Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 42 was a reserve aviation logistics support unit of the United States Marine Corps. They fell under the command of Marine Aircraft Group 42 and 4th Marine Aircraft Wing and were based at Naval Air Station Atlanta. MALS-42 provided direct support to VMFA-142 and HMLA-773 and Navy squadrons VAW-77 and VR-46 and indirect support to two tactical Marine squadrons HMLA-773 Det A and HMM-774. Due to a re-organization within Marine aviation, MALS-42 was deactivated in 2008. [1]

Mission

Provide aviation logistics support to MAG-42 in garrison and contingencies to include (1) intermediate-level aviation maintenance, (2) aviation ordnance, (3) aviation supply, and (4) management information systems. As a unit, MALS-42 is also tasked to support the Fleet Replacement Squadron (FRS) mission during major regional conflicts.

History

1990s

MALS-49 Detachment B was redesignated MALS-42 (-) on 18 June 1992. MALS-42 consists of a headquarters unit, MALS-42(-), located at NAS Atlanta, DET A located at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, DET B located at Naval Air Station Norfolk, and DET C located at Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base New Orleans, Louisiana. MALS-42 has provided aviation logistical support at CAX during annual training periods, conducted off-site training evolutions at MALS-14, MALS-26 and MALS-39. In 1996, MALS-42 was tasked to draft the Fleet Replacement Squadron (FRS) Plan under which a Reserve Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron (MALS) would be activated to replace an intermediate level maintenance squadron during a Major Regional Conflict (MRC).

Global War on Terror

MALS-42 was activated 13 February 2003 and assigned to 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing in order to execute the Fleet Replacement Squadron (FRS) Mission in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF). As a unit, MALS-42 remained activated until 12 February 2004. September 2004 found MALS-42 in receipt of orders to plan and execute the deployment of an MALS-42 detachment to Bagram Air Base, Afghanistan as part of HMLA-773 deployment in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF). As a whole three successive detachments supported combat operations until September 2005. On 29 August 2005, the squadron was called on to support humanitarian relief efforts in support of Hurricane Katrina. Forward deployed personnel participated forward for 30 days and continued to provide maintenance support up through 3 December 2005.

Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 773 (HMLA-773) is a United States Marine Corps helicopter squadron consisting of AH-1W SuperCobra attack helicopters and UH-1Y Huey utility helicopters. The squadron is based at Joint Base McGuire–Dix–Lakehurst, NJ and falls under the command of Marine Aircraft Group 49 (MAG-49) and the 4th Marine Aircraft Wing. Due to re-organization within Marine aviation, the squadron relocated to Joint Base MDL on July 1, 2016.

Marine Aircraft Group 41

Marine Aircraft Group 41 (MAG-41) is a United States Marine Corps reserve aviation unit based at Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base Fort Worth, Texas that is currently composed of one F/A-18A+ squadron, one KC-130T squadron, an aviation logistics squadron, as well as detachments from wing support and air control squadrons. Following decommissioning of Marine Aircraft Group 46 in 2009, MAG-41 also assumed command responsibility for the geographically separated Northrop F-5F aggressor squadron based at Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, Arizona and a Boeing Vertol CH-46 squadron HMM-764 based at Edwards Air Force Base, California. HMM-764 transitioned to the MV-22B in 2013 and relocated to MCAS Miramar.

Marine Aircraft Group 42 was a United States Marine Corps reserve aviation unit based at Naval Air Station Atlanta, Georgia. Due to a re-organization within Marine aviation, MAG-42 was deactivated on 21 June 2008.

A Marine expeditionary brigade (MEB) is a formation of the United States Marine Corps, a Marine air-ground task force of approximately 14,500 Marines and sailors constructed around a reinforced infantry regiment, a composite Marine aircraft group, a combat logistics regiment and a MEB command group. The MEB, commanded by a general officer, is task-organized to meet the requirements of a specific situation. It can function as part of a joint task force, as the lead echelon of the Marine expeditionary force (MEF), or alone. It varies in size and composition, and is larger than a Marine expeditionary unit (MEU) but smaller than a MEF. The MEB is capable of conducting missions across the full range of military operations.

HML-776

Marine Light Helicopter Squadron 776 (HMM-776) was a reserve helicopter squadron of the United States Marine Corps. The squadron was based at Naval Air Station Glenview, Illinois and fell under Marine Air Control Group 48 and the 4th Marine Aircraft Wing. HML-776 was deactivated on July 1, 1994.

They are currently based at Stewart Air National Guard Base in Newburgh, New York and fall under the command of Marine Aircraft Group 49 (MAG-49) and the 4th Marine Aircraft Wing. The squadron 49 is the only MALS in the 4th MAW with an active duty core of maintenance and aviation supply personnel. HMLA-467

Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 467 (HMLA-467) was a United States Marine Corps helicopter squadron consisting of AH-1W SuperCobra attack helicopters and UH-1Y Venom utility helicopters. The squadron, nicknamed the "Sabers", was based at Marine Corps Air Station New River, North Carolina and was under the command of Marine Aircraft Group 29 (MAG-29) and the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing. The squadron's aircraft markings are grey & white stripes on the aircraft tail to replicate the tail markings on a Diamondback Rattlesnake and the markings on the lighthouses in North Carolina.

Naval Air Force Atlantic aviation Type Commander for the United States Naval aviation units

Commander, Naval Air Force Atlantic is the aviation Type Commander (TYCOM) for the United States Naval aviation units operating primarily in the Atlantic under United States Fleet Forces Command. Type Commanders are in administrative control (ADCON), and in some cases operational control (OPCON) of certain types of assets assigned to the Pacific and Atlantic Fleets. AIRLANT is responsible for the material readiness, administration, training, and inspection of units/squadrons under their command, and for providing operationally ready air squadrons and aircraft carriers to the fleet.
