The James Madison Dukes are the intercollegiate athletics teams that represent James Madison University (JMU),in Harrisonburg,Virginia. The name "Dukes" is derived from Samuel Page Duke,the university's second president. The Dukes play as members of the Sun Belt Conference (SBC),which sponsors sports at the NCAA Division I level. In football,JMU participates in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) of Division I,formerly known as Division I-A. JMU was a charter member of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA),. The Dukes officially left the CAA and joined the SBC in 2022,participating in Division I FBS football and other sports sponsored by the conference.

Angela Tincher O'Brien is an American,former collegiate All-American,retired professional All-Star softball pitcher and coach. She most recently served as the pitching coach at Virginia Tech. She was a 2008 first-round draft selection for the NPF Akron Racers. She is a graduate of James River High School and a 2008 graduate of Virginia Tech. In 2013,she was hired as Virginia Tech's softball pitching coach where she owns numerous school records. She is the ACC career leader in wins,strikeouts,shutouts,innings pitched,strikeout ratio and no-hitters,while also ranking in several records for the NCAA Division I,where she is one of five pitchers to achieve 100 wins,1,000 strikeouts,an ERA under 1.00 and average double-digit strikeouts for her career.
Danielle Henderson is an American,former collegiate All-American,medal-winning Olympian,retired professional All-Star softball pitcher who is currently the head coach at UMass. Henderson was a starting pitcher for the UMass Minutewomen softball from 1996 to 1999. Henderson also played professionally in National Pro Fastpitch from 2004 to 2007,where she currently ranks top-10 in career strikeout ratio (6.8). Along with numerous school records,she is the Atlantic 10 Conference career leader in ERA,shutouts,perfect games (3) and WHIP. Henderson represented the United States at the 2000 Summer Olympics and won a gold medal.
Founded in 1970,the James Madison baseball program played at Long Field at Mauck Stadium through the end of the 2009 season. In 2010 they opened play at Eagle Field at Veterans Memorial Park,the school's new baseball and softball complex. The "Diamond Dukes," as the team is known,have compiled a 1092-670-8 all-time record and have made the NCAA tournament ten times,most recently in 2024. The Dukes compete in the Sun Belt Conference. Billy Sample is JMU's most famous baseball alumnus,who played in 862 career major league games with the Texas Rangers,New York Yankees,and Atlanta Braves. In the 2006 season,JMU had the top-two home run hitters in Division I. One of them,Kellen Kulbacki,placed in the top five in all three of the triple crown categories. Kulbacki received the 2006 National Player of the Year award as a sophomore. In 2008,the Dukes won their first CAA Championship defeating Towson University qualifying the team for the 2008 NCAA Division I baseball tournament hosted by North Carolina State University in Raleigh,NC. The Dukes also won the CAA Championship in 2011 defeating Old Dominion University qualifying the team for the 2011 NCAA Division I baseball tournament.
Stacey Lauren Nelson is an American,former college softball All-American pitcher. She played at Florida from 2006 to 2009,leading the University of Florida to its first Women's College World Series berth in 2008 and a national runner-up appearance in the 2009 Women's College World Series. Nelson was also the 13th pick in the 2009 National Pro Fastpitch's draft by the defunct Washington Glory. Nelson pitched for the United States women's national softball team in 2009 and 2010 before attending law school at Loyola Law School in Los Angeles. She is the Florida career record holder wins,ERA,shutouts and innings pitched. She also ranks all-time in several career categories in the Southeastern Conference and the NCAA Division I.
Danielle Elaine Lawrie is a Canadian,former collegiate All-American,medal-winning Olympian,professional All-Star softball pitcher and current sports commentator. Lawrie played college softball at Washington,in which she was part of the 2009 Women's College World Series championship team and was named Most Outstanding Player. Lawrie currently plays for the Canada women's national softball team,including during the 2008 Summer Olympics,and the 2020 Summer Olympics,where she won a bronze medal.
Katherine Burkhart is an American,former collegiate All-American,retired professional All-Star softball pitcher and softball coach. She played college softball at Arizona State,and won a national championship with the team in 2008 and was named Most Outstanding Player. Burkhart holds the career records in wins,strikeouts,perfect games,WHIP,innings pitched and strikeout ratio for the school. She also ranks in several career pitching categories and the top-10 for strikeouts and perfect games for both the Pac-12 Conference and the NCAA Division I. She has also pitched for the USA Softball team. She also helped remove snakes from a plane that was bound from Hawaii to Phoenix in 2023.
Keilani Johanna Ricketts Tumanuvao is an American softball pitcher for the Oklahoma City Spark of the Women's Professional Fastpitch (WPF). She played college softball at Oklahoma from 2010 to 2013,where she was the starting pitcher and helped to lead the Sooners to the national championship in 2013. As a member of the United States women's national softball team she won 2011 World Cup of Softball. Ricketts currently plays for the USSSA Pride in the National Pro Fastpitch. She is the Sooners career leader in wins and strikeouts. She also ranks for career records in both the Big 12 Conference and the NCAA Division I,where she is one three players to win 100 games with 1,000 strikeouts and hit 50 home runs.

He previously played for the Saskatchewan Roughriders and BC Lions of the Canadian Football League (CFL),Columbus Lions of American Indoor Football (AIF),DC Defenders of the XFL,and Pittsburgh Maulers and Philadelphia Stars of the United States Football League (USFL).

The 2017 NCAA Division I softball season, play of college softball in the United States organized by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) at the Division I level,began in February 2017. Odicci Alexander is an American professional and former collegiate All-American softball two-way pitcher for the USSSA Pride. She was the starting pitcher for James Madison University from 2017 to 2021,leading the team to their first-ever Women's College World Series in 2021 and making it to the semi-finals. After the 2021 season,Alexander was named Softball America Pitcher of the Year and was also nominated for an ESPY Award for best female college athlete. She most recently played in the Athletes Unlimited Softball where she won the 2023 championship as the top individual points leader.
Megan Ki'llani Faraimo is an American professional softball pitcher. She played college softball at UCLA from 2019 to 2023,where she was named a three-time All-American by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). As a sophomore in 2020,she was named Softball America Pitcher of the Year. Faraimo played in Athletes Unlimited Softball,where she named the 2023 Athletes Unlimited Rookie of the Year.
Georgina Louise Corrick is a British born,American raised professional softball player for Athletes Unlimited Softball. She played college softball for the South Florida Bulls. She is also a member of the Great Britain women's national softball team. In 2022,she was the first pitching Triple Crown winner in NCAA Division I history. In 2024,she was inducted into the British Softball Hall of Fame.
Danielle Lauren Williams is an American college softball player for the Northwestern Wildcats. As a freshman in 2019,she was named NFCA National Freshman of the Year.
