The New Mill and Depot Building of the former Hawthorne Woolen Mill are located in Greenwich, Connecticut, United States. The two structures were built on an existing textile mill complex in the 1870s.
The mill and its depot, in the Gothic Revival and Queen Anne architectural styles respectively, were unusually decorative for functional buildings of that era. Today they are a commercial and retail complex for the Glenville neighborhood of Greenwich. In 1990 they were listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Thirteen years later, when the Glenville Historic District was listed on the Register in 2003, the buildings were a contributing property.
The two structures are located on a 0.8-acre (0.32 ha) lot between Pemberwick Road on the west and the Byram River on the east, where the 30-foot-high (9.1 m) dam that powered the mills is still present. To the north is the commercial center of Greenwich's Glenville neighborhood, with the large former Glenville School, now the Western Greenwich Civic Center, to the east, behind a housing development. On the west side of the street the land rises sharply through wooded bluffs to a residential neighborhood; another one is on the other side of the river, where the land rises more gently to the state line and Rye Brook, New York, a half-mile (1 km) away. To the south Pemberwick continues through woods along the Byram. [1]
The "new" mill building, the larger of the two, sits on the river. It is a three-story, 56-by-156-foot (17 by 48 m) brick building with a two-story 19-by-46-foot (5.8 by 14.0 m) northern wing. Because of a regrading it now appears to be two stories on the east. A central tower rises to a fourth story, its top 55 feet (17 m) above the ground. [1]
Intricate brickwork and decoration characterizes all the main block's facades. The round-arched windows on both floors have as their springlines belt courses made of three rows of brick laid as two rows of headers with black stretchers in between. This is complemented by a reverse in the arches themselves, where the black bricks are recessed. Pilasters rise between the windows, topped by squares of projecting brick. A dentilled cornice runs just below the roofline. [1]
The tower, and all but the east roofline, are crenelated at the top. Additionally machicolation supports the flared top of the tower. Diapered brick spells out "1881", the year of construction, in one of the entablatures. Smaller towers are located at the corners of the building. [1]
A pedestrian plaza separates the mill building from the 30-by-123-foot (9.1 by 37.5 m) depot to the east. It is a one-and-a-half-story structure of brick, in less decorative patterns. Its gabled roof has broad overhanging eaves pierced by gabled dormer windows on the west. Both the dormer gables and the braces at the main gable peaks are braced with wood in a lacy foliate pattern, more intricate at the gable peaks than the dormers. The latter have visible rafter ends. Glenville had grown up around a mill on the Byram since first being settled in the mid-18th century. By 1814 at the latest a textile mill, the Byram Manufacturing Company, had been established at the present site. It went through a variety of owners over the next several decades, none of them able to make it successful in the long term. [1]
After an 1874 foreclosure, William Tingue of Paterson, New Jersey, purchased the mill. He formed Tingue, Hous and Company, doing business as Hawthorne Woolen Mill. An insurance survey done in 1875 notes that the buildings were "substantial and in good repair"; it is not known then why he chose to demolish and replace them within a few years. [1]
The depot, probably the first of the two to be built, was to have been served by a railroad, shown as planned on 1867 maps, connecting Port Chester, New York, and Ridgefield, Connecticut. Those plans were eventually abandoned. The construction of the new mill, which replaced a building described by the 1875 insurance survey as similar in size, suggests that Tingue had been able to make the mill very profitable. [1]
His success may also have led him to choose such high-style designs for the buildings, to show the importance of the mills to the community and his commitment to them, as owners of such buildings at the time sometimes did. The intricate patterning on the mill facade suggests a great deal of thought went into the composition; the woodwork trim on the depot shows a Stick/Eastlake influence. [1]
In 1892 the company changed its name to the Hawthorne Mills Company. Five years later, in 1897, it was recorded as operating with 20 sets of cards and 70 broadlooms. The American Felt Company, a New Jersey–based concern that operated mills in four states, acquired Hawthorne in 1899. [1]
Its success continued, with first Irish and later Polish immigrants who lived nearby staffing the mills. In 1939 it had 24 card sets, five pickers and 200 employees total. After World War II it went into decline along with the New England textile industry as a whole. [1]
American Felt closed the mill in the 1970s. [3] It has since been converted into a residential and commercial complex. The interiors of the buildings were completely renovated and partitioned, but the exteriors remain relatively intact. [1]

The Russell Company Upper Mill is an historic structure in Middletown, Connecticut, at the junction of Russell Street and East Main Street in South Farms, at the end of East Main Street's commercial and industrial development areas. Built in 1836, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. There is a small pond to the south. Small businesses border the street to the north, followed by the buildings of Russell Manufacturing Company, the area's most dominant feature. Russell Street crosses Sumner Brook nearby and ascends to a large residential district to the west. The mill is currently a condo-apartment complex.
Glenville is a neighborhood and census-designated place in the town of Greenwich in Fairfield County, Connecticut, United States. As of the 2010 census, it had a population of 2,327. It is located in the western part of Greenwich at the falls of the Byram River, which provided waterpower when this was a mill village. The area is home to Glenville Elementary school, Western Civic Center and a volunteer fire station, the Glenville Fire Department.
