List of ships at Dunkirk

Last updated

This list consists of all major [lower-alpha 1] naval and merchant ships involved in Operation Dynamo, the evacuation of allied troops from the Dunkirk area from 26 May to 4 June 1940. The operation was administered by the British Admiralty with the Royal Navy providing the bulk of large vessels. They were accompanied by several other vessels of allied navies, most notably the French, as well as many merchant ships, some previously requisitioned and converted for naval use, and others called into service from their civilian roles due to the urgency of the situation. Hundreds of small privately owned craft, known as the Little Ships of Dunkirk, not listed here, were crucial in ferrying from the beaches to these larger vessels, whilst the majority of troops embarked directly at Dunkirk harbour.

Legend

Name (Pennant Number) Ships are listed in alphabetical order disregarding any ship prefixes, which are not used by the French or Belgians. Pennant numbers are provided in brackets where known. These were generally displayed on the ship's hull, though not on destroyer leaders such as HMS Montrose pennant D1. In May–June 1940 the Royal Navy was in the process of re-allocating the pennant numbers of many of its destroyers, in most cases the number remained the same whilst the initial letter (known as the flag superior) changed, with "D" and "F" becoming "I" and "G" respectively.

Flag The ensign flown by each vessel to indicate its nationality. The civil ensigns of France and Belgium, as well as the naval ensign of France, are the same as their national flag, although with differing dimensions. The United Kingdom uses the White Ensign for all commissioned naval vessels and the Red Ensign for civilian vessels (collectively known as the Merchant Navy). The Blue Ensign was used for non-naval vessels in Government service, for example hospital ships and troopships. There is some evidence they flew the Admiralty Ensign, now known as the Government Service Ensign.[ citation needed ]

Tonnage Different measures are commonly used for the size of commercial and naval vessels: Gross register tonnage (GRT) is the total internal volume of commercial vessels, including those requisitioned and converted for naval use, whilst displacement is the weight of water displaced by the hull, used for naval vessels such as destroyers, minesweepers and sloops. These are therefore not comparable.

Notes

 1. Attempts have been made to list all commercial vessels over 100 GRT according to Lloyd's Register, and corresponding naval ships, who were present in the Dunkirk area during the dates of Operation Dynamo. Vessels were exposed to the same risks: air attack, shore artillery, mines, collisions with wrecks and grounding in the crowded channels. Therefore, those who supported the operation in other ways, such as landing supplies of water, food and ammunition for the troops, carrying out anti-submarine patrols, minesweeping, assisting crippled vessels or picking up survivors from the water, have been included regardless of whether they were reported to have transported troops.
 2. torpilleur in French classification
 3. Effectively a 600 ton displacement destroyer
 4. SS Clan Macalister (1930), built as a heavy-lift cargo liner and requisitioned from Clan Line of Glasgow, was the largest merchant vessel used during the evacuation. It was sunk with loss of 18 crew by enemy aircraft off the beach on 29 May. As she sank, she happened to settle evenly to the bottom in shallow water with the decks above water, and thereafter served as an unintentional decoy target for German Stuka dive-bombers. The British Admiralty later estimated the ship saved over a million pounds (sterling) worth of shipping.[ citation needed ]
 5. "Captain Destroyers" - the commander of a destroyer flotilla

The Dunkirk evacuation, codenamed Operation Dynamo and also known as the Miracle of Dunkirk, or just Dunkirk, was the evacuation of more than 338,000 Allied soldiers during the Second World War from the beaches and harbour of Dunkirk, in the north of France, between 26 May and 4 June 1940. The operation commenced after large numbers of Belgian, British, and French troops were cut off and surrounded by German troops during the six-week Battle of France. In a speech to the House of Commons, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill called this "a colossal military disaster", saying "the whole root and core and brain of the British Army" had been stranded at Dunkirk and seemed about to perish or be captured. In his "We shall fight on the beaches" speech on 4 June, he hailed their rescue as a "miracle of deliverance".

The British Royal Navy towed the destroyer to the United Kingdom and commandeered the vessel following the French surrender in 1940. They transferred Ouragan to the Polish Navy which kept the destroyer in service for less than a year. In 1941, the Polish Navy transferred the destroyer to the Free French Naval Forces, which in turn, transferred Ouragan back to the Royal Navy in 1943. Ouragan saw no further action and was broken up for scrap in 1949.

Aigle-class destroyer

The Aigle-class destroyers (contre-torpilleurs) were built for the French navy during the 1920s. They were very similar to the previous Guepard class, the only difference being improved machinery with higher pressure boilers, offering an additional 0.5 knots of speed and a new model 138 mm gun with a sliding breech block giving a higher rate of fire. The ships were named after birds.

Calcutta served during the Norwegian Campaign and the evacuation from Dunkirk in 1940. She was used to escort allied convoys across the Mediterranean and was sunk on 1 June 1941 by Luftwaffe aircraft off Alexandria, Egypt.

After that time, she bombarded advancing German forces near the northern French coast and took part in the Dunkirk evacuation. After the surrender of France, she was seized by the British in July and turned over to the Free French.

HMS Saladin (1919) Royal Navy S class destroyer

HMS Saladin was an Admiralty S-class destroyer that served with the Royal Navy in the Second World War. The S class was a development of the R class created during the First World War as a cheaper alternative to the V and W class. Launched in 1919 soon after the Armistice, the ship was commissioned into the Reserve Fleet and had an uneventful career until 1939. Upgraded shortly after the start of the Second World War with greater anti-aircraft and anti-submarine capabilities, Saladin served as an escort, usually for convoys of merchant ships, for the majority of the war. The ship was damaged by German aircraft while assisting in the Dunkirk evacuation in 1940 and involved in escorting the landing parties for the Normandy landings in 1944. After surviving the war, Saladin was retired and handed over to be broken up in 1947.
