Luke Greenbank (born 17 September 1997) is an English professional swimmer who specialises in backstroke. A medalist in the 200 metre backstroke at the Olympic Games and the World and European championships, he also swam the first leg in the 2019 World and 2020 European Championship gold medal-winning Great Britain medley relay teams. He won a silver medal as lead-off for Great Britain in the 4 x 100 metre medley relay for men at the 2020 Summer Olympics. He won a gold medal as lead-off for England in the heats of the 4 x 100 metre medley relay for men at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Greenbank has won gold medals as part of the 4 × 100 m Men's Medley Relay at the European, World Championships and Commonwealth Games. [1] [2] He won two gold medals in (200 m, 100 m backstroke) and breaking a new Junior World record in 200 m backstroke at the 2015 European Games, which doubled that year as the European Junior Swimming Championships. Greenbank has the unusual distinction of having won medals at the Commonwealth Games, European Championships, World Championships, European Games and Olympic Games, as well as a full set of junior medals (Youth Olympics, World Juniors and European Juniors).

Career

In 2014, at the 2014 European Junior Championships, Greenbank won gold medal in 200 m backstroke. He then competed at the 2014 Youth Olympics in Nanjing taking bronze in 200 m backstroke and gold in 4 × 100 m freestyle (with Duncan Scott, Miles Munro, Martyn Walton).

In June 2015, Greenbank competed at the inaugural 2015 European Games in Baku, He won 2 gold medals in (200 m, 100 m backstroke) and breaking a new Junior World record in 200 m backstroke at the 2015 European Games clocking in 1:56.89. [3] He also took silver medals in 4 × 100 m medley (with Duncan Scott, Charlie Attwood, Charlie Attwood) and in 4 × 100 m mixed medley.

On August 25–30, Greenbank won bronze in men's 100 backstroke at the 2015 World Junior Championships held in Singapore.

2018–2019

At the 2018 Commonwealth Games held at the Gold Coast, Australia, Greenbank won a silver in the 4 × 100 m medley with Adam Peaty, James Guy and Ben Proud. [4]

Greenbank won his first World Championships medal at the 2019 World Aquatics Championships held in Gwangju, South Korea. He finished third in the men's 200m backstroke, setting a personal best time. [5] He was part of the team in the men's 4 × 100 metre medley relay together with Adam Peaty, James Guy and Duncan Scott. He started the race in the backstroke leg, and the team finished in a European record time of three minutes, 28.10 seconds to beat the United States, and won their first gold medal in the event in the World Championships. [6]

Greenbank was one of the 2019 individual world championship medal-winners who were pre-selected for the postponed 2020 Tokyo Olympics. [7]

2020

At the 2020 European Championships held in Budapest in May 2021, Greenbank won a silver in 200 metre backstroke, [8] as well as a gold in the men's 4 x 100 m medley relay with Peaty, Guy and Scott. [2]

2022

In June 2022, at the 2022 World Aquatics Championships, he won the silver medal in the 200 metre backstroke with a time of 1:55.16, finishing less than seven-tenths of a second behind gold medalist Ryan Murphy of the United States and less than two-tenths of a second ahead of bronze medalist Shaine Casas of the United States. [9] [10] [11] He also won a bronze medal in the 4×100 metre medley relay, splitting a 53.81 to contribute to the final time of 3:31.31. [12] [13] [14]

Commonwealth The first day of swimming competition at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, Greenbank qualified for the semifinals of the 100 metre backstroke, ranking fourth in the preliminaries with a time of 54.55 seconds. [15] In the semifinals later in the day, he swam a 54.23 to qualify for the final ranking fifth. [16] On day two, he placed fifth in the final with a time of 54.29 seconds, finishing 0.51 seconds behind gold medalist Pieter Coetze of South Africa. [17] Three days later, he ranked as the overall fastest swimmer in the preliminaries of the 200 metre backstroke with a time of 1:56.33 and qualified for the final. [18] [19] He placed fifth in the final with a time of 1:56.98. [20] On day six of six, he swam the backstroke leg of the 4×100 metre medley relay in 54.28 seconds in the preliminaries, helping qualify the relay to the final ranking second in 3:35.88. [21] In the final, Brodie Williams substituted in for him and he won a gold medal for his efforts in the prelims when the finals relay placed first in 3:31.80. [22]