The Barker Mill is an historic mill at 143 Mill Street in Auburn, Maine. Built in 1873, this five-story brick mill building is one a relatively few in the state that has a mansard roof, and has a higher degree of decorative styling than other period mill buildings. It was the first major mill on the Auburn side of the Androscoggin River. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979, and is now residential housing. It was built in the Second Empire architectural style.
The Farwell Mill is an historic former mill complex at 244 Lisbon Street in Lisbon, Maine. Built in 1872, it is a fine example of a cotton mill built at the height of the Industrial Revolution. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. It is now residential housing.
Glenville Historic District, also known as Sherwood's Bridge, is a 33.9 acres (13.7 ha) historic district in the Glenville neighborhood of the town of Greenwich, Connecticut. It is the "most comprehensive example of a New England mill village within the Town of Greenwich". It "is also historically significant as one of the town's major staging areas of immigrants, predominantly Irish in the 19th century and Polish in the 20th century" and remains "the primary settlement of Poles in the town". Further, "[t]he district is architecturally significant because it contains two elaborate examples of mill construction, designed in the Romanesque Revival and a transitional Stick-style/Queen Anne; an excellent example of a Georgian Revival school; and notable examples of domestic and commercial architecture, including a Queen Anne mansion and an Italianate store building."
The Italian Center is the name commonly used for a mid-19th-century house that is home to the organization of the same name on Mill Street in Poughkeepsie, New York, United States. It is a contributing property to the Mill Street-North Clover Street Historic District.
The Elisha Williams House is located on Aitken Avenue in the east corner of the city of Hudson, New York, United States. It is a brick Federal style building, different from other Hudson houses in that style, built around 1810. Some Victorian decorations were added later.
The William V. N. Barlow House is on South Clinton Street in Albion, New York, United States. It is a brick building erected in the 1870s in an eclectic mix of contemporary architectural styles, including Second Empire, Italianate, and Queen Anne. Its interior features highly intricate Eastlake style woodwork.
The Union Mill Complex,, is located at the junction of Milton Avenue and Prospect Street in Ballston Spa, New York, United States. It is a complex of three late 19th-century brick buildings on a 4-acre lot, and the ruins of a dam.
The Glenville School is a historic school building at 449 Pemberwick Road in the Glenville section of Greenwich, Connecticut, United States. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003. It was one of several schools built in the town in the 1920s, when it consolidated its former rural school districts into a modern school system, with modern buildings.
The Borough School, also known as Stonington High School from 1910 to 1939, is a condominium building at 25 Orchard Street in Stonington, Connecticut. It was built in 1888 and is a distinct and high quality local example of Second Empire architecture. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978 and was converted to residential use in 1981. This building is not to be confused with the town's modern high school, Stonington High School, in Pawcatuck.
The Warrenton Woolen Mill is a historic textile mill at 839 Main Street in Torrington, Connecticut. Founded in 1844, the mill was a major part of the local economy until its closure in 1984. Its surviving complex, dating to the early 20th century, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987. It has since been renovated into housing, as the Warrenton Mill Condominiums.
The Yantic Woolen Company Mill, also known as the Hale Company Mill, is a mill complex located at the junction of Chapel Hill and Yantic Roads in northwestern Norwich, Connecticut. Built in 1865, the stone mill is a well-preserved example of mid-19th century textile mill architecture, and was the major economic force in the village of Yantic, where it stands. The mill was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on July 25, 1996.
The Byram School is a historic former school building, located between Sherman Avenue and Western Junior Highway in Greenwich, Connecticut. Completed in 1926, it is a well-preserved example of institutional Colonial Revival architecture, enhanced by a parklike setting. It was used as a school until 1978, and was then converted to senior housing. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on August 2, 1990.
The William E. Ward House, known locally as Ward's Castle, is located on Magnolia Drive, on the state line between Rye Brook, New York and Greenwich, Connecticut, United States. It is a reinforced concrete structure built in the 1870s.
Ormsby-Laughlin Textile Companies Mill is a historic textile mill located at Waterford in Saratoga County, New York. It was built in 1894 and is a 4+1⁄2-story, Romanesque Revival style, brick industrial building with a gable roof. It features a 6+1⁄2-story tower at the center of the front facade. The rear elevation features a 5-story elevator tower and a 100-foot-square brick smokestack attached to a 1-story wing. It is the only surviving factory associated with the major industrial community known as Dial City.
The North Grove Street Historic District is located along the north end of that street in Tarrytown, New York, United States. It consists of five mid-19th century residences, on both sides of the street, and a carriage barn. In 1979 it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The William Park House is a historic house at 330 Main St. in Sprague, Connecticut. Built in 1913, it is a prominent local example of an American Foursquare house with Craftsman/Bungalow features. It was built for William Park, owner of the Angus Park Woolen Company, a major local employer. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007.
The Home Woolen Company is a historic textile mill complex on Main Street in Beacon Falls, Connecticut. Developed between 1853 and 1916, the complex housed major local employers, engaged first in the manufacture of woolens and rubber products. The complex has been converted to residential use. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.
Though American Felt closed in the late 1970s, some residents still think of Glenville's boundaries as the small area that surrounds the mill.
