The Thengal Kachari Autonomous Council (TKAC), is an autonomous district council for the Thengal Kachari people in the state of Assam, India. [2]
The council was created in 2005 by Thengal Kachari Autonomous Council Act, which was passed by the Assam Legislative Assembly. [3]
The council has 26 members of whom 22 are directly elected and 4 are appointed by the Governor of Assam on behalf of the central Government of India. The council elects a Chief Executive Councillor who nominates an executive committee. [3]
At the most recent election, held in January 2022; the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 14 seats, the Indian National Congress won 4, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) won 3 and one seat was won by an Independent. [4] The BJP went on to form a coalition executive with the AGP with Pratap Kachari as Chief Executive Councillor. [5]

Asom Gana Parishad is a political party in the state of Assam, India. The AGP was formed following the historic Assam Accord of 1985 and formally launched at the Golaghat Convention held from 13 to 14 October 1985 in Golaghat, which also allowed Prafulla Kumar Mahanta who was the youngest chief minister of the state to be elected. The AGP has formed government twice once in 1985 then again in 1996. The popularity of AGP surged in the late 1980s but declined in the 2000s. He has also served as the Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs, Government of India, from 2014 to 2016 and the Minister of State for Entrepreneurship and Skill Development from 2014 to 2014 and the member of the Lok Sabha from Lakhimpur from 2014 to 2016 and from Dibrugarh from 2004 to 2009. He was also the member of the Asom Gana Parishad from 2001 to 2011.

After Signing of M.O.U. between Government of India, Government of Assam and United People's Democratic Solidarity, it was renamed to Karbi Anglong Autonomous Territorial Council. It has administrative functions over two district, Karbi Anglong district and West Karbi Anglong district. Its headquarters is in Diphu, Karbi Anglong district. The total area of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council is 10,434 sq. km having a population of 961,275 as of 2011.

The 2021 Assam Legislative Assembly election was the 15th quinquennial legislative assembly election held in the Indian state of Assam from March 27 to April 6 in three phases, to elect 126 MLAs to the 15th Assam Legislative Assembly. The votes were counted and the result declared on Sunday, 2 May. The term of the previous Fourteenth Legislative Assembly of Assam ended on 31 May 2021.
