The Ambassador of the Republic of Austria to Mexico is the Republic of Austria's foremost diplomatic representative in Mexico. As head of Austria's diplomatic mission there, the ambassador is the official representative of the president and government of Austria to the President and the Federal government of Mexico. The position has the rank and status of an Ambassador Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary and the embassy is located in Mexico City.
The governments of Antonio López de Santa Anna and Emperor Ferdinand I recognized each other in 1842. On 10 April 1864, Archduke Maximilian, the younger brother of Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria, accepted the imperial crown offered to him by Mexico. Franz Joseph I sent Guido von Thun und Hohenstein to Maximilian I and, thus, recognized his government. Maximilian's government was subsequently overthrown, and Maximilian himself was sentenced to death by court martial and executed in 1867. There were no diplomatic relations for more than 30 years.
Following an agreement between Austria-Hungary and Mexico on 23 March 1901, diplomatic relations were resumed.
During the Federal State dictatorship under Kurt Schuschnigg, there was only an embassy without an ambassador; with the "Anschluss" by Nazi Germany on 13 March 1938, the representation became obsolete. Mexico was then the only state in the world to officially condemn the annexation of Austria before the League of Nations; in 1956, Vienna named its Mexikoplatz in gratitude for this.
After the war, diplomatic relations were restored and the embassy was reoccupied in 1949. From the 1950s onwards, the ambassador to Mexico was also accredited to Cuba and the Central American republics (Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama). [1]
The Austrian Embassy is now located at Sierra Tarahumara 420, colonia Lomas de Chapultepec district. The embassy also houses the Mexican Cultural Forum.
In addition to the embassy, there are four consular representations (honorary consulates) of Austria in Mexico: Cancún, Guadalajara, Monterrey, and Tijuana. The consulate in Mérida is temporarily closed (as of January 2020). [2]
Diplomatic relations between Austria and Bulgaria were established in 1879. Austria has an embassy in Sofia and an honorary consulate in Burgas while Bulgaria has an embassy in Vienna and an honorary consulate in Salzburg.
Foreign relations exist between Austria and Finland. Austria recognised Finland on 13 January 1918. Both countries established diplomatic relations on 19 July 1918. Austria has an embassy in Helsinki and 6 honorary consulates. Finland has an embassy in Vienna and 8 honorary consulates . Both countries are full members of the European Union and of the Council of Europe. The two countries became members of the European Union in 1995.
The Embassy of Austria in Washington, D.C., is the primary diplomatic mission of the Republic of Austria to the United States and represent the interests of Austria and Austrian citizens in the U.S. It is located at 3524 International Court, NW, Washington, D.C., in a neighborhood primarily occupied by diplomatic missions. Its immediate neighbors are the Embassy of Slovakia, the Embassy of the United Arab Emirates, and the Embassy of Egypt. The chancery building houses and operates several services and offices relevant to the pursuit of its mission in the United States.
Foreign relations exist between Austria and the United Kingdom, and have been positive and friendly since Austrian independence in 1955. Both nations are members of the Council of Europe. The two nations share close economic and technological ties, and cooperate in a variety of fields, particularly when the UK was a member of the European Union and also more recently in condemning Russia's invasion of Ukraine. They have also agreed to cooperate on mutual interests over matters involving security in the Balkans, including regarding Kosovo, Albania and Serbia and furthermore to work together on countering subversive Russian activity in the region. Austria is a European Union member and the United Kingdom is a former European Union member. the United Kingdom is a member of NATO. Austria instead is not a member of NATO.
The 1955 Austrian State Treaty ended the four-power occupation and recognized Austria as an independent and sovereign state. In October 1955, the Federal Assembly passed a constitutional law in which "Austria declares of her own free will her perpetual neutrality." The second section of this law stated that "in all future times Austria will not join any military alliances and will not permit the establishment of any foreign military bases on her territory." Since then, Austria has shaped its foreign policy on the basis of neutrality.
Austria–India relations or Indo–Austrian relations are the international relations that exist between Austria and India.
The Embassy of Austria in Islamabad is the diplomatic mission of Austria to Pakistan. It is located at 7-A, Street 21 in Sector F-8/2, Islamabad. Austria and Pakistan established diplomatic relations in 1956.
Diplomatic relations exist between the Republic of Austria and the Federative Republic of Brazil. Both nations are members of the United Nations.
