Lumbriculus variegatus Species of annelid worm

Lumbriculus variegatus, also known as the blackworm or California blackworm, is a species of worm inhabiting North America and Europe. It lives in shallow-water marshes, ponds, and swamps, feeding on microorganisms and organic material. The maximum length of a specimen is 10 cm. Worms raised in laboratory environment are slightly shorter, with 4 to 6 cm long bodies. An adult individual has approximately 150 to 250 1.5 mm wide segments, each of which has the ability to regenerate into a new individual when separated from the rest of the animal. In most populations, this is the primary mode of reproduction, and mature individuals are exceedingly rare; in large areas mature individuals have never been found.

Lumbriculus ambiguus was described by Holmquist in 1976, based on material collected in northern Alaska. Like L. genitosetosus, L. ambiguus was initially placed in the genus Thinodrilus along with L. inconstans, but this genus is generally not recognised today. Its genital characters vary greatly between individuals, but certain features appear to be constant.

Lumbriculus multiatriatus was described by Yamaguchi in 1937 from several specimens from Sakhalin and Hokkaidō. As the name suggests, it is distinguished from other Lumbriculus species by having four atria, as opposed to the one or two that is standard from the genus.

Lumbriculus mukoensis was described by Yamaguchi in 1953 from specimens collected at Mukō in Hyōgo Prefecture, Japan. It is distinguished from other Lumbriculus by the posterior location of the genital elements, and by its smaller body size. It has been proposed as a subspecies of Lumbriculus variegatus.

In solid mechanics, the Johnson–Holmquist damage model is used to model the mechanical behavior of damaged brittle materials, such as ceramics, rocks, and concrete, over a range of strain rates. Such materials usually have high compressive strength but low tensile strength and tend to exhibit progressive damage under load due to the growth of microfractures.
