Macronectes tinae is an extinct species of giant petrel from the Pliocene of New Zealand. Although clearly belonging to the genus Macronectes, this species was notably smaller and less robust than either of the modern forms, possibly due to its more ancestral nature or due to the warmer climate of its environment. Like modern giant petrels it likely scavenged and hunted, feeding on the carcasses of seals and penguins as well as the chicks of other seabirds.
The bones of Macronectes tinae were discovered in the marine sediments of the Pliocene Tangahoe Formation, located within the Whanganui Basin of New Zealand's North Island. Both the holotype specimen, a complete skull, as well as the paratype humerus, are kept at the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa. The fusion of the individual elements suggest that both belonged to adult individuals, however the distance between them makes it unlikely that they belonged to a single individual, instead representing two different birds.
The skull that serves as the type specimen was the favourite fossil of Tina King, partner of fossil collector Alastair Johnson. For this reason the species was named after her. [1]
The skull of M. tinae shows the characteristic bulbous beak tip known from modern species of giant petrel as well as the proportionally shortened nasal aperture. [1]
Although smaller than in other petrels, the nasal aperture of M. tinae is proportinally bigger than that of the two modern giant petrels. In fact, despite having an overall smaller skull the nasal aperture is of roughly equal total size as that of the extant species. The supraocciptal bone is shallower, only half to two thirds the depth of either modern species. However it is not certain how diagnostic this feature is, as it may also be the result of postmortem deformation. The same might account for the more prominent crista nuchalis transversa at the back of the head. [1]
The humerus appears to be the size of smaller Macronectes individuals and is proportionally less robust, with a shallower shaft. All condyles, although worn in the fossils, appear to resemble those of living petrels. The ventral epicondyle however might be better developed than in modern species and may extend further distally. This later assumption may again be the result of distortion during preservation. Regardless, the fact that the epicondyle is more pronounced is also seen in all other fulmarine petrels except for the two living Macronectes species. Another difference between M. tinae and modern giant petrels can be found in the shape of the fossa medialis brachialis. In the fossil species this fossa is elongated and almost fusiform, similar to what is seen in some specimens of Thalassoica , while modern giant petrels have a more circular fossa consistent with most other fulmarine petrels. Overall M. tinae shows similar but more gracile anatomy compared to the two modern species of giant petrel, the southern giant and northern giant petrel. This indicates that M. tinae was not just smaller but also not as bulky. [1]
With its similar morphology and relatively young age, it is assumed that Macronectes tinae was likely similar in lifestyle to the modern species of giant petrels. The reason for this species' less bulky build may be twofold. For one, it reflects the fact that giant petrels evolved from much smaller birds, as the genus' closest relatives are all much smaller than species in Macronectes. Furthermore, the difference in size may be related to the fact that M. tinae lived in warmer waters compared to the modern forms. This later explanation is however not ideal, as giant petrels are known to venture into warmer waters, especially in their youth.
Today giant petrels subsist themselves with a scavenging and hunting lifestyle, feeding on the carcasses found near seal or penguin colonies, feeding on chicks of other sea birds or hunting a variety of marine life including fish and cephalopods. Their dietary needs would be met by the fauna present in the Tangahoe Formation, which was home to the monk seal Eomonachus belegaerensis , the penguin Eudyptes atatu , an undescribed species of pelagornithid, the albatross Aldiomedes angustirostris and two smaller species of petrels. Giant petrels form a genus, Macronectes, from the family Procellariidae, which consists of two living and one extinct species. They are the largest birds in this family. The living species are restricted to the Southern Hemisphere, and though their distributions overlap significantly, with both species breeding on the Prince Edward Islands, Crozet Islands, Kerguelen Islands, Macquarie Island, and South Georgia, many southern giant petrels nest farther south, with colonies as far south as Antarctica. Giant petrels are extremely aggressive predators and scavengers, inspiring another common name, the stinker. South Sea whalers used to call them gluttons. They are the only member of their family that is capable of walking on land.
The northern giant petrel, also known as Hall's giant petrel, is a large, predatory seabird of the southern oceans. Its range overlaps broadly with the range of the related southern giant petrel, albeit slightly further to the north.
