Marcus Ellis (born 14 September 1989) is a British badminton player. [1] He was the men's doubles champion in the English National Championships. [2] Ellis and Chris Langridge won a bronze medal in the men's doubles at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, also gold medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia. At the 2019 Minsk European Games, Ellis captured two gold medals; in the men's doubles with Langridge and in the mixed doubles event with Lauren Smith.
Marcus Ellis, the youngest son of Sheila and John Ellis, was born on 14 September 1989 in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. [3] He has an elder brother James. Ellis started playing badminton aged seven when his father took him to the Colne Valley Leisure Centre in Slaithwaite. [4]
Ellis was first educated at Clough Head Junior School in Huddersfield, before attending Colne Valley High School, a state comprehensive school in the village of Linthwaite. [5] He attended high school with Alex Smithies, now the goalkeeper for Huddersfield Town Football Club. [1] He then studied for 6 months at Huddersfield New College before deciding to move away from Huddersfield at the age of 17 so he may train at the National Badminton Centre in Milton Keynes. [4]
In the early years of his professional career, Ellis teamed up with a number of players in the doubles, such as Tom Wolfenden and Peter Mills in the men's doubles, and Gabby Adcock and Mariana Agathangelou in the mixed. [7] He won the men's doubles at the Denmark International in 2013 with Paul van Rietvelde. [8]
In September 2014, he teamed up with Chris Langridge. They won their first men's doubles title in December 2014 in the Italian Open, [9] and their first title in the English National Badminton Championships in February 2015, which they won again in 2016. They also won the Welsh International in 2015. [10] They were defeated in the 2016 European Championships in La Roche-sur-Yon in the semi-finals to gain a bronze. [11] They have also won medals in the European Team Championships – a silver in the Mixed Team in 2015, [12] and a bronze medal in the Men's Team in 2016. [13]
During the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio, Ellis and Langridge were ranked No. 22 in the world, but they managed to win a bronze, the first medal in badminton men's doubles won by a British team at the Olympics. [14]
In 2017, he won his first Grand Prix tournament title at the Dutch Open in the mixed doubles event with Lauren Smith. [15]
At the 2018 Commonwealth Games held on the Gold Coast, Australia, Ellis captured three medals – he won a gold in the men's doubles with Chris Langridge, which is England's first men's badminton double title at the Games in 40 years; [16] a silver in the mixed doubles with Lauren Smith; and also a bronze in the mixed team event. [17] [18] [19] At the 2018 European Championships held in Huelva, Spain, he finished in the semi-final, and settled for a bronze medal in the mixed doubles event with Smith after lose a match to Danish pair Mathias Christiansen and Christinna Pedersen in the rubber games. [20]
Ellis qualified to represent Great Britain at the 2019 European Games, played in the men's doubles with Chris Langridge and in the mixed doubles with Lauren Smith. Competed as the second seeds in the men's and mixed doubles event, he reached the finals in both events. [21] In the men's doubles, Ellis and Langridge managed to claim the gold medal after beat the top seeds from Denmark Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup Rasmussen in straight games 21–17, 21–10. [22] He secured his second gold in the mixed doubles with Smith after beat their teammates the top seeds Chris Adcock and Gabby Adcock with the score 21–14, 21–9. [23]
Ellis opened the 2020 season by achieved his biggest triumph as in just his second tournament of the season, he won his first Super 300 event in Thailand Masters partnered with Lauren Smith. [24] He and Smith then reached in to the quarter-finals of Spain Masters and semi finals of All England Open. In October, Ellis and Chris Langridge won the men's doubles title at the 2020 Denmark Open, became the first English men's doubles pair in 45 years to win the Denmark Open. [25]
Ellis competed at the 2021 European Championships in Kyiv, Ukraine, and won a silver medal in the mixed doubles with Smith and a bronze in the men's doubles with Langridge. [26] In July, he and Smith played at the 2020 Summer Olympics, but was eliminated in the quarter-finals. [27]
In 2022, Ellis competed at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England as mixed doubles second seed with his partner Lauren Smith. They progressed to the final, but lost to third seeded from Singapore Terry Hee and Jessica Tan, settled for the silver medal. [28] After the Commonwealth Games, Ellis had to withdraw for the next tournament due to a hip injury and planned surgery. [29]

Imogen Bankier is a businesswoman and former badminton player from Scotland. After starting playing the sport at the age of 9, Bankier won the national championships at every age level from Under 17 upwards. The highlight of her professional career was reaching the final of the mixed doubles at the 2011 World Championships in Wembley, London. She and her partner Chris Adcock were defeated in the match by the Chinese team of Zhang Nan and Zhao Yunlei.
Christopher Thomas Adcock is a retired English badminton player. Adcock is currently sponsored by Yonex and YC Sports and plays for the University of Nottingham-based NBL team. He entered the National team in 2006, and later won the boys' doubles and mixed team titles at the 2007 European Junior Championships. He was a World Championships medalists winning a silver in 2011 with Imogen Bankier and a bronze in 2017 with Gabby Adcock. Together with Gabby, he also won a silver medal at the 2007 World Junior Championships, and then claimed the gold medals at the Commonwealth Games in 2014 and 2018; and at the European Championships in 2017 and 2018.
Hong Wei is a Chinese professional badminton player. He competed at the 2016 Rio in the men's doubles event, and placed fourth after losing the bronze medal match to Great Britain pair Chris Langridge and Marcus Ellis.
