Nabalus altissimus (formerly Prenanthes altissima), commonly called the tall rattlesnakeroot or white lettuce, is a perennial wildflower and herb in the family Asteraceae native to the eastern United States. [1] In 2010 it was reclassified from the genus Prenanthes to Nabalus . [2]

Habitat

This perennial grows in mesic environments including riparian zones. It often grows in forests composed of Sugar Maple ( Acer saccharum ), American Basswood ( Tilia americana ), and American Beech ( Fagus grandifolia ). [1] . It blooms in late summer and autumn. [3] [4]

Range

This species occurs in the eastern United States west to Michigan, Missouri, and Texas as well as in Quebec, Canada but is unknown in Mississippi, and Florida. [3] [4] In Texas, it occurs in Jasper and Newton counties in the extreme southeastern part of the state. [4]
