The country of Indonesia has experienced several tornadoes, most recently in January 2026.

Climatology and background

A tornado refers to a violently rotating column of air that reaches the ground, which can be among the most destructive of all atmospheric phenomena. ^[1] In Indonesia, such events are called "angin puting beliung". ^[2] Many believed that Indonesia is safe from tornadoes due to the mountains protecting them, but this myth has been disproven few times. ^[3]

Events

• December 7, 1815 - What was described as violent tornado destroyed a home in Surabaya, killing one and injuring four other occupants of the house. This tornado was considered as the first tornado to hit Indonesia. ^[4]
• December 3, 1834 - A strong tornado struck Ambarawa And Temanggung, causing 170+ houses damaged, damaged crops and trees, and killing 6 fatalities and "many" Injuries reported. Rated F2 by Ayanami Blue. ^{[5] [6]}
• October 26, 1860 - A strong tornado struck Kadu, West Java, this tornado caused some extensive damage. houses were torn into pieces, and trees were uprooted, no fatalities or Injuries reported. rated F2 unofficialy by Ayanami Blue. ^{[7] [8]}
• February 27, 1913 - A strong tornado struck the plantation area of Ciumbuleuit, Bandung during the Dutch Occupation. The tornado left the walls of factories toppled along with heavy wooden blocks tossed near the administrator house. Many homes belonging to the crews were destroyed/damaged, no casualties were reported despite the heavy damage. ^[9]
• January 1922 - What was probably a tornado struck areas in East Bandung, cutting communication network but no casualties were reported. Lack of other details made it hard to determine whether or not a tornado had occurred. ^[10]
• October 11, 1933 - Significant tornado tore through parts of Rancaekek (Rantja-Ekek), Bandung during the Dutch Occupation. The tornado killed one and destroyed 17 homes, unroofing 30 homes and downing many trees. ^[11]
• November 11, 1938 - A strong tornado struck Ciparay, Bandung causing nine warehouses in a market to collapse, leaving many injuries while damaging numerous homes. The tornado was accompanied with constant lightning, two residents were struck by the lightning. ^[12]
• July 7, 1954 - A strong tornado hit Cibaregbeg, Sukabumi destroying 35 homes and two schools, four electrical poles were snapped like straws as the result of this tornado and no fatalities or injuries were confirmed. ^[13]
• November 1956 - A strong tornado struck village of Menawan in Grobogan, Central Java. 16 homes were completely destroyed and 29 others were severely damaged, two people were killed by this tornado. ^[14]
• November 1983 - A tornado swept away three homes and leaving five others with wall and roof damage in a settlement located in Pesisir Selatan Regency, West Sumatra. ^{[15] [16]}
• June 29, 1985 - A strong tornado tore through the village of Lebung, Musi Banyuasin, Sumatra. The tornado destroyed/damaged mosques, schools and 220 homes. No casualties were reported from this tornado. ^[17]
• February 18, 2007 - An anti-cyclonic tornado struck the Lempuyangan Area in Yogyakarta. Reaching 70 km/h and over 1,000 building were damaged but mostly losing theirs roof, and dozens of large trees were uprooted. The tornado formed just nine months after the 2006 Yogyakarta earthquake and when the tornado struck Yogyakarta again, many residents were still living in temporary shelters or partially reconstructed homes, making the sudden windstorm a source of extreme panic. But thankfully there were no fatalities reported. this tornado is known as id:Lesus Lempuyangan ^[18]
• February 24, 2012 - A violent, deadly tornado struck Wette'e & other villages in Sidrap, South Sulawesi killing 4 people. This tornado leveled some houses and semi debarked trees, About 57 homes were damaged or destroyed ^[19]
• December 7, 2012 - A strong mesocyclonic tornado hit the area of sleman, yogyakarta, this tornado damaged over 519 houses, but no injuries and fatalities reported ^[20]
• December 11, 2013 - A photogenic cone tornado touched down in Denpasar, Bali. Several homes were damaged along with billboards and few other buildings, a nearby radar revealed a hook echo associated with this tornado. ^[21]
• December 14, 2014 - On 17:00 WIB, A violent tornado struck Cibiru, Panyileukan, Cinambo And Ujung Berung, over 700 houses were damaged, and a factory was damaged, and over 70 trees were uprooted, and this tornado caused 1 fatality due to a falling tree. ^[22]
• October 12, 2016 - A tornadic waterspout moved ashore and caused damage in Pangadaran, killing one person and damaging several houses. ^[23]
• November 26, 2016 - A damaging tornado touched down in Sidrap Sulawesi, killing one person and injuring two others. 20 houses were damaged or destroyed, including 6 houses that were largely destroyed or flattened to the ground, 7 houses with significant damage, and 7 other houses that had minor damage. ^[23]
• November 22, 2017 - A destructive tornado occurred in a densely populated area of Sidoarjo Regency in East Java, causing damage to 600 homes, with some homes sustaining major damage including roofs and exterior walls ripped off. 35 people were injured by the tornado. ^[24]
• December 30, 2018 - A tornado hit area of Cirebon, Indonesia, this tornado damaged 165 houses, caused 9 injuries and 1 fatality. ^[25]
• December 31, 2017 - A very strong tornado struck villages of Bojongnangka, Tambakrejo in Pemalang city, the tornado formed in bojongnangka, the tornado caused extreme damage. 5 buildings were slabbed, some walls in houses collapsed, and trees were uprooted, and the tornado moved to, Tambak Rejo, but the tornado got weaker, trees were damaged and roofs were ripped off, this tornado caused 21 injuries, but no fatalities reported. ^[26]
• January 11–12, 2019 - Three tornadoes hit West Java, Indonesia. The first tornado struck Karawang with unknown intensity, damaging 21 to 25 homes in East Kopo Village and another 10 homes in Tegaljaya Village. One person was injured during this tornado. The second and third tornadoes struck Rancaekek, Bandung and damaged more than 640 houses, injuring two people. On January 12, a tornado struck Sukabumi damaging 89 homes. ^{[27] [28] [29] [30]}
• May 20, 2020 - A destructive QLCS tornado occurred in Tulang Bawang regency, killing two people and leaving six others injured. Several houses were destroyed or collapsed and many trees were downed. A total of 66 homes were badly damaged or destroyed and 179 others sustained minor damage. The tornado itself was spawned along the leading edge of a squall line of severe thunderstorms that was moving through the area. ^[31]
• December 15, 2020 - A strong, fast moving tornado struck Sangatta, this tornado caused damage to houses, and trees, damaging 20-27 houses, and caused 1 Injury, and this tornado attached a metal roof to a tree in sangatta. ^[32]
• January 2, 2021 - A tornado touched down in Slangit Village within the Cirebon Regency, flattening three small houses, and destroying or heavily damaging eight others. The tornado also downed several trees, some of which landed on houses and caused minor damage. ^[33]
• March 28, 2021 - A strong multi-vortex tornado hit Cimenyan in the Bandung Regency, causing significant damage to several homes, businesses, and many trees, injuring eight people ^{[34] [35]}
• April 3, 2021 - A narrow tornado touched down in Sumenep Regency, causing damage in and around the village of Pinggir Papas in the Kalianget District. Three people were injured by the tornado, which damaged 18 houses ^[36]
• January 2, 2023 - A QLCS Nocturnal tornado struck Tenggarong, specifically on Jalan Stadion Timur, Panji Village. The incident occurred around 6:30 PM. The stadium's roof collapsed, which had recently been renovated, even though the corrugated iron was still new. Besides the stadium, other areas were also affected, including Jelawat, Triu, Km 3 of route 2, Km 7 of the old Loa Kulu route, and Bukit Biru. ^[37]

