The Clemson Tigers football team of Clemson University has had 277 players drafted into the National Football League (NFL) since the league began holding drafts in 1936. [1] [A 1] Each NFL franchise seeks to add new players through the annual NFL Draft. The draft rules were last updated in 2009. The team with the worst record the previous year picks first, the next-worst team second, and so on. Teams that did not make the playoffs are ordered by their regular-season record, with any remaining ties broken by strength of schedule. Playoff participants are sequenced after non-playoff teams, based on their round of elimination (wild card, division, conference, and Super Bowl). [3]

Before the merger agreements in 1966, the American Football League (AFL) operated in direct competition with the NFL and held a separate draft. This led to a massive bidding war over top prospects between the two leagues, along with the subsequent drafting of the same player in each draft. As part of the merger agreement on June 8, 1966, the two leagues held a multiple round "Common Draft". Once the AFL officially merged with the NFL in 1970, the "Common Draft" simply became the NFL Draft. [2] [4] [5]

The 2021 NFL draft was the only draft where a Tiger was drafted first overall with quarterback Trevor Lawrence. Thirty-eight Tigers have been drafted in the first round of the NFL Draft, with the most recent being Myles Murphy and Bryan Bresee in 2023. The single first round of the NFL Draft with the most Tigers selected was 2019 with three players; while 1979, 1982, 2015, 2017, 2020, 2021, 2023 saw two players go in the first round. The most Tigers selected in a single NFL Draft is nine, in 1983 and 2016.

Of the Tigers selected in the NFL Draft, twenty-two have been selected to a Pro Bowl, and twenty-six share a combined thirty-two Super Bowl championship rings. [6]

The Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Giants have drafted the most Tigers, each with seventeen. Clemson has had at least one player selected by 30 NFL franchises since 2003. The New England Patriots haven't drafted a Tiger since 1991, while only the Carolina Panthers have never drafted a Tiger. [6]

John Henry Johnson American gridiron football player (1929–2011)

John Henry Johnson was an American professional football player who was a running back. He was known for his excellence at the fullback position as both a runner and a blocker. His first professional stint was in Canada in the Western Interprovincial Football Union for one season with the Calgary Stampeders. He then played in the National Football League (NFL) for the San Francisco 49ers, Detroit Lions, and Pittsburgh Steelers before spending his final season in the American Football League (AFL) with the Houston Oilers. Commonly referred to as simply John Henry, an allusion to the folk hero of the same name, Johnson was a tough and tenacious player who performed at a high level well into the tail end of his career.

Thomas Arthur Keating was an American professional football defensive tackle. He played college football for the Michigan Wolverines from 1961 to 1963 and played 12 seasons in the American Football League (AFL) and National Football League (NFL) from 1964 to 1975. He was an AFL All-Star in 1966 and 1967, a key to the 1967 Oakland Raiders' defensive line that led the team to a 13–1 record and the 1967 AFL Championship, and was considered "the premier tackle in the old American Football League". He was known for his use of a distinctive four-point stance in which he lined up with both hands on the ground.

The 1984 Houston Oilers season was the 25th season overall and 15th with the league. The team improved upon their previous season's output of 2–14, winning three games, but failed to qualify for the playoffs for the fourth consecutive season. With hopes of improving the offense the Oilers won the bidding war to sign CFL star and future Hall of Fame quarterback Warren Moon. However, with Earl Campbell in full decline, the Oilers decided to trade him to the Saints after a 1–5 start. The move would leave a gaping hole at running back, but it was the defense that was a greater weak spot as the Oilers finished with a 3–13 record, allowing 457 points on the season.
