Bimala Prasad Chaliha was a Leader of Indian National Congress and a Freedom Fighter who was imprisoned at Jorhat Jail in 1942 for active participation in Mahatma Gandhi's Quit India Movement against the British Government. He was elected to the post of Chief Minister of Assam for Three Consecutive Terms, once from Badarpur Constituency and twice from Sonari Constituency. He was in office from 28 December 1957 to 6 November 1970. He was awarded Padma Vibhushan in 1971.

Hatsingimari is the headquarter of South Salmara-Mankachar District (Assam), India. Previously, it was the headquarter of South Salmara Mankachar Subdivision. On 26 January 2016, Assam's Chief Minister SriTarun Gogoi announced South Salmara-Mankachar as an administrative district along with other 4 districts. On 9 February 2016, the district was inaugurated. It has a population of 3445 people. It also has a Higher literacy rate of 77.73% as compared to the 73.72% of Assam.

He was reelected for the term from 1991 to 1996.

He served as member of the Lok Sabha representing Dhubri. He was elected to 7th, 10th and 11th Lok Sabha.

Charbari (Gazarikandi) is a village under Kathalbari and Kukurmara Gaon panchayat in Mankachar revenue circle, South Salmara-Mankachar district of Assam a north east state of India.