• January 13, 2023 - A Violent Tornado Struck The Town Of Paseh Sumedang, This Vortex Damaged 12 Homes But Mostly Hit Rural Areas. ^[38]
• November 13, 2023 - On The Monday In the afternoon, a tornado struck the Samboja kuala area of Kutai Kertanegara Regency, East Kalimantan.The situation in the area looked extremely tense. Roofs of buildings near the location where the video was taken were seen flying in circles. this tornado damaged School, House, And the school bus terminal, No one was injured. ^[39]

• February 4, 2024 - 2 Squall Lines merged and created a embedded supercell near Prambon, And then, the supercell moved to Prambon and created a destructive, deadly tornado, this tornado caused damage to 44-100 houses, walls, houses were collapsed, trees were uprooted, And some roofs were ripped off, Over 2 people were injured and 1 person died because he was hit by a roof. ^[40]
• February 21, 2024 - A tornado touched down and struck Jatinangor, Sumedang and parts of Rancaekek, Bandung in West Java, injuring 33 people, and damaging several buildings. ^[2]
• March 17, 2025 - A violent nocturnal tornado struck village of Telanjung In Bekasi, this tornado struck at 21:00 WIB, this tornado caused damage too houses & school roofs, collapsed a BTS Tower and flipped a heavy car for 100 meters, no fatalities or Injuries reported. ^[41]
• November 16, 2025 - A tornadic supercell forms a weak tornado in Langensari, Banjar, this tornado damaged roofs and no injuries or fatalities reported. ^[42]
• January 8, 2026 - 2 Anti-Cyclonic tornadoes happened in indonesia, the first tornado struck Juanda International Airport, the tornado uprooted some trees, damaging some roofs, and lifts/moved cars In a parking lot, the second tornado struck Ule Ateng, damaging 3 houses. ^{[43] [44]}
• March 6, 2026 - A long tracked tornado (From area of Kotabaru Parahyangan to Cimahi) damaged some houses and trees in Kotabaru Parahyangan, this tornado then moved to Ngamprah, causing roofs to be ripped off, trees were uprooted, then the tornado moved to Cimahi, causing similar damage , this tornado traveled 5-6 Miles In just 5-10 minutes, this tornado damaged 129 buildings, 4-5 people were injured by this tornado. ^[45]
• March 11, 2026 - A short lived but powerful tornado struck Muara, Cirebon, damaging at least 242 houses and several schools in its path, leaving many structures with torn-off roofs. ^[46]