Andrew Ellis is an English badminton player who specializes in doubles. He won the European individual bronze medals with Chris Adcock in 2012 and 2014. Ellis reached top 10 BWF ranking in the men's doubles event with Adcock in November 2013. He competed for England in the men's doubles and mixed team events at the 2014 Commonwealth Games where he won a silver medal in the team event.
Tan Wee Kiong is a Malaysian badminton player in the doubles event. He had a partnership with Goh V Shem, which began at the 2014 Thomas Cup. Together, Tan and Goh won the gold medal in the men's doubles and the mixed team event at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. They also won bronze at the 2014 Asian Games. In their Olympic debut at the 2016 Rio Olympics, they won the silver medal, becoming the first Malaysian pair to achieve such a feat since 1996. In November 2016, they reached a career-high ranking of world number 1, making them the fifth ever Malaysian men's doubles pair to do so, after Razif Sidek and Jalani Sidek, followed by Cheah Soon Kit and Yap Kim Hock, Chan Chong Ming and Chew Choon Eng, and Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong.
Goh V Shem is a Malaysian badminton player in the doubles event. He was partnered with Tan Wee Kiong after their outstanding performance at the 2014 Thomas Cup. Together, Goh and Tan won the gold medal for the men's doubles event at the 2014 Commonwealth Games as well as all their matches in the mixed team event, helping Malaysia retain the gold medal for the third consecutive time. They also won the bronze medal at the 2014 Asian Games and the silver medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics, thus making them the second ever Malaysian men's doubles pair to win the silver medal at the Olympic Games 20 years after the feat was achieved by Cheah Soon Kit and Yap Kim Hock in 1996 Atlanta. Goh and Tan are also the fifth Malaysian men's doubles pair to hold the world number 1 ranking after Razif Sidek and Jalani Sidek, followed by Cheah and Yap, Chan Chong Ming and Chew Choon Eng, and later on by Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong ever since official rankings were kept in the 80s.
Gabrielle Marie Adcock is an English retired badminton player.
Christopher Phillip Langridge is a retired British badminton player. He competed for England at the 2014 Commonwealth Games where he won three medals. He represented Great Britain at the 2016 Summer Olympics, and won a bronze medal in the men's doubles, partnered with Marcus Ellis. They also won gold medals at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and 2019 European Games.
Peter Mills is an English badminton player who specializes in doubles. He started playing badminton in Southwell Junior Badminton Club at age 8, and became the England national badminton team at age 19. In 2007, he won the European Junior Badminton Championships in the boys' doubles event with Chris Adcock. He competed for England in the men's doubles and mixed team events at the 2014 Commonwealth Games where he won a bronze and silver medal respectively.
Lauren Smith is an English badminton player. She competed for England in the women's doubles and mixed team events at the 2014 Commonwealth Games where she won a bronze and silver medal respectively. In 2016, she represented Great Britain at the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Chloe Francesca Hannah Birch is an English badminton player.
Kim Astrup Sørensen is a Danish badminton player. He was the men's doubles gold medalists at the 2018 European Championships and the 2023 European Games with his partner Anders Skaarup Rasmussen. He also won the bronze medal at the World Championships in 2021 and later a silver medal in 2023. Astrup joined the Denmark winning team at the 2016 Thomas Cup in Kunshan, China, where he and his teammates beating Indonesia 3–2 in the final. Together with Rasmussen, he reached a career high of World number 5 in September 2018.
Ben Lane is an English badminton player. He won the men's doubles silver medals at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, 2023 European Games, and also a bronze medal in the European Championships.
Jessica Tan Wei Han is a Singaporean badminton player. Together with Terry Hee, they won their first BWF World Tour title as a duo at the 2022 India Open. Tan along with Hee also won the gold medal in the mixed doubles event at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, a first for Singapore in that discipline at the Games. Jessica Tan and her husband Terry Hee were nominated for the Straits Times Singaporean of the Year Award 2022. Terry Hee and Jessica Tan are Singapore's first local-born mixed doubles duo to qualify for the Olympics, and will make their debut at the Paris Olympics 2024.
Terry Hee Yong Kai is a Singaporean badminton player. In mixed doubles with Jessica Tan, Hee won his first World Tour title at the 2022 India Open. Hee together with Jessica Tan also won the gold medal in the mixed doubles event at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, a first for Singapore in that discipline at the Games. Terry Hee and his wife Jessica Tan were nominated for the Straits Times Singaporean of the Year Award 2022. Terry Hee and Jessica Tan are Singapore's first local-born mixed doubles duo to qualify for the Olympics, and will make their debut at the Paris Olympics 2024.

A world champion and a double bronze medalist at the Olympic Games, he and his partner Soh Wooi Yik became the first ever world badminton champions from Malaysia after winning the men's doubles title at the 2022 World Championships. Together, they also won a gold medal at the 2019 SEA Games, a silver medal at the 2022 Asian Championships, as well as bronze medals at the 2020 Summer Olympics, 2022 Commonwealth Games, 2023 World Championships, 2022 Asian Games, 2024 Asian Championships, and 2024 Summer Olympics. Soh Wooi Yik is a Malaysian badminton player. A world champion and a double bronze medalist at the Olympic Games, he and his partner Aaron Chia became the first ever world badminton champions from Malaysia after winning the men's doubles title at the 2022 World Championships. Together, they also won a gold medal at the 2019 SEA Games, a silver medal at the 2022 Asian Championships, as well as bronze medals at the 2020 Summer Olympics, 2022 Commonwealth Games, 2023 World Championships 2022 Asian Games, 2024 Asian Championships, and 2024 Summer Olympics.
