Beginning with the chart dated October 20, 2012, the chart has followed the methodology of the Billboard Hot 100 by incorporating digital download sales, streaming data, and radio airplay of rock songs over all formats. From that time until mid-2020, only the performance of core rock songs, including those with an "alternative bent", were tabulated and ranked for the chart. With the chart dated June 13, 2020, Billboard revamped the chart to permit a broader selection of songs considered alternative "hybrids" with other genres and renamed it to Hot Rock & Alternative Songs.

Parker Yancey McCollum is an American Americana and country singer-songwriter based in Texas. The owner of PYM Music, he released his first single and EP in 2013; his debut album The Limestone Kid was released on February 24, 2015. The Austin Chronicle gave the release 3.5/5 stars, writing that "it's too early to declare The Limestone Kid debut of the year, but it's already one to beat," and comparing McCollum's music to Charlie Robison's. McCollum and his backing band announced a 2015 tour of Texas in support of the album, performing at events such as RedGorilla Music Fest. McCollum released the EP Probably Wrong: Session One on July 7, 2017, and followed it with Probably Wrong: Session Two on September 8, 2017. The full Probably Wrong album was released on November 10, 2017. His major-label debut album Gold Chain Cowboy was released July 30, 2021.

Traveller is the debut studio album by American singer-songwriter Chris Stapleton. The album was produced by Dave Cobb and Stapleton, and was released on May 5, 2015, through Mercury Nashville.

Mexico Español Airplay is a record chart published weekly by Billboard magazine for Spanish language singles released in Mexico. According to Billboard's electronic database, the first chart was published on January 17, 2009, with the track "Lo Que Yo Sé de Ti" by Mexican band Ha*Ash. In 2011, fellow Mexican duo Jesse & Joy reached the top of the chart with their single "¡Corre!", the first of their eight number-one singles in the chart, the most for any band. "¡Corre!" also won the Latin Grammy Awards for Record of the Year and Song of the Year in 2012. Starting on December 1, 2012, Mexican singer Thalía spent 10 non-consecutive weeks at number-one with "Manías", the first single from the album Habítame Siempre, which won the Lo Nuestro Award for Pop Album of the Year. "Hoy Tengo Ganas de Ti" by Mexican artist Alejandro Fernández and American singer Christina Aguilera reached number-one in 2013, and also peaked at number four in Spain.