European Championships A little over one week later, at the 2022 European Aquatics Championships held in Rome, Greenbank ranked fourth in the prelims heats of the 200 metre backstroke with a time of 1:57.81 and qualified for the evening semifinals. [23] He swam a 1:57.07 in the semifinals, qualifying for the final ranking third. [24] [25] In the final, he won the bronze medal with a time of 1:56.15, finishing 0.53 seconds behind gold medalist Yohann Ndoye-Brouard of France. [26] [27] [28] [29] Five days later, on the final day of swimming competition, he helped placed fourth in the 4×100 metre medley relay, splitting a 54.28 for the backstroke leg of the relay to contribute to the final time of 3:33.60 and finishing 0.32 seconds behind the team from Austria that won the bronze medal. [30]

2024

After finishing second in the 200 metres backstroke at the 2024 Aquatics GB Swimming Championships, Greenbank recorded a time that met the British Consideration criteria for a place at the 2024 Summer Olympics. [31] He was subsequently named in the British team for the Olympics. [32]

Personal life

As of 2023, Greenbank is in a relationship with British swimmer Anna Hopkin. On September 5, Greenbank was reported as to getting into a fight with Hopkin's former partner, British swimmer Adam Peaty. [33]

In addition to further medals in those events, he has also reached the podium at both the World and European short-course championships. With 45 major medals at international championship meets, 19 at global level, he is one of the most decorated swimmers in British history.

Kylie Jacqueline Masse is a Canadian competitive swimmer. She is a four-time Olympic medallist, having tied for the bronze medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics in the 100 m backstroke and then won silver medals at the 2020 Summer Olympics in both the 100 m and 200 m backstroke and a bronze medal in the 4x100 m medley. Masse is a two-time world champion in the 100 m backstroke, breaking the eight year old world record in the process, which she held until July 2018. While winning her title in Budapest at the 2017 World Aquatics Championships she became the first Canadian woman to become a world champion in a swimming event. Corey Charles Garth Main is a New Zealand swimmer who qualified to compete at the 2016 Summer Olympics to be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in the men's 100 metre backstroke.

Kathleen Mary Dawson is a Scottish backstroke swimmer. She won gold at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in mixed 4 × 100 metre medley relay in a world record time. She is also the European champion at the 2020 Budapest Championships and holder of the European record in 100 m backstroke (58.08).

Georgia Coates is a British swimmer who won five medals at the 2015 European Games. She has been selected to compete for Great Britain at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Freya Ann Alexandra Anderson is a British swimmer, known primarily for her achievements as a freestyle sprinter, especially as a relay swimmer for Great Britain. Anderson achieved nine relay gold medals at three editions of the European Championships, including 5 golds in a single meet at the 2020 European Championships in Budapest, as well as two bronze medals at the Commonwealth Games and a bronze at the 2019 World Aquatics Championships. James Wilby is a British competitive swimmer who specialises in the breaststroke. Wilby is the 2018 Commonwealth Games champion in 200 metre breaststroke, the 2022 Commonwealth Games champion in 100 metre breaststroke, and the 2022 European champion in 200 metre breaststroke. He formed part of the Great Britain team that won World Championship gold in the men's 4 x 100 metre medley relay in 2019, and the England team that won the Commonwealth Games Men's 4 x 100 metre medley relay in 2014 and 2022.

Rebecca Meder is a South African swimmer. She is the African record holder in the 100 metre individual medley and the South African record holder in the long course and short course 200 metre individual medley. At the 2022 World Short Course Championships, she placed sixth in the final of the 100 metre individual medley. In the 200 metre individual medley at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, she placed fourth in the final. At the 2021 African Championships, she won 11 gold medals, six in individual events and five in relay events, swimming on the finals relay for each of the five relay events.

He is the 2022 World champion in the 100 metre backstroke and 2022 European champion in the 100 metre backstroke and 50 metre butterfly. In the 100 metre individual medley, he won the gold medal at the 2022 World Short Course Championships and the bronze medal at the 2021 World Short Course Championships. Joe Litchfield is a British swimmer. He has won gold medals as part of a team at the European Championship, and a team bronze at the World Championship. His older brother Max Litchfield is also a swimmer and he is the son of former professional footballer, Peter Litchfield.

Pieter Coetze is a South African swimmer. He is the African record holder in the long course and short course 100 metre backstroke and short course 50 metre backstroke. At the 2022 Commonwealth Games, he won the gold medal in the 100 metre backstroke, the silver medal in the 50 metre backstroke, and the bronze medal in the 200 metre backstroke. At the 2022 World Junior Championships, he competed in ten events, including winning the gold medal in the 200 metre backstroke, silver medals in the 50 metre backstroke, 100 metre backstroke, and the 4×100 metre medley relay, as well as a bronze medal in the 4×100 metre mixed medley relay.

Michele Lamberti is a competitive Italian swimmer. He is a former world record holder in the short course 4×50-metre medley relay. He currently holds the Italian record in the short course 50-metre backstroke.
