926 to 2015. Established in 1889, the Lutheran Normal School merged with Augustana in 1918.

Canton is a city in and the county seat of Lincoln County, South Dakota, United States. Canton is located 20 minutes south of Sioux Falls in southeastern South Dakota. Canton is nestled in the rolling hills of the Sioux Valley, providing an abundance of recreational activities with the Big Sioux River bordering the eastern side, Newton Hills State Park to the south, and Lake Alvin to the north. The city was named by Norwegian settler and former legislator James M. Wahl. The population was 3,066 as of the 2020 census.

Sioux Falls is the most populous city in the U.S. state of South Dakota and the 121st-most populous city in the United States. It is the county seat of Minnehaha County and also extends into northern Lincoln County to the south, which continues up to the Iowa state line. The population was 192,517 at the 2020 census, and in 2022, its estimated population was 202,078. According to city officials, the estimated population had grown to 213,891 as of early 2024. The Sioux Falls metro area accounts for more than 30% of the state's population. Chartered in 1856 on the banks of the Big Sioux River, the city is situated in the rolling hills at the junction of interstates 29 and 90.

Augustana University is a private Lutheran university in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The university identifies 1860 as the year of its founding, the same as its Rock Island, Illinois, Swedish-heritage sister school, Augustana College. It derives its name from the Confessio Augustana, or Augsburg Confession, a foundational document of Lutheranism. Until September 2015, the university was known as Augustana College.

The North Dakota Fighting Hawks are the athletic teams that represent the University of North Dakota (UND), located in the city of Grand Forks, North Dakota. The Fighting Hawks compete at the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I level as a member of the Summit League. With 17 varsity teams, North Dakota is best known for its Ice Hockey team and American Football team. North Dakota's main rivalries are with the North Dakota State Bison and the Minnesota Golden Gophers.

The Morningside College Historic District, which includes most of the campus, is on the National Register of Historic Places. Morningside College officially became Morningside University on June 1, 2021.

Joseph N. "Smokey Joe" Salem is an American former college football player and coach. He served as the head football coach at the University of South Dakota (1966–1974), Northern Arizona University (1975–1978), and the University of Minnesota (1979–1983), compiling a career head coaching record of 96–91–3. Salem was most recently the quarterbacks coach at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, a position he held from 2006 to 2009.

Lester Andrew Josephson was an American football running back in the National Football League for the Los Angeles Rams. He played college football at Augustana College.

James M. Wahl was a pioneer Norwegian American settler in South Dakota. He served as the first legislator of Lincoln County, South Dakota in the Dakota Territorial Legislature. Wahl named the city of Canton, South Dakota.

Daniel Paul Ahlers is an American businessman and politician who was the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate in South Dakota in the 2020 election, which he lost to Republican incumbent Mike Rounds. Ahlers was a Democratic member of the South Dakota House of Representatives and of the South Dakota Senate (2008–10), representing District 25, which encompasses Dell Rapids and areas north and northeast of Sioux Falls.

Herbert Arthur Krause was an American historian, author and college professor. He was born and educated in Minnesota and South Dakota, where he taught and wrote. He was the author of novels, plays, poems, essays, and reviews. He also worked towards preservation of cultural heritage.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Frank McCormick (American football)</span> American football player (1894–1976)

Frank G. McCormick was an American football player and coach. He was the first South Dakotan to play professional football. He played from 1920 to 1921 with the Akron Pros and the Cincinnati Celts of the American Professional Football Association (AFCA)—the league changed its name to the National Football League (NFL) in 1922. Originally a guard, Frank was made a wingback by the Pros. He won an AFPA championship with Akron in 1920.

The Augustana Vikings are the athletic teams that represent Augustana University, located in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, in NCAA Division II intercollegiate sports. The Vikings compete as members of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference for all 14 varsity sports. The Vikings joined the NSIC from the North Central Conference, which folded in 2008.

Joel A. Swisher was an American college football coach and athletics administrator. He served as the head football coach at Dakota State University (1973–1976), Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota (1977–1980), Adams State College (1982–1983), and Jamestown College (1992–1994), compiling a career college football head coaching record of 65–55–4. Swisher was also the athletic director at Dakota State from 1974 to 1977.

Harold Theodore Spitznagel was an American architect from South Dakota. Spitznagel was best known for residential and institutional architecture, including the original Mount Rushmore visitor center. His styles included Prairie School, Art Deco, and Moderne architecture. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, was posthumously inducted into the South Dakota Hall of Fame, and has been called the "foremost 20th-century architect" of the state of South Dakota.

Robert Geering Burns was an American football player and coach. He served as the head football coach at Augustana College—now known as Augustana University—in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, from 1956 to 1961 and the University of South Dakota in 1962, compiling a career college football coaching record of 29–29–2. He died in November 2000 at the age of 80.

Brad Salem is an American college football coach and former player. He is the tight ends coach at Memphis. He has previously been an assistant coach at Luther, South Dakota, his alma mater Augustana University, and Michigan State.

Jim Glogowski is an American college football coach. He is the head football coach for the University of Sioux Falls, a position he has held since 2023. He also was the head coach for the Simpson Storm football team from 2008 to 2015. He also coached for South Dakota, Augustana (SD), Allegheny, Clarion, and Minnesota State. He played college football for South Dakota as a strong safety and outside linebacker.

Michael Aldrich is an American football coach. He was the head coach for the Sioux Falls Storm of the National Indoor Football League (NIFL) from 2001 to 2002. He was also the head football coach for Augustana University in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, from 2010 to 2012 and Minot State University from 2017 to 2022. He previously coached for St. Olaf, College of the Sequoias, Cal Lutheran, Louisville, Wayne State (NE), and Southwest Minnesota State. He played college football for St. Olaf.
