The 13th Assam Legislative Assembly election was held in two phases on 4 and 11 April 2011 to elect members from 126 constituencies in Assam, India. The result was announced on 13 May. [1]

Contents

Bharatiya Janata Party was accused of turning the anti-immigrant feeling in Assam into a communal row but still failed miserably. [2] The election resulted in a landslide victory for the Indian National Congress swept the election and its incumbent Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi was sworn in for the third straight term. [3] AIUDF emerged as a key opposition party and won 18 of 126 seats. Tarun Gogoi became the second Chief Minister (the first was Bimala Prasad Chaliha) to be elected Chief Minister for the third consecutive term and formed his third ministry.

Barthakur is married to Radhika Barthakur of the Nehru-Gandhi family of India. He was appointed Advisor to the Chief Minister of Assam under the Congress Government. He was asked to resign when the BJP Government came to power in 2016.

Gaurav Gogoi is an Indian politician and social worker of Indian National Congress from Assam who is serving as the Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha since 2024. From 2020 till 2024, he served as the deputy leader of Indian National Congress parliamentary party under Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury. He is currently representing the Jorhat Lok Sabha Constituency in 18th Lok Sabha since 2024. He had represented the Kaliabor Constituency in the 16th Lok Sabha and the 17th Lok Sabha from 2014 till 2024, after which the constituency was abolished. He is the son of former Chief Minister of Assam Tarun Gogoi. He left his job at Airtel to join a Delhi-based NGO called Pravah in 2005.

Tarun Gogoi constituted his ministry for a second time on 21 May 2006. Gogoi had previously been Chief Minister since 2001. Following the 2006 Assam Legislative Assembly election, Gogoi became Chief Minister for a second time as he had formed his first ministry previously. The coalition government was supported by the Hagrama faction of the Bodoland People's Progressive Front, NCP and independents. There were 17 cabinet ministers and one minister of state, all of whom were either Congress or Independent.

Elections to the Assam Legislative Assembly were held in 2001 to elect members of 114 constituencies in Assam, India. The Indian National Congress won the popular vote and a majority of seats and Tarun Gogoi was appointed as the Chief Minister of Assam. The number of constituencies was set as 126, by the recommendation of the Delimitation Commission of India.