The southern giant petrel, also known as the Antarctic giant petrel, giant fulmar, stinker, and stinkpot, is a large seabird of the southern oceans. Its distribution overlaps broadly with the similar northern giant petrel, though it overall is centered slightly further south. Adults of the two species can be distinguished by the colour of their bill-tip: greenish in the southern and reddish in the northern.

The fulmarine petrels or fulmar-petrels are a distinct group of petrels within the family Procellariidae. They are the most variable of the four groups within the Procellariidae, differing greatly in size and biology. They do, however, have a unifying feature, their skull, and in particular their nasal tubes. They are predominantly found in the Southern Ocean with one species, the northern fulmar, ranging in the North Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.

Euthecodon is an extinct genus of long-snouted crocodile. It was common throughout much of Africa during the Neogene, with fossils being especially common in Kenya, Ethiopia, and Libya. Although superficially resembling that of gharials, the long snout was a trait developed independently from that of other crocodilians and suggests a diet of primarily fish. Euthecodon coexisted with a wide range of other crocodiles in the areas it inhabited before eventually going extinct during the Pleistocene.
Livyatan is an extinct genus of macroraptorial sperm whale containing one known species: L. melvillei. The genus name was inspired by the biblical sea monster Leviathan, and the species name by Herman Melville, the author of the famous novel Moby-Dick about a white bull sperm whale. It is mainly known from the Pisco Formation of Peru during the Tortonian stage of the Miocene epoch, about 9.9–8.9 million years ago (mya); however, finds of isolated teeth from other locations such as Chile, Argentina, United States (California), South Africa and Australia imply that either it or a close relative survived into the Pliocene, around 5 mya, and may have had a global presence. It was a member of a group of macroraptorial sperm whales and was probably an apex predator, preying on whales, seals and so forth. Characteristically of raptorial sperm whales, Livyatan had functional, enamel-coated teeth on the upper and lower jaws, as well as several features suitable for hunting large prey.
Pterodromoides is an extinct genus of fulmarine petrel dating from the Late Miocene. It contains a single species, P. minoricensis. Its fossil remains were first discovered at the Punta Nati palaeontological site on the island of Menorca in the Balearic archipelago of the western Mediterranean. An additional specimen from North Carolina, USA has also been referred to this species, suggesting it lived across the North Atlantic. It was described in 2001, with the authors justifying the creation of a new genus by the large orbitonasal opening and characters of the postcranial skeleton, despite the similarity of the cranial osteology to that of Pagodroma.
Pelecanoides miokuaka is an extinct species of diving petrel of New Zealand. Described in 2007, it is known only from a single humerus bone that was discovered from early Miocene sediments of the Manuherikia Group.
Macroeuphractus is a genus of extinct armadillos from the Late Miocene to Late Pliocene of South America. The genus is noted for its large size, with Macroeuphractus outesi being the largest non-pampathere or glyptodont armadillo discovered, as well as its specializations for carnivory, unique among all xenarthrans.
Indosinosuchus is a genus of teleosaurid neosuchian that lived during the Late Jurassic or Early Cretaceous in what is now Thailand. It contains two species, the type species I. potamosiamensis and I. kalasinensis, both recovered from the lower Phu Kradung Formation. It is unique among teleosauroids as it is the only named genus known from a freshwater environment, while most other members of the group are marine. Indosinosuchus is placed in the family Teleosauridae, but has a relatively robust skull that bears resemblance to members of the Machimosauridae. Biomechanical analysis of its mandible and teeth suggest that it would have had a substantial bite force comparable to animals like Lemmysuchus. The two Indosinosuchus species however differ in the speed at which they could open and close their jaws, impacting their respective ecology and possibly explaining how they coexisted in the same environment. All known specimens of this genus were recovered from a single locality, which has been interpreted as a mass death site, possibly caused by a drought or flash flood. The precise age of Indosinosuchus is unclear, as the vertebrate fossils of the Phu Kradung Formation support a Late Jurassic age, while palynological data suggests an Early Cretaceous (Berriasian) age.
